one of the best videos about a multitool i have seen in the recent years. some things that matters to me but bot everyone: The jaws of the tip of the piler head is a flat section. There are multiple reasons I can think of for this, but it interfere with some of the applications I have. I always think mini pliers to be "extreme tweezers"--things with limited strength but great precison for harder delicate work. While the ps4 style has neither strength nor tweezer level precison, the pliers on victorinox knives have formidable strength for its size and very good precison. I am not to disappointed with the powerpint because the plier head is strong enough. This is also one of the reason why I prefer the older leatherman plierhead where the tip is much more refined(In my view multitools' applications are entire different than full size tools) The bit holder has two convex bulges that fit the detent of most bits, but will cause decreased retention for perfectly smooth bits. The smoothness of the pliers will cause it to easily open when I move too fast. Even when held against the side of the pocket by putting it on the very edge of the right pocket, It still sometimes open (perhaps I played with it too often and it is too smooth). I have heard some people's solutions, like putting magnets on plier handles and tying rubber bands. I even thought about making a piece that will fit on the end of the tool and clamp the handles. For rhis reason I never carried it via the clip. Since I am a weird person and uses the awl often, I can say that the design is very strange. It is still quite functional, but I really see th potential of a victorinox styled one in there(I can see that they are trying to give you the most amount of material that will fit beside the piler head) Just a note that the awl is too sharp and the tip broke off with by first normal use on wood. The file is also a thing I use that others don't do often. I observe that the cross cut is on the outside and the single cut is on the inside. Clearly the designer suppose the user would use the more aggressive crosscut more often(since the tool gets in the way when using the side on the inside). The edge file(or cutter) has teeth pointing toward the tool, which is opposite of victorinox file(pros and cons). The through finger notch really removes the functionality of the lower part of the file greatly. I would prefer a notch to a hole. I really think the knife shape is perfect, but the sharpening is really lacking. This shape of knife allows fine work and great control if you put a finger behind the tip. This makes so much sense as this is what a small knife needs to do. On the other hand, the angle of sharpening is pathetic for the above application, and the sharpening is quite bad. I really do think the micro screw driver is good. You might not notice that it doesn't fit most eyeglass, but instead work on the screws of common electronics(phillips and flathead) and small plastic products, which usually have deep recesses. Also, a utility poking tool cannot be underestinmated. I really like serrated knife on it. The reasoning for me is that my multitool isn't trying to replace my main tools, but instead introduce functions that are not comprimised as much by size or totally new. I think that they should remove the bottle opener and replace it with something else. I believe that this is not a function I would want to introduce into a pair of pliers. Philips is better than average Wire crimper is useful if you want a lot of leverage on things, and works as well as that of full-size multitools I really hope they can replace the scissers with the 58mm vic ones. I prefer anvil type cutters on small pliers, but understand that they are less duarable I carry the powerpint with victorinox ranger. A lot of the functions are redendent, but the pint is for its pliers, micro driver, philips alone. It also is more functional to carry 6-inch vise grips(needlenose) with the vic ranger, but as a person that tinkers with stuff all the time, the 6-inch vise grip and a pair of surgical needle holder(underrated tool, yoiu never realize how useful it is until you handle it) never leaves by bag.
@thevineclimber10 ай бұрын
Wow, this is a great description! I would love to watch a video talking about all of this! I have come around to the serrated knife since I made the video. If a regular blade is nice and sharp, then it cuts through even tough cardboard boxes very easily. But once it's not that sharp, it is true that you're better off with a serrated blade! It's better for rope, too, of course, but I can't say I cut rope that often. The Powerpint and the Ranger is an interesting combo, but I think you are getting duplicates of the tools it sounds like you use, so that's actually kind of cool. The other thing you're getting with the Ranger is a flat screwdriver! LOL I am happy to hear someone else talk about a "utility poking tool" - I totally agree! There are so many things that you probably don't want to touch, or can't quite reach/depress. It's awesome to have something that can actually do this task for you! For me the usual tool for this is the fish scaler/fish hook disgorger on the Swiss champ. What a great comment! Thanks so much, and for the kind words about this video. :)

