SuperButterBuns From After ten, main character designs weren't rugged or human enough for me. I like the NPCs more then most playable characters. My only problem with 10 was the horrible romance and ghost boy in general. I started with ten and couldn't bring myself to finish it, but I stumbled on a game call Legend of Dragoon and loved it so much I started seeking games like it and found myself playing tactics and 7. After beating 7 I tried 10 again with a different attitude. Ultimately, I appreciated ten more as gained experience with RPGs and found that the more otaku a game was the less I liked it.

Ironically, it was Kingdom Hearts that finally made me play the Final Fantasy games. I'd seen the characters, especially Cloud, Sephiroth, Tifa and Squall (screw that, Leon sounds a thousand times better. Squall sounds too close to squeal or sqwak) growing up. I remember vaguely seeing FF7 on the original PlayStation and so I started with that one. Then I played Crisis Core and fell in love with Zack, Angeal, and Sephiroth. And, fine, Gackt, I mean Genesis (I actually did become obsessed with Gackt though. Whoa boy, did I become obsessed). Then I played 13 and yes, loved it! And now I've played 15 and indeed, I love that one too. And it's all thanks to diet Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts.

5 is a lot like Bravely Default in that it's all about mixing and matching classes--it's definitely punishing because of this, simply by offering you the freedom to not have an at-all-balanced party composition, and pitting you against a lot of dead-ends where you end up underleveled for the area of the story you're in at the time. There are also a lot of optional boss-in-mook's clothing random enemy encounters like the skull eater, that really want to kill you.

"There's really no way to mess up the sphere grid." .... Actually, there is. And it was me. I borrowed the game from a friend back in high school for the PS2, and got stuck on the Seymour fight where you first encounter his summon, Anima. Couldn't get past it at all, so I brought the game and save card to my friend's house for help. The first thing she did was pop open my sphere grid..... to see that I had not touched it AT ALL. She went dead silent and slowly turned to look at me in disappointment as I stammered on about how I just didn't get it so I had ignored it and then forgotten about it. (Also it was my first Final Fantasy game, and I think it's a great gateway into the games, though probably not the best game of them all)

I reached the machina fight in Macalania before reaching Seymour and couldn't beat it, so my cousin came to help and was in absolute disbelief that I had gotten so far without upgrading a single character. When I did and finally progressed the plot (I hadn't really upgraded my character overall _THAT_ much) and when I saw Lulu cast "Thundara" on the Zu bird in Bikanel, I was like "holy shit, I unlocked a new spell?!" only to realize later that I was still like 20 grids away and that it was scripted. @Aaron Brewer Actually fuck yourself. That aside, and more of a personal opinion but if i felt the gameplay/combat were truly worth the experience like FF7 then I could see myself advocating playing it but the cutscenes and text dialogue were what really mattered to take away from Crisis Core.

I'd recommend playing the original final fantasy 7 as well. I know it looks a bit weird with all those polygons for the character models, but the best way to play it is to not look so much at the characters but rather at the prerendered backgrounds that are really a sight to behold. Having played the remake, i can understand a lot more about the story, the characters and the universe that the original offers and i really fell in love with it ever since.

It was the first and only console I've ever owned at the time of its release just so I could play FFX. everything else I usually wait for it to start going at discount or at a refurbish store like Game Xchange. It still is one of my favorite games. Or people who think "it's fine, but when people seem to be rating it 12 out of 10...yeah, it's overrated..."
@hellfrozenphoenix136 жыл бұрын
As someone who played FF7 as both my first FF and when it was first coming out, I think it's overrated in how it's always called the best of the Final Fantasy games, despite not being so in my eyes. It's a great game, with wonderful mechanics and was a bit of a break through for the time (holy in combat character models!) but I still think 9 did a better job character wise while 8 had much better themes to it's story overall. Now, that doesn't mean i think FF7 is bad, but too many expect final fantasy to be simply the standard for all FF games and it had various issues I dislike. The grinding to level up materia, how broken you can make your builds, the focus on a lot of grinding, etc. ALthough im an odd one, as Final Fantasy 9 is my overall favorite despite it's flaws, im merely giving my view as someone who has the "ff7 is overrated' view and the reason behind it.

FFX was my first and favourite FF game, I'd agree it's the best place to start for people looking for a turn based experience. The graphics were really good for its time, finding where you need to go is easy, there aren't a lot of missables and the main story bosses aren't too difficult even with minimal grinding. The newer ones are closer to your standard american RPG's (FFXV) and the older ones don't have the best graphics to the point where it's really hard to tell what the characters are supposed to look like or even where doors/exits are (FFVII).

