🚀QUICK QUESTION: Are you an Extrovert or an Introvert?
@ladyethyme7 ай бұрын
Introvert!
@drmathochist067 ай бұрын
Introvert. And yeah, I lean harder towards long lenses. Obviously when shooting birds, but even in landscapes. I think that an even better way of getting at it than the "desert-island lens" question is what framings you tend to see. When I'm walking around and I see a good composition, it's always a smaller part of the whole landscape, somewhere around 135mm if not longer. I know some other people just have a "wider" eye, where I have a "longer" eye. Street photographers, in particular, seem to just see the world in 35mm, if not 24mm. Or maybe that's just the ones who flood the photo social media spaces...

I use my sigma 150-600mm contemporary for most of my photography. And yes, I’m an Introvert. 👍
@careylymanjones7 ай бұрын
Introvert, but I still love the 35mm full-frame equivalent FOV. I love to catch a bit of the subject's context, too. 35mm is perfect, for that. Long lenses are great, when you CAN'T get closer, because there's a river or a canyon between you and the subject. But as Robert Capa famously said, "If your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough."
@marklowden2867 ай бұрын
I am definitely an introvert. However, I shoot real-estate photography on the side, so according to LR metadata, I shoot mainly 15mm. But, when shooting for enjoyment, I am definitely using an 80-400 tele, OR, my 105 macro. I really enjoy macro, because usually I don't notice everything I am photographing until I photo stack and process.

Short focal length prime (24-55mm) user, and hardcore introvert - INFP, high functioning ASD, severe ADHD. Have visual snow syndrome, tinnitus, and a bunch of other sensory processing disorders. I can hide behind my short focal length lens, and be part of something without actually being part of it. The sensory processing issues mean I also need massive amounts of sensory input to experience something everybody else might experience at a fraction of the intensity. Was in a number of band - still play guitar when my health allows - and I could not play if I had earplugs in. I mean, I could play, but not quite on, and with no extra expressive or accent notes. We’re talking Marshall and Mesa Boogie stacks, but yes, I did have the tinnitus before, and actually have a congenital defect that causes me to have pulsative tinnitus in one ear. The primes help me get close enough to an experience or person, whereas my zooms, only 2, leave me feeling like I didn’t actually experience whatever, and that it was just a dream. 🤙

Good food for thought. I use the 17-35 mainly for landscapes and 70-300 on my crop sensor, mainly for motor racing and tennis. I shoot the 2 subject matters, roughly 50/50. I catagorize myself as confused.

I self-dentify as introverted, rather an in introvert. I prefer a sliding scale. That being said, according to Lightroom, I shoot long telephoto (200 mm) about 2/3s of the time and short telephoto (
@davidligon60887 ай бұрын
The problem with that method is that I will shoot bursts of photos for wildlife, and a lot fewer images for landscape. The longer telephotos obviously show more shots than wider focal lengths, but I don’t think that correlates with which focal length I use the most. I do tend to be more introverted, but I think the lens I use the most is a 20-70 G which is primarily used in single shot mode.

There’s also a term called ambivert which, falls somewhere in between extrovert and introvert. Or has features of both. How that would translate into the types of lenses someone would use would be an interesting study as well.

Wow, that really got me thinking about it. With my very small circle of friends I will probably be more the centre of attention but I am naturally shy and my social diary tends to be empty. Usually favouring a 70 - 200 zoom, I recently bought a 10-20 wide angle which I am loving. In the last 30 minutes, I have literally just unpacked my new 18 - 300 lens which I feel will be my new best friend and probably really does capture my personality traits. Great video and very thought provoking (you can see why I have few friends 🙂)

My all time favorite lens and the one I would pick to use for the rest of my days will be Canon 100/2.8L IS USM Macro. I like shooting details of the whole scene, and to keep my distance. This wonderfully shows my personality. So yes, spot on.
@johnparry15827 ай бұрын
Mark, I never really thought about there being a connection between lenses used and personality traits but having looked at the lenses I mostly use, I would say I use telephoto or zoom lenses on a majority of occasions. As a person who generally does not like to push myself forward or be the centre of attention I guess this falls into line with this concept. Thanks and keep up the good work.

After checking, I seemed to be using my Olympus 40-150mm f4 (80-300mm in 35mm terms) a heck of a lot! Then I hurt my back, bought a Lumix 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 as was lighter, and that’s now in second place. Still tend to use it, along with some Primes. Mostly use it for creative shots. Thanks Mark, very enlightening! Didn’t think I was an extrovert, might have been once! From the range, probably both!

