On landing on the uneven surface of the moon etc, I wondered about the use of lander/airbag systems, like the ones used to land on mars, but rather than impact protection you could inflate a rigid set around the base of the starship and then a program could auto adjust inflation at different points to amend vertical angle nearly instantly to ensure no tip over, I doubt that would work on Mars but on the moon the low gravity would probably allow for it.
@old-wise-one447310 сағат бұрын
I still think there are newer Star ships once the test campaign winds down. I can see a special version of ship as the in orbit fuel depot, as it doesn’t need a full load as well as any cargo space. How about a new optical telescope which is pushed to a higher orbit by a space tug vehicle.

Not thrilled with the header tank(s). It LOOKS like it chews up significant volume of the starship payload capacity and makes the clamshell opening of the starship LOOK impossible. Maybe I am mistaken but it seems like the majority of typical paying customer payloads will not fit through the "pez" dispenser opening. Since one HAS to assume that SpaceX is building this to actually make money, you would think they might have unveiled a variant that actually can deploy large satellites or Dream Chaser. Just a thought.

Yes, what we saw MUST be an early version of a mockup for Starship. One thing that isn't taken into account on that design is center of gravity. With all of the bedrooms for astronauts on one side that would put the center of gravity too far to that side of the space ship. They will need to take mass and weight into account and make sure it is even or they will have a rocket that won't be able to steer straight and the last thing we need is a space ship uses all its fuel while a wheel (you know what I mean) is out of alignment. Anyway, they only released the drawings for a very early version just to mess with people because Elon would never let them make public a close to production version of the layout. It's definitely a very early draft. Also, the likelihood that there will be viewports that astronauts would be able to look out of before exiting the space craft and stepping foot on the moon is unlikely because staring at a screen will not help them get their bearings before the moon or maybe even a space walk. There is still a possibility that they could add another ring to Starship to make the storage area larger. It wouldn't add a significant amount of weight compared to the weight of the whole space ship and they could still use up the whole section that they are partially entering for the tank and fill that whole section with a bigger tank while adding another ring.

It's amazing what a setback it can be to take your foot off the gas. Manned missions to the moon in the 60s, and then entropy. Now 6 decades later starting from scratch with new people, tech, & manufacturing ramp up. Imagine if the transition had been continuous. "Always be thrusting."

The exhaust from engines is very different from air: different composition, temperature, velocity, and shockwave pattern. The tiles would shatter just from variable shockwaves passing through them. 20:06 I can't say for sure, as I do not know what the regulations say. Though at least in the case of SpaceX' water deluge system they where using chlorinated water which is harmful for wildlife. Chlorine or chlorine by-products are especially toxic for fish (marine wildlife) and birds, but in "larger" amounts it can also be harmful for dogs and other animals. I assume Blue Origin is doing the same as SpaceX to prevent the formation of algae in the water tanks and ease of availability. As in at least some areas in the US, chlorinated water is generally used in the water supply, which probably is also the reason Musk said "Literally, you could drink it", as it is just tap water there. So I assume the issue might not be the water getting contaminated by the engines, as methane and especially hydrogen burn very clean, but much rather the toxic chlorine released in the surrounding environment. Since both launch sites are next to open water, with wildlife (fish and birds), I very much see this as an issue which has to be dealt with and not just pushed aside.

I say, forget artimous. Launch Starship. Refuel it. Launch crew in Falcon 9. Rendezvous and transfer to Starship. Conduct Moon mission. Return to earth orbit, dock with refueller, dock Dragon. Return crew to earth. Refuel Starship

So, why aren't they using Heat Shield Tiles on critical parts of the launch pad?

Totally broken audio when watching on KZbin-Roku. Auto translated into other language with no way to disable it. Translations do not have an option for English either. Had to switch over to my phone to watch.

KZbin's roll out of this might not be perfect. We're working to improve over KZbin's own work right now. Roku might want to update it's software as well.

Felix- easy on praising BO’s use of hydrogen because it burns to produce only water; they get it from a very dirty process from petrochemicals.

Good update. Thanks for fewer goofy pop up scenes. Keep working toward "0" to be truly professional.

Nah, we aren't going to see starship catch attempts until the second tower is capable of catching. It's impossible to catch both super heavy and ship in rapid succession on the same tower with the current design. Aside from the fact there's no reason to, given that most ships will need to go back to a payload integration facility. The obvious exception is, of course, tankers, but I doubt we'll see a ship return to flight with 0 refurbishment for a year or more, at least. Rapid reuse of the booster is the real key to this systems success. The ability to launch, catch the booster, roll another tanker in place, stack, and go again is key.

there is no need to catch in quick succession, you can just wait in orbit

It is still hard to believe that they caught the booster with the chopsticks 1st try.

I think you’re missing something here. They will start using these test flights, not as write offs, but as work. They will start lofting starlink either with flight 6 or 7. This program is very expensive, they’ll economise it very quickly. All lunar/Mars testing progression will start very soon for free off the back of this

starlinks wont go up on flight 7, will be at least flight 8 and they cant do it on flight 6 either, but starlink rn is still incredibly profitable and numbers dont stop going up
