What you should do if you see a coyote in your neighborhood

Are you seeing more urban coyotes in your neighborhood? You're not alone. Experts say it's typical to see more coyotes roaming in September and October because it's pupping season, and they're out looking for food.
"The coyote pups are typically born in April or May and this is the time of year when they're starting to disperse and go out on their own so you're seeing a lot of younger coyotes that are just kinda wandering around," said Dr. Jon Enyart with Project Wildlife.

You guys are out of kilter. Those coyotes come for easy prey and food. They will take your small dogs and cats and attack children which has been documented.not on my watch.

@@roytallericoGunner This is one of many reasons why small dogs and cats need to be indoors when not directly supervised. People letting cats roam unsupervised is one of the things causing these problems, as mentioned. People are providing easy and abundant prey for them. Keeping pets indoors and keeping trash closed up and unavailable is important or the problem will get worse. Coyotes have definitely attacked toddlers, and rabid coyotes have attacked older children and adults. It is more common now, because of encroachment and the food they get encouraging them into human areas, and then getting them used to humans and losing their fear. However, they are far less dangerous to children than dogs are. There have been two recorded deaths by coyotes (one toddler, one adult) in all of recorded history, but dogs kill 30-50 people per year in the United States alone. I can't imagine how horrific that must have been for the parents to lose their child to a coyote attack, but it's important to realize how rare that is. It is the only known fatal coyote attack on a child period, and the only fatal coyote attack in the United States. In that case the parents were not outside with the toddler; she had wandered out of the house alone and was unsupervised. The government instituted a coyote culling program after this happened. Coyotes are small animals, they're about the same size as a whippet. (On the other hand, eastern coyotes, which are not found in San Diego, are a hybrid between coyotes and wolves, and are larger. However, statistically they don't seem dangerous to humans either, as no eastern coyote has ever killed a human.) I believe another reason people are seeing more coyotes are that coyotes are recorded more, since everyone has cameras everywhere all the time. Coyotes are primarily nocturnal, so I have always seen them at night (since I have always kept weird sleep schedules). Most people wouldn't even realize they were around and have always been around. Now that there are security cams, doorbell cams, and hunting cams people are seeing these normally shy animals more often. Some of the footage in this news clip comes from stationary cameras. All the other footage is from a distance. Young coyotes are not worldly wise -- they haven't learned to be afraid of people yet, or come out only at night. Many of them will not survive, because animals that don't learn those lessons early don't survive in the wild. Their lack of survival skills are why they are seen more during this reckless teenage stage, at this time of year. But even so, the vast majority of these teen coyotes are shy and afraid of humans and do not come close to them.

Yes it's true the food left out attracts them as it does bears in some cities. Cats and dogs are a good supply of food for them also. The climate change brings in more coyotes all the time as the food supply such as rabbits and such have diminished. The deer herds here have taken a brutal beating by coyotes so it's not just in town. The fact is when their normal food supply runs out they adapt and will start taking people. As far as your list of only a few humans being attacked...I think you better look again at totals. I won't give up my space and hide my pets because they are in the area. I will terminate be the problem. Thes toothy devils are worse than Hamus and I have seen it all.
@Tser
@Tser 9 ай бұрын
@@roytallericoGunner The totals are correct. There have been only two fatalities ever. There's a difference between attacks and fatalities. The only fatality in the United States happened in 1981. Unfortunately the reality is coyotes are here and have always been here. It's not like they only just started attacking pets and getting into trash. We have to deal with things how they are and not how we wish them to be. Killing them does not protect people's pets or kids -- as mentioned, that fatality was in 1981 and we've had culling programs in California since -- so the only way to keep our pets safe is to keep them indoors. And not just from coyotes, obviously -- other people, cars, big dogs, rodent poison, etc. are more prolific killers of pets like cats and small dogs. And there are environmental reasons to keeping cats indoors, for example, as well as good neighborly reasons (I do not appreciate people's cats pooping in my yard, ugh). So even if people don't want to bother protecting their pet cats and small dogs from coyotes, I do hope they're keeping them contained for other reasons. I work with wildlife professionally. I have worked directly with coyotes, up close and personal. Coyotes in Southern California literally weigh between 18-25 pounds. They're so small and shy-natured that I am baffled and a bit amused by news reports like this, fear responses or treat them like an apex predator. Yes, they must be treated with respect, but so should all wild animals, including foxes and raccoons and martens and all the other creatures we have here. (And boar raccoons are far less likely to back down or run away when confronted by a human, and honestly far more intimidating to deal with. And raccoons in some areas are literally bigger than coyotes. Certainly fiercer, haha.

A coyote in Glendale killed a 5-year-old girl. Neighbors carry big sticks because the coyote packs became aggressive there. In Huntington Beach, 2 coyotes were stalking & attacking toddlers. In Woodland Hills, a coyote was dragging a toddler. Never underestimate them. One coyote was in a garage, aggressively hunting a cat.

We live near SE San Diego, and have a coyote that comes by our backyard almost every day. There is also a pair of coyotes that travel together...we see them every once in a while. Coyotes can jump a fairly tall fence (our backyard fence is 6' tall, but angles down a slope--even a feral cat can jump the fence if jumping from upslope to downslope). The coyotes in our area are skittish, and will run away if you shout at them. If you don't "haze" them, these coyotes will just wander around, probably looking for leftover pet food, or water.

I would suggest coyotes hunts with strict limits to pay for stations and coyotes counts to help protect the population! Or go fundme! Most won't bother you at all. Don't be a parent who doesn't know how to keep an eye on your kids and/or pets. If they do attack, remember this: The average coyote weighs 30 pounds and you weigh at least 120 to 200 lbs. Make an example out of 1 or 2 and the rest will back off.

Don’t forget… don’t run! Many people don’t think about what running means to a coyote, or even pet dogs. Prey runs. Running away is prey behavior. We love our coyotes, and we now have more because their home was in a large pecan grove about a mile away from us, and that grove was destroyed and turned into farmland. The coyotes had nowhere to go. It’s heartbreaking.
