To be hip is to be up to date and relevant. It's a form of intelligence. Hop is the movement. So Hip Hop = Intelligent Movement. In my personal opinion, this defines the culture of Hip Hop and it shouldn't be subjective. We should respect the foundation and preserve the true essence. Now the Rap genre, that's 100% subjective and anyone should be able to express themselves however they feel like. Nah. Respectfully Hip Hop is an art form and all art is capable of evolving. In KRS-One's definition of Hip Hop it may very well be Intelligent Movement. But that don't have to be any other artist's definition. Salute to KRS-One. But Salute to Drake and Mos Def both rap legends at this point.

Everyone is entitled to their interpretation of what Hip Hop means to them. One opinion can't necessarily trump another. And in no means am I trying to put a flag down and claim to have the true definition of this art form that some may refer to as our culture. My only hope is that we don't stray too much from its true essence and we allow it to be taken from us, like other art forms in the past. Also, I hope this ain't come off as a Mos Def > Drake "rant". Multiple large businesses, an international Airport, restaurants, a sports arena, etc. The mayor and many ppl in the community are doing great work in Newark. Every major city has its rougher areas but Newark is and should be a destination worth moving to and building up.