I consider myself to be an introvert. I prefer to work alone. On a tour I will often wander off and do my thing. My lens of choice is 24-70mm f2.8 which I guess will confirm that I am an introvert. However here is the kicker ... I am an extrovert when I am taking environmental portraits - typically peoples of much different cultures than my own. I like to engage the people to get more relaxed portraits and to share some of my culture with them. Just like politics - assigning labels to an individual is not very wise. LOL

Hands down my most used lens ( I only have two) is my Fuji 70-300 zoom. On top of that I use a 1.4x teleconverter quite a bit as well. So, I would have to say your analysis is spot on. I'm not a very social guy. My favorite day is being out in the forest all by my lonesome with no one to bug me. If I hear people coming down a trail I'll sometimes even step off into the woods to let them pass. It's not that I don't like people it's just that I like me better than anyone else I know.

Very interesting! I am indeed an introvert, although sometimes I call myself an extroverted introvert. I get my energy from being around a bunch of friends, but won’t go out of my way to join in the festivities. The lens I use most is a lens I believe is a kit lens, my trusty 24-120mm. Sooo. That kind of fits! I want to be close to the action, but also want to pull away from it at the same time.

Depends on what I am shooting; 24-70 for still life…70-200 for action. I am a proud introvert. I can stand in the middle of a room full of people and never say a word and be perfectly happy. I hate it when I go somewhere and they want the group to interact by saying “tell us something about yourself.” NO! 😳😳😳🤷🏼♂️

Lately it's been the old (2003) EF 17-40 f/4 I've been using mostly. Nice and compact/ light and works for my needs. Doing more close up's drawing people into the bigger picture. Like a traffic sign big and close with an old church in the background. Wide angle seems to be working best for what I generally do. I've been doing more video and am a handheld shooter. I'm a extrovert, but like shooting alone and the best locations I see no other people.

I'm VERY introverted. On my Nikon Z5 which I picked up earlier this year, I only had a 50mm lens, so most of my photos this year are at 50mm. I did pick up the 24-70mm recently, and I'd say I do either use 24mm or 70mm most now, with 35mm being a close third. My previous camera (SL3) I used the 24mm pancake lens most, which works out to 38mm FF. So in general, I'd say I sit around the 35-50mm for the past few years as where I shoot most.

Most used focal length on that lens... 50 mm :P Introvert vs extrovert - introvert but I'm also a cinematographer so I tend to lean on mid to wide lenses so I can reveal bits of a whole story over time rather than zooming in on partial details via my lens. Zoom with yer feet, also I like fast primes so I can control the depth of field.

Based on this 'analysis' I am an introvert. According to Lightroom, I shoot the most with my Tamron 150-500mm. I only purchased it last year before a trip to Alaska. I tend to shoot to continuous or burst mode to freeze the action of a bird. Therefore, there are A LOT of photos with that lens. I do tend to like a more intimate image which often times leaves out the surrounding details. Very interesting indeed.

Difficult question, when photographing people as in street photography, there are different schools of thought, two old photographers from the WPA era Walker Evans who often hid the camera under his coat, and Dorothea Lange who would take time to talk to people to get their story first. I favor the second method, with privacy laws being what they are, we are constrained to use a "Normal" lens, meaning you have to be close enough to your subject so they can say no pictures please. In order to do this, I have to "Screw up my courage" as Shakespeare said and operate from a position of strength which is not my normal personality, but when walking in the city one must be always mindful of "Spatial Awareness" showing no fear. My personal preference would be a medium telephoto, good for portraits while still keeping your distance so I guess that makes me an extroverted Introvert, Ha Ha, good luck with that!
@Mariner14607 ай бұрын
My initial thought was that it’s more likely the connection is between personality and preferred genre with lens choice merely being highly correlated with genre and thus also with personality. Then, I thought about my own photography which, by volume at least, is mostly events. I have two modes: 1) candid (“spy shots”) and 2) in the mix (“‘Razzi shots”). I’m more comfortable being the spy, and it shows in my lens choice: nearly 2 to 1 in favor of telephoto over standard focal lengths.