I'd much rather have a flat head screwdriver than a bottle opener. I honestly can't remember the last time I needed one since the advent of the twist-off bottle cap. It seems that companies are determined to include a bottle opener on every gadget though. It was actually the bottle opener on the Kershaw Shuffle DIY that made me decide not to buy it. They put it right on the back of the handle and it looks really uncomfortable.

Great video Anne! I learned some new things! :) I have done quite a bit of modding to my own Powerpint to make it just that much better for different uses, including turning the cap lifter into a small flathead (obviously with it being that thin it needs to be used accordingly as is the case with the whole tool, since it is small). Another mod that was important for me was (were?) the scissors: I sharpened them to a slightly smaller angled edge, I took off the lip that limits their opening and I filed down the "feeding stopper" that you mentioned in the video). They have no issues cutting through paracord and rope now, though they are still a bit small and stiff. Two other tips/comments is that if you are bending thicker wire and the situation allows it, using the wire crimpers to grip the wire allows for much more sideways torque without twisting the plier head and the other thing is that when closed, the bit holder area (which is awesome) can also be used to hold t and u-shank saw blades.
@thevineclimber10 ай бұрын
What?! Really?! You can hold t and u shank blades in the bit holder??? I am totally floored by this. Your mods sound great. Really, what else could you want? You have made it, essentially, perfect! Thank you very much for sharing. Gonna try those saw blades...
@MustaLaatta Жыл бұрын
Have power pint and will keep it. The main reason is that it's bigger than Gerber Dime fits in fifth pocket, has a good pocket clip and unlike your version has a good magnet. Also - there's a way to make yours stronger: "Magnets that have lost their strength Sometimes you can recharge a magnet that has lost some of its original charge. If you can find a very strong (neodymium?) magnet, repeatedly rub it across your weakened magnet. The strong magnet will realign the magnetic domains inside the weakened magnet [source: Luminaltech]."
@thevineclimber Жыл бұрын
No WAY! your bit stays in when you use the tool for like, the knife or something? Yes, one of the things I value about it is the loads of function for the small size. Very easy to pocket carry! I mean, I know you can temporarily magnetize ferrous metals, so it makes sense that you could make a magnet stronger... or maybe wallet if I put it the wrong way! But that won't happen because they will fight each other and I'll notice they are not stuck together, obviously. Thanks!!

I also wish there were a bigger flathead, but I solved the problem by carrying around a bit extender and two-sided bit in my wallet that I stole from my Ozark Trail Multiforce (Leatherman Wave clone). Now when I need a regular Phillips or flathead I go to my wallet and Presto! Problem solved.

@@thevineclimberThat mod would be cool, but would still only work for light duty tasks. Too much torque on that little bottle opener would snap it right off. But it doesn't necessarily want to stay and I'm worried to lose it. The clip is what it needs. I think it's so funny that you paired it with the fast back, and then said the one with the screwdriver! @@thevineclimber me personally I use a #2 Phillips on almost a daily basis, you don't know how many multitools and Swiss army knives I've ruined because once the Phillips wears out it's useless to me, I used to carry the gerber razor knives because I hate a dull blade and I also hate sharpening, when I saw the fastback with a "90%" screwdriver on it, it just made sense. FYI I also carry a mini champ, and a Carlyle 4" adjustable wrench Carlyle because it's the only one I've found that opens just over 9/16 or 18mm, where most open to just over half. Really like this longer video style. It's nice to get a really detailed look at the tool while also getting some of the thoughts and observations that wouldn't normally be added in a shorter video. Honestly, I kinda feel like 99% of people would be happier if they switched the scissors to the left side and put a flathead where they used to be. Serrated blades are nice and all but really not as necessary as a flathead.
@thevineclimber Жыл бұрын
Yes!! Totally. I'd also take a flat head in place of the can opener. Or at the end of the file. Or instead of the awl, or the package opener or frickin' ANYTHING!! I get irate when i think about this. SUCH a neat miss, but entirely a miss for me. I think what they were thinking was that people would just carry a flat head and use it in the driver. But that's completely not practical. I tried really, really hard, and you just need to stick a bit in your pocket to make it work, and if I'm doing that, why even carry this? It's not like it's some specialty bit. I was, like, pissed off the entire month I carried this. It's not like you can just keep the bit in the driver, because while it's fine while you carry it, it WILL fall out when you use any tools. How silly did I look in line at the store (trying to file a rough nail) with a screwdriver bit falling in the floor? A multitool cannot add hassle to your life. Also, thanks for the feedback on the longer format. That was very nice.

