The biggest dangers I ran into personally: 1) Idiot dive partners. One caught a sea snake by hand, then realized he could not just release it. Others were incompetent and forced me to risk decompression sickness to save them. 2) Infection from coral. I was doing a clean up and lost focus, ran my arm across coral. 3) Dive boat that drifted away and left me and my buddy behind.

Yes!! That's why it's so important to have those predive safety chats with your buddies. Unfortunately even good friends sometimes become idiots underwater. (I saw one pick up a cone shell!) With the dive boat drifting away, that is really scary. Did you have your SMB?
@tsbrownie Жыл бұрын
@OceanPancake That was before SMBs. The ironic part was my dive buddy was the tour guide! I also stopped telling tour/boat operators I was a Dive Master and only showed my Advanced card, otherwise they would use me as a free assistant and pair me with absolute beginners "to keep them safe."

Hello Katt. I did my OW Portion(PADI) on Aug 5 and 6 2023. It was a Lake with 2-3 Ft Visibility. In all my life I Never swam in a lake. Let alone in one. Admittedly I was a bit Apprehensive at first. But It wasn't a problem. on the third and final dive(Aug 5) we did a Decent without a line. I was the Last one to go down. Couldn't see where I was. Almost smacked into a rock. Thinking I overshot the 20 ft platform, I swam with the rocks to my left. Then wondered where I was?? Saw a platform in the distance. Went to it. Nobody was there. I'm on the Wrong platform at 30 Ft. Did an Unsupervised Ascent. About 15 Ft my(Personal) Dive computer went nuts. I'm coming up too fast(Not kicking, Holding the Purge Button open). First thought was Lung Over expansion. Then I did a Slow Exhale the rest of the way up. On the surface I found my bearings. I was on the Opposite side of the Training Area. Surface Swam to where I needed to be. Waited. Spoke to people on the Dock. Including another Diver who told me I did the right thing. Ended up meeting the Instructor on my way down. He had me do the CESA twice since I didn't make the "Ahh" sound. If I didn't tell him what happened to me, He wouldn't have known. Was I Scared? No. Panic? No. I Remembered my Pool Training in May 2023. Panic is the #1 Killer of Divers. Part of my problem was, I'm too Positive Buoyant. 7mm, 2 Piece wetsuit, 22 Pounds Lead. I couldn't descend feet first.Had to slow kick my way down. It took almost no air in the BC for me to float. I am 5' 4" and weight about 150 Pounds. 30" Waist.

Service intervals depend on the brand. Most of the quality brands are two years or every 100 dives whichever comes sooner.

A good instructor will lead you through your training at a pace you're comfortable with. And if you need to ask a question, do it! There are no silly questions in scuba. And the better you become as a diver the more you can enjoy it. I wish you well in your adventures!

Hydroids, like Fire Coral, are definitely something you want to avoid. I brushed up against some in Bali and had a very itchy rash for a couple weeks!

The banana superstition I’ve seen on fishing boats the most. I’ll still follow it on dive boats.

We had someone bring a banana recently, and they got injured when we got back to the boat ramp... so we don't mess with it

What things are you afraid of in the ocean? Let me know what Ive missed.
@leopoldbloom4835 Жыл бұрын
There's not a lot you can't handle, but there are quite a few things to have an eye on: panicking buddies, navigation when unguided, zero vis, overhead environments, rogue fishing lines... Still, in the end while diving your safety is pretty much more in your hand than while riding your bike in your home town during rush hour, when any fool can run you over.

For new people in scuba, the most important thing is a good instructor, that will keep you away from dangerous fish, dangerous corals, dangerous currents, bad equipment, basically everything you've mentioned. Noob scuba divers should not have to worry about all these things, a professional instructor should make their experience safe and fun. Hey I don't like adding comments like this, but you sound more like sharing you top 10 scary experiences rather than helping people with scuba. You are actually telling people that they SHOULD BE AFRAID of things and the refences to the 'unforgiving mistress', this will more likely discourage people from trying scuba. Your advice about 'quick pop ups' to see where the boat is, then dive again, sounds like a non-standard dive profile, that has requirements that you don't even mention, not sure this is good advise imho

Do you still have problem with dry hair after diving? Because there is a life hack to fix that if you're interested.

Whats the life hack? I actually switched to shampoo with a purpose and absoluteky love their bars.
@yakoshibanakushetka2924 Жыл бұрын
@@OceanPancake Well, it's simple, cheap and working. Apply coconut oil to your head and hair prior entering the water. You should put a rubber swimming cap though to keep everything in place. I'm doing it and I guarantee for the results. Would you try it?

When I did my deep dive certification in Spain, I told my divemaster, because I had more weight I would may descent faster then her, if so I would just wait at the anchor same if we would lost each other I would go back to the anchor and wait there for a while. To behonest I hate this one Minute rule. Don't understand me wrong it wouldn't help to search for hours if you lost each other. But I wish the rule would be like two minutes or so. 1 Minute search and an additional Minute at a meeting point. I know it's maybe not always possible, but I would love to change the rules this way. I guess 2 Minutes should be possible.
@OceanPancake Жыл бұрын
Even with a descent and having more weights it's important to try descend within arms reach of your dive buddy. You're still able to slow your descent. But it's good you acknowledged the situation and made a clear plan for separation. Did you find her at the bottom of the anchor?

It’s not a rule, it’s a common guide. You’re more than welcome to set a 2 minute with your dive partner when you plan the dive.

@@Friedolays could you elaborate further? I am going to do my OWD in Egypt and am curios how one would define a good or a bad instructor.
@Friedolays Жыл бұрын
@caraculo1077 Sure. So she speaks without knowing facts, giving loose information she is uncertain about, and in general, she doesn't have the right attitude or demeanor that displays confidence in any way. An instructor, at least a good one, has the demeanor of a leader. They are teaching you skills that you will be using to "not die" or become disabled.
