In this video, What you should know before becoming an Attending Physician, I go through 5 things that you I wish I had known before finishing residency, this will review finishing residency and what come next, for an anesthesiologist.
My name is Dr. Karen Francois and I am a 5th year Attending physician based out of NY. These stories will chronicle my life with Anesthesia, as an Anesthesiologist and home life with my husband and 3 children. Through these glimpses into my life I hope to inspire and motivate young women or men into seriously considering Anesthesia as a career choice.
I am a Doctor and I as born and raised in the projects of the Bronx NY and I made it to become of highly respected physician , if I can do it then any one else in my situation can do the same.

@@taiwoshogbanmu9747 nah Julia is correct on her thinking. If you want to be a doctor, unfortunately, admissions committees don't believe your story if you go to nursing school first. They will grill you on why you thought that was a good idea. But hey, like you said, nursing ain't a bad career. You help people and you get paid well. It's very respectable and you can do anesthesia and see patients independently as a nurse (with a little extra schooling). But seriously, if you want to be a doctor it's more time and cost effective *not* to go to nursing school.

It would be nice to get actual numbers of a resident paycheck and an attending paycheck taking into consideration of loans, malpractice, taxes etc. it doesn’t have to be your numbers specifically but kind of like made up numbers. I’ve came across plenty of videos about how much a doctor makes but no one really says much. It’s understandable because money is such a taboo topic.. but it will still be nice to hear actual numbers of what a resident or attending take home paycheck will be taking into consideration of all the loans etc. I’m curious because I’ll be starting medical school a bit late and possibly want an idea of budgeting for future family planning while in residency. Thank you so much for the video!

Hard to give specifics since it varies greatly depending on where you live, but the average annual salary for a PGY1 (1st yr resident or intern) in NYC was $75K in 2019-2020. That is a relative number..factoring in cost of NYC living, it’s not much at all.

@3anesthesiame40
@3anesthesiame40 3 жыл бұрын
Job security in medicine in general is strong. Once you’re at the point of choosing your specialty, consider where you might want to live and work and look into the number of/ available opportunities/demand for that type of physician to help guide your choice. Anesthesiologists remain in high demand in NY..where you work is a factor in that.

@@3anesthesiame40 thank you for your answer! I guess what I'm really getting at is, how often are Anesthesiologists turning over? Do they often seek to change employers for better compensation or different corporate culture? I understand residency or fellowship may be at a different location than wherever I end up as an attending, but I guess my question is, how long is job duration most often before seeking another employment opportunity?

@@MegaPoliyo in the US, you may end up doing 7 years of residency and fellowship depending on specialty. For instance 3 years of internal medicine plus 3 to 4 years of cardiology, and maybe an additional year for a cardiology specialty. Or you may do a 5 year general surgery residency plus a 2 year fellowship in cardio, plastics, or colo-rectal. This is all in addition to 4 years of med school, and 4-5 years of undergrad. So yes it generally does balance out