For my current camera -- a Nikon D5100, which is APS-C -- my desert island lens is my Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 Contemporary. If I had a full frame digital camera, it'd likely be a 24-120 or 24-105 f/4. The lens I used most on my D5100 until I got the Sigma was the kit lens (18-55 f/3.5-5.6). Over the years, my most used focal lengths (outside of the extremes) have been 24mm (FF FOV 35-36mm) and 28mm (FF FOV 42mm), all on zoom lenses as I don't own any primes. I'm an introvert.
@paullewis69407 ай бұрын
I think it might also depend on what your genre of photography you mostly undertake I mostly shoot nature/wildlife so will generally use longer lenses, but maybe that style also reflects my personality happy to spend lengthy periods of time alone or with just one or two friends quietly watching and observing. I see where you are coming from up close and personal Vs standing back but I think the question is perhaps more complex. I very much enjoy your videos they are informative unhurried and a pleasure to watch. Thank you

I‘m introvert and my favourite lens is a mid range zoom, atm the 20-70 F4. Most used focal length is 35mm, follwed closely by 24mm. What I noticed in Lightroom is that if I use a zoom lens I often tend to use it at its extremes, so the shortest and longest focal length. Which leads to the assumption that if I had a shorter or longer focal length in those cases, I would probably have used it.
@pithaupert7 ай бұрын

Hmm - what an interesting theory. One of my best photo friends uses her 100-400mm lens about 75-80% of the time when we go out shooting together and she is a self-confessed introvert!

I also filtered for only my 3 star or higher images which would be my post, share, or print category so I avoid over counting for wildlife burst shots on the longer lens. To my surprise my 70-200 had more than twice as many 3 star photos as both of those wide zooms and my 20mm prime combined. I had been toying with getting a 100-400 and debating how much I would use it, this seems to tell me I would use it a lot. Anyway interesting video and concept, I learned something useful from it.

According to this theory I'm introverted because I use a 28-300mm most when shooting for myself. I've used this lens in studio work, landscape and just goofing off. Most of what I shoot is real estate and for that I am married to my 12-24mm Sigma Art Burt I rarely load these photos in Lightroom Classic so it appears intermittently in my metadata. I also love my 105mm macro. Perhaps I dwell somewhere in between regardless of Lightroom's metadata.

My most used lenses are prime short telephotos! The 85mm macro eqv (50 macro on crop/ 135 on medium format) I do about 90 percent of my photo work with just that lens. Which is weird cause i don't shoot macro... I shoot portraits, landscape and lifestyle. So where does that put my personality?

I have 3 prime lenses that do not provide metadata--manual focus, no electrical connection with the camera--so the Lightroom metadata function isn't helpful. That said, I consider myself an introvert but my "only one lens" is my 25mm f/2, manual focus on my Sony a6600--so, a 37mm full-frame equivalent. But I use the combo "from the shadows." I'm not an in-your-face" photographer. I shoot from the hip, I'll shoot in silent mode or my favorite: I set my camera on the table at a cafe (outside table) and control the shutter with my phone, so people can't see that i'm making photos. The combo is very compact (it's the Ttartisans 25mm, for $80), very unobtrusive.

Also, the 100-400 is first only because I've had it longer. Although, I do prefer the 100-400 for deer photography because it's lighter and has a better keeper rate than the 150-600.

Good fun. I suspect that one might have to use two variables - focal length and focus distance. I'd bet that macro photographers, wildlife buffs and landscapers who like compression shots are classic introverts. But what about street photographers? Standard or wide angle and trying to be invisible. Hmm. Here's my bet, photographers as a population skew towards introversion. We must be thoughtful, patient and voyeuristic by nature - don't you think? Keep 'em coming - love it.

My favourite focal length is 50mm I’ve tried changing up lenses but keep going back to the 50mm

Interesting. I'm an ambivert, and usually use my phone's camera lense, but recently been using the fujifilm finepix s1730, and mostly haven't used the zoom feature (until recently).

I really think it depends on what lenses you have-- I have never owned prime lenses always telephoto. due to the fact that I physically don't move all that well. My lenses change on what I have - for years 24 x 105 was my go to lens- then during the pandemic I started using my 70-200 a lot-- Then I switch to mirrorless and got the 100-500 and started more wildlife photography so that is my go to lens ( I go a lot to a drive through bird refuge) -- I feel I am an introvert but most people in the groups I photograph with say I never shut up-- I guess I am a mish mash of all -- LOL

Interesting. I mostly use Nikon 55-300, and definitely am introvert. I enjoy company but only for limited time.

