I was blindly very lucky going into "Abigail", as I'd not seen any trailer, nor read anything about it, mostly because I stupidly kept confusing it with "Annabelle", and thought it was another movie about the doll. Boy was I wrong.

I swear Abigail is getting absolutely unfairly hammered for revealing the premise of the movie. Lots of other movies also reveal their central premise in the trailer but don’t get this much blowback. From Dusk Till Dawn shows vampires in the trailer, T2 reveals Arnold is the good guy in the trailer, and the Sixth Sense has the famous “I see dead people” line in the trailer. All of those movies could have also kept more from the audience in the trailer. However, I don’t hear the complaints about those movies that I hear with Abigail. Also, I think the build up was important to Abigail because it introduced us to all the characters, and it set up different character dynamics that we’d see be payed off in the end. As I was watching the build up, I knew Abigail was the one starting to pick them off, however, I was entertained by the characters, and after it was over, I could go back and look at the different ideas they set up that mattered in the end.

First of all, EVERYONE hated that the trailers spoiled the Terminator's face turn when T2 came out. Second, the kid seeing dead people wasn't the twist in Sixth Sense.

Terminator 2 came out in 1991, the Sixth Sense came out in 1999 and Dusk Till Dawn came out in 1996, social media in the form it is seen today did not exist (facebook was founded in 04, Twitter in 06 and KZbin in 05) outside of Newspaper critics it wasn't as easy for people to lambast these things so people didn't bother, modern films come out in a climate of scoial media where it takes a few minuites and a keyboard to share your opinion, so everyone does.

The trailers did not ruin Abigail at all... Abigail Weir, Matilda, playing a ballerina vampire child is the sole reason i went to the cinema and when I was there I was on the edge of my seat excitedly watching the other characters work out what i know. FANTASTIC MOVIE!

Furiosa ought to be number one. Though, maybe not the marketing's fault. I'm seeing so many people saying that a lack of Mad Max is the problem. But no one cared that Tom Hardy was recast as Max in Fury Road, or that Furiosa took center stage. Why? Because the movie LOOKED ASTONISHING. By contrast, I saw the trailer for Furiosa, and everything looked like greenscreen. It was the lack of effort in the visual presentation that killed this film, and even if people didn't pick up on that when they watched the trailer, they knew on a gut level that this was not worth watching.

Even though I saw and liked (most of) the movie, You are correct. It looked like production was both rushed and heavily edited down at the same time. And I swear the beginning of the movie was written by AI because of how little thought was put into it.

The Marsh Kings Daughter has got to be on this. I went to the movies A LOT in 2022 and 2023, like 3-4 times a week, and I only saw a trailer for that movie ONE TIME. I thought it was actually a really entertaining movie, and deserved more hype. It had a terrible stint at the box office and it deserved better.

Cant watch trailers these days for most movies. Most egregious ive sen lately is “speak no evil” remake (crazy a remake is being made already but thats another complaint). The trailer ruins every twist and effed up plot point in the entire movie that is known for them, all of which impact the viewer hard. Watch the original and no trailers (if u want one of the most “feel bad movies” of all time… its miserable. But great)

My problem with Love Lies and bleeding trailer was putting Ed Harris front and center like he was actually going to play some big role he had about 45 seconds on camera and he was not menacing.

Whats funny about that MI mountain bike scene that they are talking about is that, when I went to see Avatar 2 in IMAX. right before the movie started playing they showed a bunch of clips of other movies of course. One of those clips was like a 5-10 minute behind the scenes featurette on the process of them doing that very scene. Literally. Im just waiting for Avatar 2 to start and they dedicate this entire behind the scenes, making of featurette to just that one scene for an ungodly amount of time. On top of all the trailers that featured it, you would have thought that that scene was the entire movie itself.

Eternals really should be in here. Since the trailer showed Ikaris talking to Ajex about The Emergence at her cabin. As such, when the whole team goes there to find her dead and says he's oblivious to what the Celestials had planned, it became obvious he killed her.

I saw Abigail trailer at the theatre and decided to see it; so I wasn’t surprised by her being a vampire. Almost forgot she was a vampire and wondered how they’d clue in the auidence. Did go see it again with a friend who hadn’t heard much about and didn’t know about the vampire aspect. Not sure how they would be able to market it without some spillage.

I convinced my partner to see Abigail with me, but pitched it without revealing the twist (and he'd managed to not see any marketing). It's fair to say he had a much better time with it, as going in blind made the vampire plot way more interesting and exciting. I still thought it was good, and enjoyed its campiness, but yeah- I really don't understand why they didn't bury the lead in the marketing..

The Art Deco posters for The Rocketeer were stylish, but to the average moviegoer they were downright confusing. Some people blame the Art Deco posters for the Rocketeer being a box office flop, even though the Rocketeer had a really unfortunate release date when it would be pummeled by at least two blockbusters.

Abigail is the latest worst example of how far trailer editing and marketing has fallen. A good trailer editor could have produced two minutes of set-up and gore/violence, without ruining a jaw-dropping mid-film plot development, that would have been enough to draw audiences in. The trailer reveal of 'aw, she's a little vampire', is fucking lazy. But everyone wants ALL the information before seeing the product/content nowadays, so whatever.

Before they even rolled cameras on Abigail they announced that Radio Silence were making a vampire movie. If they'd hidden it in the trailer I'd have still known what it was about and it's still, possibly, my favourite film of 2024 so far.

Me and my wife wanted to see Abigail. Then they spoiled the story in the trailer and we lost all interest in seeing it. Similar thing happened with kings man golden circle. How the ruined the fake out death from the first movie. That could have been a surprise as good as Vader telling Luke the truth.

I liked The Last Voyage of the Demeter. But I did know it was from the chapter in the book, so I can see how if you weren't familiar you'd be what's this about. Also, I really loved that picture of Abigail behind you. I had seen the trailer in the movies and thought this looks cool.

I think Kung Fu Panda 4 and especially Horizon were hurt by their marketing because the former only had one trailer and they didn't have a lot of TV spots but yet it did get money, whereas the latter flopped so bad it had less money in 10 days than Furiosa, which flopped as well, got in like 3 days.

Way too many musicals these days. Absolutly oversaturated market and it feels everthing becomes shoehorned into another musical only a tiny group of the audience asked for or even enjoyed. My interest in Joker2 sank to 0 after the announcement they choreographed and composed 15 musicals numbers for the movie as a arkham Musical... ... argyle wasn't bad,but it's true they advertised a Henry cavill movie that doesn't exist. MI:DR Part1 was very good

Madame web was a fun movie to watch. Its just another example of why i shouldnt listen to critics. Was it one of the best movies, or even great? No. Was it a fun movie? Yup. Glad it came to netflix and i decided to spend abit of time before going to bed to watch it. Ended up finishing it and enjoying it.

That's all well and good, but everyone I know who saw it said it was one of the worst movies they'd ever sat through. Look up the audience reviews on rotten tomatoes, it has a 57% on rotten tomatoes and a 3.9 on imdb. It may not be the worst movie ever made, but this was not critics ganging up on something, it was a bad movie.

The trailer didn't ruin Voyage of the Demeter, it was the fact that it was crap. Boring, absolutely no tension, (although that would explain why they didn't use the word Dracula in the title - when you know it's him you know how it's going to go), and it changes too much of the source material. I was so so excited for this - Dracula is my favourite book - but when they get important details so wrong in the opening scene, there's really not much hope. They would have been better off writing it as a straight horror story and dump the Dracula idea completely.