A slit down from the top/other end, as the top has a hole for attachment. Then very importantly, a safety lanyard attached to the hone, in case it escapes from the sheath. I do not use the attachment hardware it is packaged with. Since diamonds can scratch anything, I like it inside something. I'm glad to help. By the way I would like to sincerely apologize for the misspellings, in my last message. I use speech to text software for all my typing needs due to a physical disability. And I was using my phone to send my last comment. I'm glad the Zippo bit safe will help your EDC. The best place I found to get the bit safe, is from blade HQ; as the Zippo website seems to constantly be out of them. Received my first PowerPint yesterday, and you are right, it is definitely a good thing to have in the EDC collection even if you collect Swiss army names and multi tools. It's nice to have something super small and capable, for the days when a Swiss army knife isn't quite enough and a full size multi-tool is overkill. Anyway I hope the Zippo bit safe works out for you. Thanks again for all the great videos, as long as you keep making them I'll keep watching.

Yeah thankfully though my voice to text software, has never got me in serious trouble. Meaning that I've never sent any serious errors too anyone important like my boss :-). I would love to hear your thoughts on the Zippo bit safe. The important thing I've noticed is a lot of reviewers on KZbin are saying they don't like it because you can't use, the bit that is stored in the place where the lighters chimney would be, because the rid of the Zippo gets in the way of turning the bit. Everyone seems to forget that the whole idea behind the bit safe from Zippo is having a nifty way to store the bits in your pocket not use them in the writer itself. The box even recommends that you take the specific bit you want out of the lighter and put it in a bit driver of your choosing. That being said I took my power pint and the bit safe to work with me today. The bit safe is definitely a nice way to carry your most important everyday carry driver bits they don't rattle they're not loose and the form factor is awesome. Not to mention the fidget Factor is off the charts. The Zippo still makes the famous when you open and close it with the bit safe inside. :-) the bit safe itself has good magnetic retention so even if you drop your Zippo they're not going to go anywhere. Anyway, I will shut up now :-) have an absolutely outstanding and lovely day. Thanks again for all of your great videos, especially the ones concerning so we're throwing knives, I've been a die-hard Swiss army guy for years :-).

A couple of the other things your mother didn’t tell you about this little powerhouse of a multitool.... * it has a sister......PowerLitre slightly different tool set, but it has an arm that locks the handle closed, this exponentially increases the usability of the bit holder. It would solve your bit falling out issue. The PowerLitre has a cork screw which I never use but have mod’d/straightened to form a travellers hook/right angle scribe.....much more functional....for me * not only that but the bit holder can grab jigsaw blades (just have to slip a bit of heat shrink tube over the tang of the blade to make super secure. PS it will also hold 1/4” hex shaft drill bits * the pliers gearing allows you to hold things open rather than just hold thing closed.....like circlips * modding the can opener to make it a useable flathead profile Is real easy and gives the tool extra stand alone functionality. * another mod is to sharpen the inside of the package opener (makes it a really functional zip tie cutter), some people sharpen the outside edge to....but I prefer just to file it so it has a hard 90 degree chamfer which improves its scraping performance but doesn’t risk damaging/cutting stuff when I’m using the inside edge. * If you pair this multitool with the full set of Leatherman wave accessories and bits ..... you get a comprehensive very compact tool set

