I find there are two kinds of astrophysics books: short ones made for general audience written by scientists with a popular media reputation (Stephen Hawking, Neil deGrasse Tyson, etc.) and longer ones that go more in depth on specific information. For the former category, "Astrophysics for People in a Hurry" by Neil deGrasse Tyson or "A Brief History of Time" by Stephen Hawking are very popular. For the latter category, some of my favorite reads were "The Day we Found the Universe" by Marcia Bartusiak and "The Glass Universe" by Dava Sobel.

Thanks for the insight. I've derailed myself from finding purpose in life for over 10 years. This was a huge memory jog of what it means to have a purpose you want to die for. Astrophysics is not just to satisfy curiosity. Many projects involve a tremendous technological advance. We have the first image of a black hole, the detection of gravitational waves or the James Webb telescope. All these projects involve a collaboration of many scientific areas and a large investment. But every technological development has an application for which it is worth investing. Don't get frustrated by it, practically all science in all countries is like this. It does not only happen in astrophysics, it happens even in lines of research with the greatest immediate technological application.

One way, is to get a physics degree, take some astrophysics courses while you're there, and then continue for a PhD in astrophysics. In India, you should check out the undergraduate programs at IISc or one of the IISERs. IIST also has an undergraduate program, but I think there's some condition that you have to work for them for a few years afterwards, though your degree will be free

I'm 15 now but I've also been dreaming of getting into the Ivy Leagues since I was 12. I always expanded my knowledge by having fun like watching educational vids on yt for the sake of entertainment and sometimes memes. Reading a few books also help but don't make it seem like you're forcing yourself to study for an upcoming test since it may give you a burnout by the time you're older. Basically, just consume informative media about the subject while genuinely entertaining yourself. You got this bro, good luck!

There is no need to go to outer space for such experience. Lock yourself in an elevator and then let the elevator fall (cut its cable) 😂😂. According to Einstein equivalence principle, your experience would be exactly the same as if you are floating in empty space. You will be weightless.

@@okgalia6467 Some author recommendations: Neil Tyson has several books if you haven’t read them already, such as “astrophysics for people in a hurry” and “origins.” Also, I recently read “seven brief lessons on physics” by Carlo Rovelli, which was incredible. And, I have a book by Brian Greene that I haven’t read but I’m sure is great too. One thing that I’ve noticed about these introductory books is that they often cover relatively the same content. However, that is how I am able to ground the information I read, especially if it is repeated through different/interesting perspectives.

Hi, it will be tough for you to qualify for jee since it requires high level of math. I recommend that you give kvpy if you are in class 12, for which you can apply only for PCB. If your concepts are strong, you can enter IISc Bangalore. Even if you fail kvpy ( like I did) you can give IAT ( IISER aptitude test ) after 12th for admissions to IISER ( Indian Institute of Science education and Research) in which PCMB is tested ( No need to worry, you just need basics to clear the maths part for which you can refer NCERT. Also, build up your concepts in PCB so you can score well there) I myself am from PCB and qualified IAT 2020, will be shortly joining IISER Pune. After completing a BS MS course from IISER you can apply for physics PhD abroad in universities like Harvard, MIT, UCLA etc. and can become either a professor of astrophysics or an industrial researcher in reputed colleges and companies. All the best.

@@phoenixcreed1112 Well as a 16yrs old senior in high school I might not be much knowlegable about it but I will give you what I researched: Some astrophysicist work as professors in universities and get paid (cause they try teaches) but they also do research While others do research full time and get paid for it Here's a part of an article I read: *"Astrophysicists* and astronomers earned a *median salary of $114,870* in May 2016, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. *(Those are like the 80% get around that much salary)* A median salary is a midpoint in a list of salaries for that occupation, where half earned more and half earned less. *The lowest* 10 percent *earned $54,960 or less,* while *the highest 10 percent earned over $165,140.* The *median salary for teachers* at post-secondary schools, including colleges, universities and community colleges, was *$75,430* in May 2016. *NOTE:* The teacher also do research so an astrophysicist who teavh and do research together will get a medium salary of a 190,300(114,870 + 75,430) *Salaries also grow with experience,* regardless of whether you work in business, research or academia. *Example:* *Post-doctoral appointment:* $35,000-$45,000 *Assistant professor:* $50,000 for 9-10 months *University professor:* $80,000-$100,000 for 9-10 months Astrophysicists/astronomers in federal government: $145,780 The first three salary examples are from the American Astronomical Society. ​​@@A_n_a_t_tget a Physics degree first. In BSc Physics course keep Astrophysics as your DSE paper and then get enrolled in a good University/Institute for MSc Physics and do Research Project in Astrophysics in your last semester of MSc. Then, you can get into PhD for Astrophysics
