i don't think WC understands what "red herring" means... you can't have a red herring ending, and every entry on this list is an example of a plot twist, not a red herring. an actual red herring would be, for example, rey's connection with luke's lightsaber. it implies that she has a familial connection to the skywalkers when in actuality (ignoring the stupid palpatine asspull) she's just a regular person with a strong connection to the force. hence why luke chucks it over his shoulder when they first meet.

Another decent red herring movie is A Perfect Getaway. If in that one scene they hadn't been talking about the whole red herring concept I truly wouldn't have figured things out until the reveal. But, I just knew because of that discussion that I needed to throw out anyone who the movie tried to imply was guilty and that lead me to the answer. Lol. 😂

First red herring in Psycho is the entire Janet Leigh stealing money plot, its set up as the big conflict at the start, and she as the protagonist, motel was just the stop on the way to run away...

A red herring comes from mystery writing when you imply a suspect is guilty, but it's actually someone else. This is a legitimate use of the term. It is more of a twist.

Memento is still a masterpiece, but it has one major plothole. If he has no short-term memory after being attacked, then how on earth does he REMEMBER that he will FORGET? He spends the entire movie telling ppl about his "condition," but there's no way he should remember he even has one.
@tal_the_great5 күн бұрын
Thats why his hand says "Remember Sammy Jenkins". Its what reminds him that he has this problem.
@KoolKeithProductions5 күн бұрын
@tal_the_great That's not it. First of all the story he "remembers" about Sammy isn't even true. He is the person who killed his wife by accident, not Sammy. 2nd of all, if the attack damaged his short term memory, then the last thing he should remember is the attack. In fact, when someone asks him what's the last thing he remembers, he says "my wife dying". That makes sense, because his brain got messed up before he learned that she survived, so he would never remember that. But then he should not be able to remember his memory issue either.
@gp29173 күн бұрын
It’s discipline. He mentions it in the movie. you can train yourself to remember certain things. He just chose to remember a lie instead of the truth.
@KoolKeithProductions3 күн бұрын
@gp2917 The brain doesn't work like that. Ppl with brain damage can't "choose" what to remember and what to forget. The only reason why he didn't get a tattoo or something saying that he found "John G", was because he WANTED to remember he finally got the guy who assaulted his wife and messed up his brain...but he didn't. IT faded just like everything else, so if he could choose what to remember, he certainly what have chosen to remember that much.

I know it's up to interpretation, but I think that Cobb was awake at the end of the film. In every other scene where he saw his kids, he didn't see their faces, but in the final scene he actually sees their faces, & they are wearing slightly different clothes compared to previous scenes. Additionally, someone once pointed out how Cobb actually has 2 ways to see if he's awake or not-his top & his wedding ring-& they explained that if you watch him he'll check both to know when he's awake.

I don't think any Nolan movies are up to interpretation, the mystery is usually down to bad editing, convoluted script and horrible sound design. If you can't hear dialogue it's not the problem of you not understanding the story, it's on whoever greenlit movies to release in that sorry state.

The only reason that the 6th sense was unpredictable was because it doesn't make any sense at all. If we could see most scenes 5 minutes before or after, it would show that nothing is logically consistent.

What? If we could see things not in the movie, the movie wouldn't look the same? Duh. Please watch Rashomon and learn media literacy. Every story has events that happen outside of what we see, that's how storytelling works.

@KasumiRINA yes, but every scene outside of the movie doesn't work at all, that's the problem. Malcolm teleporting around *should* have helped him notice that he's a ghost, or at the very least, that something was very wrong with the universe.

THE FORCE AWAKENS doesn't really belong here; it wasn't the movie but the posters that cheated by giving Hamill second billing. I suppose we should be glad you went all the way back to PSYCHO, but prominent red herrings predate it (and are almost a necessity for whodunnits; don't get me started): RASHOMON, LES DIABOLIQUES, THE SEARCHERS (and perhaps RED RIVER?), LETTER FROM AN UNKNOWN WOMAN. To some extent, the red herring is exemplified by last lines like 'And what has this to do with me, you ask? Nothing!' or 'Forget it, Jake, it's Chinatown'
@KasumiRINA6 күн бұрын
Everybody should watch Rashomon, it is a masterclass in focal points and media literacy. Not just for games, people keep saying that first FFVII reveal (Cloud not being there) is the real thing when BOTH VISIONS ARE FALSE. You see one closer to truth later. Anyone who seen Rashomon (or well, anything based on Agatha Christie), wouldn't make fast conclusions after just two versions of events.