Oh, you're kidding! I'm telling you there is something about availability and absolute readiness for use that makes one tool so much better than another tool for me. I really hate inside opening tools, for example. Not that I think I shouldn't have to work that hard to get the tool out. But it's just more than the effort. I want to put forth and sometimes I leave little tasks undone. I bet you're the same way - the little hassle of carrying the power pint in that cool holster even with the bits, it's enough to where that Gerber dime is faster and easier to access.

Another great video Anne 👏 I did the mod to my PowerPint for the cap lifter flat head, sharpening the belt cutter exterior edge to make a box cutter and I keep it in a little bug out kit along with 4 in knipex pliers, a mini flashlight, and a small ratchet/extension/extra bits. It's about as big as my wallet. Also have a pen and field note notebook. It fits in my pants pocket easily. The small zipper/pocket pouch is from Hide & Drink (thanks to you for introducing me to the brand😊) but the PowerPint fits perfectly and securely in one of the exterior pockets due to it's size and the great pocket clip. Thanks for showing us the markings for the angles on the protractor 🤔 my old eyes never saw them. Now I know how to properly use it. Great job as always thank you for sharing this!

You are so funny. The rambling-ness is fine, it sounds like you had fun. I've been carrying the powerpint for about a year or more. I have a small collection of bits I carry with me. You can often find yourself with several small bit holders that are flexible plastic, they often come with "sets" of bits from multi-screwdrivers and the like. If you put your bits in one, then put another one over the top, facing down, you'll encase the bits and make a small light softish thing, and I use a hair tie to hold it and a short bit extender together. The hair tie wrapped about the tool helps a little with the dropping out part, but not really enough. Still love the thing, I carry it and another smallish knife, right now a spyderco chaparral. Fits perfect in a little pocket I have. And it has no flathead screwdriver! But you can open that beer...

Also, those zeros o the ruler I think are just cross pins not actual number etched/recessed into the part for function of the ruler. Lastly it does come with a flat head it’s just small so I’m assuming you saying it doesn’t is cause wanting it to come with a larger sized flat head

What I like best about the PowerPint is it's the smallest (which means lightest) possible pliers you can make that use a full, four-finger grip. Hand tools which use your entire hand grip are in a much higher class of usefulness and have a markedly stronger grip than little, fiddly "multi-tools" which are really just glorified keychain toys. I was using my pliers on my Power Point one day and broke off the tip on one side. Of course I was upset and felt I ruined my Power Pint. However, I simply went to my grinder and ground down the opposite side and rounded both tips evenly. A word of caution to anyone trying to use the needle nose to the extreme. I did find having the needle nose shorter actually works well for me and has made it virtually impossible to break the needle nose again. I plan on the modification of the cap lifter into a flat head, but have been hesitant as I'm freaked out I might screw up my Awesome Power Pint needlessly.

Wow! Great breakdown of the design decisions involved! I gotta say, the design is clever... Imo, drop the serrated blade, the can opener and bottle opener. Reshape the bottle opener into a flathead by filling the hollow space that's meant to go around a bottle cap.. That'd leave two slots open. What to put there? Maybe a figure out how to get a tweezers in there?

I love it! This redesign could be the PowerPint 2.0. I know some people want a can opener, but could it be enough that so many multitools need it? I DO think that many people seem to like the serrated blade, and I have changed my opinion of it a bit since this video. But if I could have tweezers on this, it would be awesome! And 100% agree that the bottle opener should be dropped and make it a flathead! I can't BELIEVE there is no flathead!!! Thanks for the comment! And watching!
