My rooster's comb was becoming discolored from this artic weather we are having, too. I picked him up, held his comb to my warm cheek and felt him relax in my arms. I know he was saying, "thank you!". After I warmed it up, I applied Vaseline to his comb. ❤🐓❤ All my girls were looking good because they have small combs.

Thank you, this was so informative! This last summer, all my girls got fowlpox. I was very concerned about them and did some research and figured out it was fowlpox and that they should be fine but it had to run its course and it did, they are all recovered. None of them acted differently while they had it so that made me feel better 😅 one of my girls got an injury on her eye, it was pretty swelled up and neosporin didn't work nor did just using colloidal silver. I don't think we have chicken vets out where I live and my husband was not going to spend hundreds of dollars on a chicken but I didn't give up, I went to Tractor Supply and asked if they had anyone that knew a lot about chickens. Surprisingly they had a young man that was very knowledgeable who recommended this spray for chicken injuries and safe for the eyes. It worked!!! That and the colloidal silver gel together! I was so happy when her eye healed completely ❤

Just ordered and received your book! Can’t wait to read it. Love your channel. We have been dealing with very low to negative temps this week. It’s been hard on our animals and us. I have been worried sick over my chickens. This is my first winter with chickens. Yes I’m new to being a chicken owner and so far I love it other than the stress of my babies being cold. I’m learning so much from your channel. ❤

If chickens are dry, and protected from wind they can tolerate quite a bit of cold. If it is under 25, or they go to bed wet I turn on the heat lamp. It is permanently affixed into a sturdy socket and cannot touch any bedding or walls. This past week has been crappy weather throughout much of the country, and getting everything clean and dry can be really difficult. I personally am sick and don’t think being out in the cold is going to help me, but in a couple of days I need to clean and add new shavings. In a sense of predators I normally don’t know why a chicken died. They look fine at bedtime, are dead the next morning. Right now I do have one hen, about age five, who does not look very good. I am going to give her some scrambled eggs tomorrow, and make sure all their water containers have the probiotic and nutritional supplement.

I love your messages of reassurance to first-time chickenkeepers. It's so easy to blame ourselves, but you do good by trying to help them, and that's more than most people would bother with. I stay comb-aware with my birds and my neighbor's neglected flock. When it's supercold, I apply a precautionary layer of Bag Balm on their combs. My big Buff Orp Goldie has a resplendent comb, high and rooster-y and bright coral red. But when she's down, her comb turns pale and can shrivel to nothing! If it's windburned and ashy, I Balm her comb and wattles. Bag Balm Original Formula is a blessing to Bird, and to the Apes who care for them. I use it on me, too--that stuff is the absolute tits!

Watching mine closely for frostbite right now. Here in Texas, we are experiencing a harsher-than-usual arctic blast. Protected them from drafts and applied vaseline at the onset of the frigid weather. I actually selected very large-combed breeds because they handle Texas heat better. LOL I had a passing whim of crocheting little bonnets for my girls, but I KNOW they'd try to eat them and we would have definitely have complications then. Dry fowl pox is another hazard in hot, humid Texas summer (spread by mosquito etc bites). That one I've been able to manage treatment easily (I use Vetricyn spray on the lesions).

From a fellow Texan, I hope your flock made it through the extreme weather unscathed. This is my first winter with chickens and I was going to put Vaseline on their combs also, but got scared when someone told me that if it got cold enough the Vaseline could freeze and that would guarantee frostbite. There so much conflicting information out there.....

Thank you so much for this! This is my first winter with chickens and I have been concerned about them. I live in South Carolina but our temperatures have really dipped a lot lately and we have been in the 20s and getting into the teens this weekend which is not normal for us. I have two leghorns, two isa browns and two golden comets. I've noticed on the leghorns that where their comb flaps over it is pale looking. I have been using Hen Healer on the chickens some nights but I noticed this morning that I'm seeing some black dots and some white (almost looks kinda like dry skin) on some of my chickens. I'm going to get the A&D and try it on them. I have been too afraid to use heat so we have added extra straw in the coop and covered the coop with a plastic tarp and then we added two canvas tarps on top of that to keep knock some of the cold and wind down from the coop.

Love your videos so thankyou for all the amazing information you share. We live in Australia so cold is not an issue but heat is. Summer is a challenge for them but we have our chickens in a pen that is shaded by large trees. When it gets super hot I spray the trees with the hose water and it brings the temperature down by 10 degrees. They seem to get health issues in summer too probably because they are battling the heat. Anyway thankyou again for all the wonderful information. Love from Australia

I’m a little concerned because my chickens combs by the way they’re more of an indoor chicken they live in my garage and come inside to sleep with me they are very sweet and tame. They’re Indonesian chickens, but I am a little worried because recently, and I only have two chickens. By the way one of my chickens has been pecking at the other one and pulling out a little bit of their head feathers just a little bit at the time, but has to do it more and more to the point where they are now I’ve tried to get involved in separate them, but I’m not sure what’s going on.