This is actually interesting, because while I'm not saying or suggesting you're wrong, I feel it's the opposite for me... I like to shoot wider focal lengths and while part of it is true (like telling the whole story, showing the full scene), the part about being extraverted for me isn't quite the truth, and actually probably far from it to be honest (now I understand these "assumptions" are not set in stone and that many people will probably have some but not all characteristics, and that's probably the case here with me). I will say though that I've sort of shifted away from wider focal lengths and have moved more towards more standard to telephoto focal lengths over the past few years, as I felt the wider focal lengths were getting a bit "boring" I guess. Now part of it may just be what I was taught and told early on (for example, shooting landscape with a wide angle lens was the most common way to photograph landscapes--not realy). Of course I do find myself sort of going between both but starting to gravitate more towards the tighter shots and keeping things more simple. And maybe when it comes to landscape, that's the progression we go through, and some continue on the wide angle path, while others may venture off to the more telephoto/intimate style, and some may just flip back and forth between the two. But either way, this was interesting for me to think about this. That being said, I still think my Z 24-200mm lens is probably the one I would pick if I had to only pick one as it goes from wide to telephoto (I don't shoot much beyond 200mm generally), but it would be one lens that could cover a wide range, versus say just a wide lens or just a telephoto lens. So I guess you could say I'm a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to focal length choices and it also depends on the particular task -- for travel, I do both, for landscapes, I do both but have been gravitating more twoards telephoto as i mentioned. For portraits I tend to prefer more telephoto (although we could say standard to telephoto, so say 50mm-200mm depending on the type of portrait/shot). About Lightroom, the funny thing is that when I find myself looking at a potential lens purchase, one of the things I do is I look at my library to see if I'd actaully use that focal length that much or not and use that as a guide as to whether the purchase may be worthwhile or not. Obviously, some lenses offer specific FLs for more specific purposes like a 105mm macro lens, so even if you don't shoot 105mm or macro that much, that would probably be an exception and you'd have to then look at how much you think you'd use it, but when I find myself considering the Z 100-400 for example, I look back at all of my favorite images and see how many did I really shoot at such FLs, and in reality, not many that I bothered to hold onto and keep (I did some, but they weren't that great so they likely ended up being trashed or are archived somewhere, but they didn't quite make the cut to be in my portfolio or even shared, so I've held off for now, and sort of glad I did this exercise because that is not a cheap lens (With a few exceptions, like the macro lens, I hate buying gear that I end up not using because it's money on the shelf, and I Feel somewhat the same way about the 100-400mm even though at some point, I may end up with one, as I can see some possibilities there, but that's also just imaginging what the possibilities would be versus reality and what I do shoot (I have rented it before, but in reality, didn't use it much for such trips and one reason I sort of kept talking myself out of it, so it's a useful tool in LR to see what FLs you shoot at and what lenses and cameras you use most).

My favorite lens to shoot with is 70-200.. and I’m definitely an introvert! But lately I’ve been forcing myself to only shoot with my 50mm when out and about to break out of my shell. Very interesting theory!

For me, when using my Sony FF camera, it's the Tamron 28-300 80% of the time. When using my Fuji cameras, it's the Fuji 18-55.

I am an extrovert most of the time but when I am out photographing I am more of an introvert ! I use mostly my 70-300mm , and close second my Viltrox 13mm But when I check my highest rated pictures, my Viltrox 13mm wins by far! So Mark looks like you are correct again:) Cheers Garret

135mm is my favorite. I like building panoramas with that focal length. I have known I am an introvert for a long time.

Interesting, I used to shoot Canon and I had a 18-135mm, 70-200mm and a 100mm macro, the most used one was the 18-135 followed by the 100 macro, currently I shoot Fuji and I have a 56mm, and 80mm macro and the 56 is used the most, I have to say, since I don't have a shorter focal length I found myself using the 56mm in portrait mode while shooting landscape (creating panoramas). Based on the information I will be considered an extrovert while I feel personally more as an introvert, may be I am wrong 🧐

This is very interesting. I enjoy wide angle prime lens. Im not drawn to zoom. I can’t explain exactly why and never put much thought to it. Ironically, I prefer at work being part of a team. While socially I’m a bit of a loner, although I’m able to blend when I find myself in that environment.

Mine would be the macro lens, even though most my shots are either my 50mm or my 100-300mm zoom, macro is my favorite

I think it depends on the genre. I primarily sports, so I'm using long focal lengths (70-200 and 100-400) to get up close to people. (You could theoretically shoot sports up close with a 35mm or 50mm but if the sport is basketball or American football, you'd have to be on the court with the players and the longevity of your equipment (and you) might be severely limited.)

Just noting down my answers as I follow along your video... Fuji 70-300mm would be that one lens. I'm an Introvert. What I use most often? Sorry I cannot quickly get that info out of CaptureOne, but besides, this would give a _very_ skewed picture for me as I have a lot of photos taken with the 150-600mm when shooting birds, in burst shots. (Well, it is another long zoomlens, but my point is: I have a lot of pictures shot with that lens b/c I often shoot with that lens in burst, more than with other lenses). So far, this matches your theory... Now a counterpoint: I really really like my 65mm and 80mm macro prime lenses. Yeah they're not wide-angle but they're primes... 😉 I really enjoy macro photography. I don't know what that says about my personality! 😂
