I'm a zoomer and still enjoyed playing Warcraft 2 (bcs I always thought what was the story of first games were). I'm interested in it, how the setting back then was more serious (compared to WoW). And the plot was more like an actual war and not like some epic "saving the world" trope ad nauseam.

I wonder if the modern WoW section is accurate. Because I remember when I played during Shadowlands people were so sweaty that to do anything you had to literally grind this game like it's your job. And you should research and get good at your class. It was way harder than Classic but also way less fun imo. I don't know if WoW is different now though. And there probably are a lot of more casual players. I just remember back then that it was rare for me to find a chill player who just wanted to relax.

I think it's important to make a difference between "put reasonable effort into the game" vs "we expect everything to go as smooth and fast as possible" This is to counter the "chill dude, this is just a game" argument as well, but when you play multiplayer, it's not dissimilar from sitting at a table with others. One should respect their companion's time and effort as well. But the game was fun like that. You went into a dungeon with a bunch of guys, you fought monsters, sometimes you won sometimes you lose, you come back try again. Fun times. But, and what you described was a large portion of why I quit wow, by the time of Shadowlands (and BFA or even sooner) the game became a grindfest in a sense where one had a very long list of jobesque objectives every day and every week. This made the tryhard playstyle prevalent, because I think the objective shifted from "let's have fun in beating the dungeon" to "we have to complete this ASAP because we have to do this 80 more times" But true enough this was around even in WotLK with gearscore. But wasn't nearly as prevalent.

@@Limrasson I wanted to paly ret Paladin when it wasn't even that good but I wanted to make it work. It took me months to reach even kind of close to my friends item level and it's not even like I was playing casually. It's insane how much time I spent daily and still I was so far. I min maxed my combos and yet my damage was average which was not enough to play high mythic plus with them. I still needed more ilvl just to play with them. In my opinion a month especially with the amount of time I played back then should be enough to reach basically their ilvl. Because no way am not going to burn out. I am not that old of a player. I played cata private servers for fun and I played a bit of official on Legion and BFA. But on Shadowlands I did the mistake to try and play less casually.

Honestly, I started the game on private servers back in 2007-08, because back then I got the game as a gift and both me and the one who gifted it didn't know there was a 15$ sub, and there was no way in the world my parents would agree to pay that monthly sub for me, so I stumbled on the "free version" of the game, and kept getting my progress deleting due to servers shutting down constantly and having to move to another

Started with WC2 and when Wow came out it was fun but challenging. I think the appeal with vanilla is that it was just so open ended. No bombardment of screens you have to click through telling you to go here to get the latest content that plagues retail to this day if you stop for any amount of time. Just you, your character and an unexplored world ahead of you. In vanilla everything is a bare knuckle fist fight if you are doing something. The game doesn't sugar coat anything for you and is actively working against you at all times. Vanilla wants you to fail and doesn't hold your hand through anything. Everything is grindy and tedious and sometimes makes you want to pull your hair out. But in the end when you accomplish whatever task that is it feels soo good and liberating to have done it. A lot of that feeling just doesn't exist in retail IMO

Well, I´m honest. I make my way on a privat server of wow, because of health reasons. I play 1 or maybe 2 times in a week for maybe an hour. On top of that, I don't have so much money. So Blizzard WoW is not for me. So yeah, it's good to have a way to play a little WoW, without need to pay for the game, that I already paid for. What is, in my eyes, one of the biggest critic points I have, if it comes to WoW. I buy the newest expansion, and then I need to pay again, so I can play it. Except, I pay 90 Euro for the expansion. Then I get 30 days playtime. Nice and after the 30 days, I need to buy playtime or make abo, so I can play the game, I already paid for. Some people say, that his how things work nowadays. In my eyes, it's stupid. But yeah, that's just my point of view. So like I write, because I don't have the money anymore and not that good health, I find my way to a private server, where I can play BfA again.