Well, happy you enjoy it. To me, the main draw is the characters, and hoo-boy it's not a good place when I want half of the main cast to _go die in a hot blazing fire._ Seriously, when your design for the main character is "Take the Flanderization of one of the series' most popular characters that left him as a husk of his original design and ADD BOOBS TO IT"... well, you can only go downhill.

@@Ritokure I'm sorry but I get kind of annoyed at the "Lightning is just female Cloud" bullshit. She just isn't. She's an ex-military badass who's very blunt, sure, and they've both got the spiky hair, but unlike Cloud she actually kind of seems to have her shit together. Somewhat. And her interactions with the other characters (Snow and Hope in particular) are so good. The newer versions of Cloud are low-key autism coded, and it's very clear he struggles with social interactions. He's a traumatized dork that doesn't know what to do with himself. I like that version of him. But Lighting, in comparison, is a very different beast with very different motivations. Edit: Just realize I'm writing this 7 years in the future and my perspective thus likely is very different lol.

@westsideisdabest78256 жыл бұрын

@Wei_Radula_Regiment6 жыл бұрын
If you want decent Junctions early, Refining Abilities is the fastest way. Right at the beginning of the game, equip your GFs, set Quetzalcoatl's Ability learning to Card and Shiva's to Ice & Water Magic Refine as the first Abilities they learn, go win two battles on the beach (Balamb's beach always has two of those fish per battle) and you'll be able to refine Fish Fins. From the two battles, you'll be able to Refine 80 Water Para Magics. In FFVIII, Water is slightly stronger for Junction'ing than the "ra"/ intermediate Para Magics (Fira, Blizzara & Thundara). In probably the amount of time it'd take you to draw 40 Fire Para Magics, you could be more than four times as powerful with the above tactic. It doesn't take much more time, or effort to get an endgame caliber Para Magic _before_ you become a SeeD. With the Card Ability learned, you can Card enemies to make Cards and start learning the Card Mod Ability which lets you Refining Cards into Items that can yield a lot of Para Magic at once. With the Card Mod Ability and Quetzalcoatl's Thunder & Wind Magic Refine Ability, you can change the easily obtained Abyss Worm Cards (plenty of Triple Triad playing NPCs in Balamb use them and are easy to beat) into Windmills, which turn into plenty of Tornado Para Magics (Tornado is actually better for Junction'ing than the famously good for Junction'ing Quake Para Magic and you can get Tornado earlier than Quake). By the way, I also started with FFVIII and love it, as well.

Compare to literally any other Final Fantasy - the others all have memorable enough music that I can literally hum the entire soundtrack from memory. Same here. Sad, FFII is one of the best in the series and is my personal favorite in the main games, but so rare to find many fans of it. I think it just gets too over shadowed by FFIV and the other more classic games. Its a shame too, because its really the first one to have the characters you played as that you actually cared for, since FFI didn't give the protagonists personalities or dialog. I'm glad for Dissidia as well, as it was the game that made me curious about what Firion's original story was, plus he became my favorite character in that game too.

FFII is a very good game, with a very emotional story. Seriously, have your tissue box ready. I think the backlash it gets is from the leveling, rather than your characters level classically from 1-99, its their stats, weapons, and magic. Which most magic levels up 16 max at a snail's pace, but you don't need to max out the magic to beat the game, and leveling overall isn't as bad as it actually sounds. But FFII is definitely a game you play for the story. So yeah, if you're truly looking for a classic Final Fantasy with a strong, yet surprisingly simple story with memorable characters then yes, play Final Fantasy II, its worth it.

That scratches my Final Fantasy itch"), maybe you could check spin offs later down the line. My personal favourites are Chocobo's Dungeon (wii) and Tactics Advance 2, but I heard a lot of good things about World Of Final Fantasy. So yeah, go nuts! You have a long running saga of beautiful and diverse RPGs to explore at your disposal. Take your time, and most importantly, have fun! (And maybe see you in XIV if you feel like playing a really fun MMORPG!)

I honestly like XIII. I don't care about the stories in games too much unless it's something very interesting. However the gameplay for XIII, for one reason or another, caught my interest and I've found myself playing it like 5 times over. In comparison with its sequals I liked Lighting's Return the most because it focus for on active combat rather than just the turn based and as I played it I always felt in motion. You know you get into a fight with a group of enemies, you open up attacking a single enemy and if their are other close to them I immediately use blitz or some medium sized aoe attack then I see one attacking me I quickly switched to a guard ability and negate that damage then I attack right back and all that. I just felt fluid to me it all felt reactive and free apart from not being to move Lighting very much.

