I agree 100% that this type of behavior absolutely must change as soon as possible however it will take participation from everyone involved, both men and women. You are absolutely correct in your statement that this type of interaction has become normalized. There are some complete pigs out there that we can call out all day and they will likely never change however I believe that there are also a lot of men that are acclimated to this current normalization of sexist behavior and if it were brought to their attention they would be mortified. The thing is, both men and women need to address this when it happens and not weeks later on a KZbin video without the participation of everyone involved. Maybe before you posted this it would have been a good idea to reach out to Woody and Gus? They very well might have surprised you with their reaction and response…. I’m also curious about this, was Sarah on board with calling out Gus and Woody like this? In summary I can say that I’m disappointed that you felt uncomfortable in retrospect but I’m also disappointed that you seem to have employed what can arguably be described as potentially canceling ambush tactics to bring up your feelings.

I just failed mine, mainly due to 2 failed CESAs. I think the instruct gave up and didn't complete the remaining tests she had allocated for the day. I asked to try on the next dive, so we did that. I succeeded from 4.5m, but she didn't want to retest me on it from 6m, effectively failing me from dive 3. She sufficiently gave up on dive 3 that we didn't even complete a 20 minute dive even though I had sufficient air left for the 2 minutes needed to make 20 minutes.

I recently found your channel and I appreciate your videos and bringing to light these issues and being open and honest about it. Things won't change unless it's talked about. @@OceanPancake it was great! I got to dive at a spring fed nature reserve, so it was perfect visibility, and the lake is home to several endemic and endangered species like the Texas blind salamander. The third and fourth dive was at a different lake and visibility was awful, but that made for some really good practice in less than ideal conditions 😊

Our social dive club has a rather big gender imbalance. Our whole committee team is men! Recently we've attracted some younger people, but we haven't been able to attract women to take leadership roles. I've only been part of the committee a few months, and so far I haven't seen any negative behaviours, but the committee is mostly much older guys, so it is very possible that at the very least we have an image issue. They are a bit "old school", so I do expect some resistance to any major changes, but Im happy to take the initiative to improve. The few experienced diver women in the club are too busy as instructors outside of the club, or with other projects. Any suggestions on where to start? I'd love to see our club evolve into a more progressive and welcoming place. We already are succeeding with attracting people from overseas, and even lgbt folks, but for some reason we are absolutely failing with attracting women! Great video!
@OceanPancake7 күн бұрын
That's great to hear! I think just continuing to be a safe and welcome space, and offering / suggesting to other women divers to join the committee eventually it will balance out. For many years I was the training officer at our university dive club, and I found it to be quite balanced. :) thank you so much for taking the time to watch this video :)

This isn't a dive industry issue; its bigger; its a society issue and it will take decades for that to change; but for the most part it is slowly changing. Unfortunately this is also coupled with the "look at me" and "look how dumb and inappropriate I can be" social media muppets who will do anything to get a laugh, a follow, a like, a subscribe to feeed their ego (and in some cases bank balance).

@vefrench8 күн бұрын
I agree that this is an important topic and won't tolerate disrespectful behavior toward anyone. However, after viewing the entire Divetalk video, it didn't appear that Woody intended to make you feel uncomfortable or was coming on to you in any way. If you were offended, you should have said so immediately. Was that really the best example available of male misogyny in diving? Calling Woody out publicly, after the fact, over his innocuous attempt at humor is disingenuous and counterproductive to your argument. 😢
@OceanPancake8 күн бұрын
It's just an example how normalised these types of comments are. As I explained in the video, I didn't think much of it at the time, but reading the comments I saw how many people and men were calling him out, Gus also called him out, just shows how used to I've gotten to these 'harmless' comments but without commenting on them, it creates a space that's not necessarily safe for other women :) thanks for taking the time to join the discussion. 🤿

I'm 67 male and dive ( but do not and will never instruct) and watch both your videos and Dive Talk, I think Woody is a gentleman and would be mortified if he thought that his comments were inappropriate. He was very complimentary in all respects. The comments are a different kettle of fish. Personally having had both male and female instructors, in general I would prefer a female instructor as they are less likely to want to exert their alpha male mentality. I have been lucky that some of the male instructors have been cool, laid back and exhibit no alpha male behaviour. I would love to dive with anyone male or female as long as they leave their ego and sexism at home !

Keep divin' ladies. Good part is, SCUBA is changing. Went on a trip last year. Female divemaster ; more women on our boat than men; and I hope that continues. There is no reason everyone shouldn't (or couldn't) enjoy the wonderful journeys under water. And if men were actually thinking about it, you'd think they would want more women in diving right??? But Sarah hit the nail on the head - people just need to be a little more cognizant about their own personal filter. And they should watch your video so that maybe one day they realize their "friendly" comments aren't so friendly to the one receiving the comment! Anyway, see ya'll on the next safety stop. Stay safe.

While I do believe Woody wasn't degrading you on purpose, I am a firm believer in the reality of others feelings. Their feelings are their reality. He did cross a line. At one time I worked for a company that distributed custom and high performance auto parts. There were two women in sales whose knowledge way over shadowed mine. Men customers would literally call and say, "Can I talk to one of the guys?" If they only knew!
@OceanPancake9 күн бұрын
Yes! That phone call comment would truly annoy me as it was almost daily!! I don't think Woody did anything malicious, but I think him and Gus kickstarted a conversation in the comments about off hand remarks and standing up for women, and calling men out. His reaction to my video in the end of the day is a tiny tiny fraction of my dive experience, but since we're on platforms, think it's useful to use these moments to open conservations

I've been diving for 10 + years and can confidently say I have never seen this on a dive boat. I have my own community of divers I tend to travel with so am sort of in a bubble to be fair. I have done many dives in Hawaii, Cozumel, Jamaica, and Seattle. Dive masters have been about a 50-50 split male to female for me, and the boat captains have always treated everyone the same. Also, in that @DIVETALK clip you showed right at the beginning, you failed to mention that Gus was calling Woody out constantly when his comments approached a line, and Woody was carefully clarifying his intended meaning the whole time. Harassment and discrimination are not ok anywhere. As far as my experience goes, I see it far far less in the dive community than I do in my every day life. I'm sorry your experiences have been so different.
@OceanPancake9 күн бұрын
That's amazing that you surround yourself with divers with the right attitude 😊🤿 As a diving instructor, I wasn't able to pick who I would dive with and unfortunately some people did say inappropriate things. I was 18-23 though and never really gave it a second thought. Even when I first reacted to dive talks video, I laughed at Woody's comments because I am so used to them. But when I read the comments and people were calling him out (Gus was also calling him out) it just made me take a pause and think this is a bigger issue I have also taken part in normalising. So just wanted to have the discussion, thrilled to hear that it does not happen everywhere 🌊🐟

Fully submerged touched on the toxicity and I agree. I'm a new diver obsessed with this newfound hobby, and I have been disappointed a lot by the people within it and the industry itself. Its very fragmented with people who are scratching it off their bucketlist and will never dive again and on the other end incredibly arrogant “elitist” type people who come off as condescending. I would like to see more in between. Also would like to add as a minority, I have received some stupid comments as well as there is not enough diversity. Above all I have enjoyed it enough that I want to keep diving and I hope more people get into the sport through channels like yours and others who share what we experience.
