Something odd just happened when I opened this video. An AI like audio translation into German was activated and I thought I am looking at a rip off channel. Only after checking the options under the Settings menu of the video did I noticed a entry called Audiotrack. Is this new? This crap was never activated before. Also, does anyone know how i can completely shut off subtitles? I already turned these off in my general preferences, but they still get activated on some videos - like with this one.

Something to remember on the Starship HLS, it will be MUCH lighter in dry mass than a regular starship. No fins, no heat shield, and likely a different engine configuration. It doesn't need three sea level raptors, they might go with a cluster of vac-raps and all gimbled.

Blue Origin is an older company than SpaceX. They still haven't made orbit while Falcon just celebrated 400 successful launches. Starship is their long term platform. Before anyone else reaches enough scale to begin competing with Falcon 9/Heavy. It takes 12+ launches per year to make reusable a good business case. Hence why Arriane 6 and ULA remain disposable.

they did however land the first rocket that reached space. they have been a space tourism company for years, and appear to be the only successful one at that. virgin galactic is embroiled in a lot of difficulties, hard to call it a successful company. new shepherd flies with passengers regularly and is fully reusable. quite an accomplishment. they have only recently pivoted to orbital flight and announced the new glenn roughly when starship was announced. i think about a year before. if it flies this year which is a big if, it would be pretty much on par with starship development. the Be4 is already flight proven, and put up quite a performance on Vulcan's most recent flight

On landing on the uneven surface of the moon etc, I wondered about the use of lander/airbag systems, like the ones used to land on mars, but rather than impact protection you could inflate a rigid set around the base of the starship and then a program could auto adjust inflation at different points to amend vertical angle nearly instantly to ensure no tip over, I doubt that would work on Mars but on the moon the low gravity would probably allow for it.

I still think there are newer Star ships once the test campaign winds down. I can see a special version of ship as the in orbit fuel depot, as it doesn’t need a full load as well as any cargo space. How about a new optical telescope which is pushed to a higher orbit by a space tug vehicle.

Not thrilled with the header tank(s). It LOOKS like it chews up significant volume of the starship payload capacity and makes the clamshell opening of the starship LOOK impossible. Maybe I am mistaken but it seems like the majority of typical paying customer payloads will not fit through the "pez" dispenser opening. Since one HAS to assume that SpaceX is building this to actually make money, you would think they might have unveiled a variant that actually can deploy large satellites or Dream Chaser. Just a thought.

Yes, what we saw MUST be an early version of a mockup for Starship. One thing that isn't taken into account on that design is center of gravity. With all of the bedrooms for astronauts on one side that would put the center of gravity too far to that side of the space ship. They will need to take mass and weight into account and make sure it is even or they will have a rocket that won't be able to steer straight and the last thing we need is a space ship uses all its fuel while a wheel (you know what I mean) is out of alignment. Anyway, they only released the drawings for a very early version just to mess with people because Elon would never let them make public a close to production version of the layout. It's definitely a very early draft. Also, the likelihood that there will be viewports that astronauts would be able to look out of before exiting the space craft and stepping foot on the moon is unlikely because staring at a screen will not help them get their bearings before the moon or maybe even a space walk. There is still a possibility that they could add another ring to Starship to make the storage area larger. It wouldn't add a significant amount of weight compared to the weight of the whole space ship and they could still use up the whole section that they are partially entering for the tank and fill that whole section with a bigger tank while adding another ring.

Amazing feats already achieved and it seems other major ones just on the horizon but it looks like tons of work is ahead to be done. Some of what spacex are (and will be) doing are stand-alone industries and just imagining the scale of what it will take to get just living on the moon working at scale starts to stretch my imagination. Still i imagine what's required for Mars is some factors more of what we establish works for the moon. SUPER EXCITING. Godspeed to all parties involved 🙌🏾

Of course untreated industrial waste water shouldn’t be released into environment. It should be tested what it contains and it should be reported, both expected and real results. However there must be a authority helping companies fulfill all these requirements.

They should have big empty balloons to catch all the super-heated steam so it doesn’t create really scary clouds. Oh and they should bottle the recovered water and sell it as Boca Chica Springs Starship Mineral Water.

The same issue was recognized in cargo aircraft decades ago. A famous example is when USAF modified its entire fleet of C-141's by lengthening the fuselage. The planes were constantly getting 'cubed out' (the cargo space was full) with unused weight lifting capacity.

Flame diverters should use heat tiles. Would be a great way to test if your tiles can take the heat and the pressure, better then a blow torch as well!
@WilliamJR123
@WilliamJR123 8 сағат бұрын
I could be very wrong but I’m pretty sure the engines get hotter than the re entry temps, all the tiles would likely turn to dust if they got blasted with 33 Raptors

@denysvlasenko1865 8 сағат бұрын
The exhaust from engines is very different from air: different composition, temperature, velocity, and shockwave pattern. The tiles would shatter just from variable shockwaves passing through them. (A common misconception is that exhaust is very hot, whereas it is not very hot but very FAST, ~10 times the speed of sound - because rocket engines by design convert heat into the motion of the gas)

Maybe the Block 2 propellant tank may have been increased in size for test purposes only. This test may be for a full orbit and then land or catch back at base therefore needing more propellant. The much taller Block 3 Starship will be the one with a much larger propellant capacity ready for missions.
@Lu.capuchino

no, it has bigger tanks to carry more payload, block 3 will not only increase the tank size, but it will mostly increase the payload bay size

Block two also has to be able to refuel an orbit which means that it has to be able to fuel multiple times in a row without anybody checking it.

20:06 I can't say for sure, as I do not know what the regulations say. Though at least in the case of SpaceX' water deluge system they where using chlorinated water which is harmful for wildlife. Chlorine or chlorine by-products are especially toxic for fish (marine wildlife) and birds, but in "larger" amounts it can also be harmful for dogs and other animals. I assume Blue Origin is doing the same as SpaceX to prevent the formation of algae in the water tanks and ease of availability. As in at least some areas in the US, chlorinated water is generally used in the water supply, which probably is also the reason Musk said "Literally, you could drink it", as it is just tap water there. So I assume the issue might not be the water getting contaminated by the engines, as methane and especially hydrogen burn very clean, but much rather the toxic chlorine released in the surrounding environment. Since both launch sites are next to open water, with wildlife (fish and birds), I very much see this as an issue which has to be dealt with and not just pushed aside.

Nah, we aren't going to see starship catch attempts until the second tower is capable of catching. It's impossible to catch both super heavy and ship in rapid succession on the same tower with the current design. Aside from the fact there's no reason to, given that most ships will need to go back to a payload integration facility. The obvious exception is, of course, tankers, but I doubt we'll see a ship return to flight with 0 refurbishment for a year or more, at least. Rapid reuse of the booster is the real key to this systems success. The ability to launch, catch the booster, roll another tanker in place, stack, and go again is key.

I think you’re missing something here. They will start using these test flights, not as write offs, but as work. They will start lofting starlink either with flight 6 or 7. This program is very expensive, they’ll economise it very quickly. All lunar/Mars testing progression will start very soon for free off the back of this