ResonantPilot I think it's very similar to most games really. It's just that FF13 is not afraid to hide it.
@Ragnarokflare17 жыл бұрын
ResonantPilot I personally don't think that's a good battle system either in for the fact that, in that environment, defensive tactics or any kind of buff/debuff abilities are pretty much almost not worth using except for those rare occations of an actual tough enemy if at all. It just didn't feel satisfying fighting against the perceived tough enemies in the game for me because just as long as I had their weaknesses covered and stayed the appropriate level I could almost never lose. It was just rock paper scissors with some rng added into it. I think the only time I had an issue in a battle in Pokemon was my first time against Cynthia in Diamond and that was because I just didn't know her pokemon's typing and I was low on items. At least with FF13 each enemy had their own "weight". If you found out an enemy is tough to defeat you would take the time to buff and debuff because they are worth it. Their "wieght" is great enough to prepare for so that when you next encounter them you have a better chance of beating them and you command the pawns in tandem with the enemies actions. There are fights in 13 that are HARD are continue to be hard even with buffs and debuffs and for me that's more exciting knowing I have to work for a victory than just being able to defeat nearly every opponent in just 2 or 3 hits. Of course to each their own. Just to note I've not played or seen anyone play any of the Persona games so I can't speak anything of that game's combat.

I should try it again. I gave up around thirty hours in when I realized that I just didn't care. The story was cool - as much of it as I saw, anyway, considering that most of the story happens offscreen while we follow Twink Skywalker, Pirate Solo and Sexy Bunny Chewbacca (seriously, you could replace her dialogue with grunts and nothing would change) walk around Ivalice doing heaven knows what to advance the plot - but the gameplay was... awful. The gambit system was a disaster that forced us to program fights into characters instead of, y'know, actually fighting each battle. I didn't want to program fights before entering battles. I wanted to actually do the fights myself.

Then he said, “you can play it on this switch then.” 😭😭😭 We played it when I was a kid, and sick. He’d have the controller, I’d have the guide and walk him through, also give him ideas in tough fights. When I couldn’t sleep from pain, he’d let me use his system and grind to distract myself. We did a lot of bonding through that game. We’d wait to trigger cut scenes until we were both present. Took turns renaming aeons some truly stupid names. I’m loving replaying. Kimhari is set up as a thief in my version, and stealing items to customize weapons later, and I’m only on mushroom rock road. I’m SO happy it’s on Switch. I'm almost done with 13, just started 12(the old one becuase I'm poor) and I'm in the middle of World of Final Fantasy! Any recommendations on what to finish/focus on first? Or what I should play after these? I have every main FF game and the sequels. Edge and Balthier are definitely fave characters of mine, I'm a sucker for flirty, subtle or otherwise peeps. Also, honor and a sense of duty is an added bonus. Story is the biggest thing for me, if that helps!

FF Tactics is the best game in the franchise to me, but I usually don't include it in "main series" lists because it's technically a spin-off despite how great it is. I also think it has the absolute longest learning curve out of any of the games, lol. Seriously, it took me like 6 years altogether to beat because I would just get mad and quit as a kid. Playing it (and finally finishing it) as an adult, it's amazing the amount of depth that game has, and not just for its time!

@sammisomara6 жыл бұрын
I dunno man, I'd say 4 is definitely a good place to start IF you want to get a feel for the earlier games in particular, but it's not really indicative of the series as a whole. That and well, it's easily one of the most depressing ones. There is so much character death, and I think that might scare a lot of people off. Not to mention it takes itself more seriously than probably any other Final Fantasy, spoony bards notwithstanding, so it makes the story a bit harder to get into for some. It's basically the melodramatic soap opera of the Final Fantasy multiverse. It's also very difficult as far as Final Fantasy games go, so it can easily intimidate more casual gamers. That said, it definitely does still have the potential to get someone hooked on the series. I mean, it was MY first, and now I'm obsessed. Still one of my favorites, too. Just, I know a lot of people who don't agree. Kind of an acquired taste.

Agree with this. You don't have to worry about changing jobs and customizing your skill progression. It's just 'Here are your characters. They are this class. At these levels they learn these things." And then you can move on to 5 if you really like the class system stuff and want a little more freedom, or you can move on to 6 if you like the many-character thing with serious storyline, or you can move on to 7 (PC) if you feel like the 16-bit graphics are annoying.