Modern wow def my favorite. Been here since BC, I have every book on my bookshelf and I love roleplay. I think that's a drive for many roleplayers is that we don't want to have to create our own content for year long gaps (like we used to). We want the next big thing to happen, we want it to change the world, give us new zones or reshape old ones. I run M+ and Heroic raid, I make alts. Favorite doesn't mean only, of course. I dabble in all of the game modes. Season of Discovery has been great! I'm even plunderstorming. I just really like the modern wow better than anything else I've done. The Classic zones, I just level up to cap and that's about it. I've already done them. I want the new stuff. @-@

I'll admit as a ttrpg roleplayer, I enjoy a loose framework more than anyone making the content for me. My most fave settings are those I've made from scratch. WC itself had so much rich framework and that's why I enjoyed the first 2 expansions. But the further away it went, the less I enjoyed it. It's a big part why don't like Cata and quit within a couple months back then. I'm a very big proponent of 'the theatre of the mind' and just homebrew things that are completely silly about canon settings if needed. But when I hit Cata, I just hated the new lore so much I didn't even bother playing or rping anything past Wrath. Even some Wrath stuff is silly to me, but I was still able to enjoy rp enough. Cata and beyond just retcons too much of the lore for me and dumbs down/botches character arcs too much for my comfort.

Let's goooo! I'm not hard as nails on Blizz the way I was before, partly cuz people finally get how terrible things became. Quit during Cata OG. I knew Blizzard employees, their kids and lived nearby the hq. They went to the same movie theater we did and we'd see them catching lunch and chatting. Watching them become miserable as things got so much more corporate broke my heart. I see cash grabs from private servers but at least some of them try different things and listen occasionally. Ascension is my base server and I wander occasionally to seasonal servers.

Season of Discovery You count yourself among the Vanilla lovers, you couldn't wait for Classic to come out and finally give you a legitimate place to play your favorite version, you may even have been part of the #nochanges crew... But then you played Classic and the rose tinted goggles fell to the wayside, no amount of cope could hide the fact that in Vanilla there were just too many classes or spec's that were completely unviable, and the gear itemization just made no sense, you desperately wanted to play a feral Druid without farming crowd pummelers, you wanted to live out your fantasy of being a Holy warrior Retribution Paladin, but got stuck in a blue dress casting that one heal over and over... Then Blizzard announced Season of Discovery, and along with it the chance through Runes to finally play those classes and specs, run raids never before seen in WoW, experience new PVP content in the open world, #nochanges now making way for a Classic+ mindset. You know it's likely not to last as Season is in the title, but secretly you hope that Blizz will allow us to keep the characters once all the phases have run their course and you pray behind closed doors that maybe, just maybe we'll get new raids beyond Naxx and even a new zone.

I love classic. I sadly didn't play Vanilla WoW. I didn't start playing till right before Wotlk came out way back in 2008. Even though I play and appreciate retail WoW - I find myself doing older quests, getting older achievements, etc... more than playing the current content. Except I just got old Scholomance unlocked and I'm getting ready to unlock Old Naxx, lol. But I've always been a nostalgia freak about almost everything else in my life too.

Even the Trading Post in WoW is the similar way. - Yeah it isn't perfect. I dislike that with the Gold and DIamond Cards but it is still a veryy fun game and you can even win with the standard Cards. - Oh you haven't looked in Hearthstone for a long time. The single Player adventures arem ostly gone now. You can still play them but they haven't released any new ones. - I got Warcraft 1 and 2 From GoG.com. You should get them there, too. They are DRM Free so no change if Blizzard wants to "reforge" them... - I played Warcraft 1... this game is nearly impossible to win! D: Warcraft 2 is much better than this. 12:53 OMG! I mainly stick to Ascension WoW (private server) because my ADHD gets bored with one class or being restricted by playstyle (unless I'm hunter for collecting pets) on retail. I've always loved WoW though, both Blizzard's version and the many iterations fans make on private servers. Vanilla will always be my favourite, I've played more vanilla than any other version of the game, only TBC came close
