One of the things that made John Carpenter’s Halloween so iconic was the fact that Michael Myers was an apparently normal boy from an apparently normal family, who just suddenly killed his older sister. No exposition. No explanation. No backstory to explain his killing as a result of trauma or abuse. Just, here is this young boy, around 10-11, who suddenly decided to kill his sister. It made the idea that he was just plain evil so much more terrifying. And Michael Myers much less sympathetic. Movies 4, 5, and Rob Zombie robbed us of that intense and imaginative fear. The sequels 4 & 5 did it by claiming he was cursed by a cult and had no choice. He was being used. Zombie’s version did it by creating a narrative that he grew up in an extremely toxic family household with an abusive father and a mentally unstable mother, as well as him being constantly bullied by his sister at home and his classmates at school. He then snapped and became evil. Leaving people to wonder “Gee, if his family live hadn’t been so horrible, would he have still been a killer?” And while there are many people who become killers after suffering severe abuse as a child, there are also people who never suffered abuse and were just born sociopaths or psychopaths. And while in real life they are equally terrifying, when it comes to fictional film and screen, the idea of not knowing which one it is (born or created), is far more frightening than knowing the definitive answer. Especially if that answer is that they became evil because others did evil and cruel things to them.
@Fools_Requiem3 күн бұрын
@themayhemofmadness7038 Nothing about the John Carpenter Mike Myers is realistic. Kids don't suddenly stab family members. If the kid were psychopathic, someone would have noticed. Kids are still every receptive, regardless of psychosis. They may lack empathy, but they'll still understand the difference between right and wrong if their parents did their jobs. John Carpenter's Myers is not a sociopath. He's the human incarnation of evil. Sociopaths don't magically survive things humans should die from. Human beings do not wander through people's homes and kill unsuspecting people while kids are running around trick-or-treating.

@mage1439 The difference is that it is considered cool by SW to bow at the altar of Timothy Zahn and think that he is more of a genius than George Lucas himself, whereas it is also cool online to hate Disney for being powerful, rich and successful by those who will never be any of those things, and who wish for Disney to become bankrupt as a victory to socialism. Timothy Zahn could have a criminal record and say that the earth is flat, and you SW fans would worship him. Also books never get the scrutiny that movies get, because books aren't as popular, so it isn't as satisfying as cutting a tall poppy like a movie. 2:19 Emperor Palpatine returns somehow According to the book and lore, he used a Sith ritual to protect his consciousness before death by transferring it to the Sith Homeworld Exegol where he suffered a lot while he cloned himself. and because the process was messy, there was a major delay in returning since the cloned bodies decayed quickly. It took a while to figure out a solution to it.

If the lore isn't in the movie then who gives a toss? Seriously the general audience shouldn't need to do homework in order to understand a film. Oh and that explanation is woeful! A Sith ritual that can transfer consciousness at the moment of death halfway across the galaxy. Please. And why would his clones look like he did after his encounter with Mace Windu? It's absolute nonsense by hacks trying to make sense of Abram's ridiculous decision to bring him back. And don't get me started on how bringing him completely destroyed Anakin Skywalker's entire story arc in the original movies (i.e. actual Star Wars). Didn't have any problems with the opening of Avengers, but Eternals? As the BBFC certification screen went to black, I said to myself "Just be true to Jack Kirby's vision, and we'll be fine, and you can set up mutants and a whole bunch of other-" And then we got the opening crawl, and a movie that compared very poorly to the original concept. It gets a pass because of the post-credits scene, and Patton Oswalt's epic rendition of PIP THE TROLL.

I absolutely loved Tenet. Never noticed an issue with the audio mix until people started talking about it. Maybe the audio mix was better in IMAX, which is where I saw it.

Nolan movie with sound issues? What a surprise.

I saw “The Avengers” on opening night and was very attuned to pop culture reactions at that time. I recall no one complaining about the opening scenes.

Tbf, how could anyone tell Rocky had brain damage. Stallone sounds like he has anyway.

I fell asleep watching Tenet twice. It made no sense, and the main actor couldn't act.

Rocky V is basically the real life tragedy of Mike Tyson; he does have permanent brain damage and he is broke af until he agreed to "fight", sacrificing everything he believes for survival (which I am absolutely not judging as I would have made the same decision if I was in his shoes).

Rocky V is no longer considered canon. "Rocky Balboa" is the canon follow on from "Rocky IV".

Dark Fate: I laughed and loved it. Ride of skywalker: If it works… don’t kill it, lol Halloween: After House of a 1000 corpses? I just avoid his films. Cruella: Anything going live action after a childhood favourite is avoided with prejudice. Avengers: You Shut Your Dirty Mouth!!! (hands you soap.) Final Destination 3: All death here is wanted and enjoyable. Rocky 5: There were 5 of these? The Eternals: I fall asleep to this every night… out in 5 minutes every time. Still don’t know how it ends. Tenet: Sound mix was awesome… especially the OST. Never had any problems understanding anything. Alone in the dark: What a train wreck. A train wreck slamming into the side of a mountain while a plane flies into it.

The Eternals was a great movie. However, it would have been better to precede the movie with smaller episodes on Disney + introducing the characters.

Can say that Avenger started on a low key.

Oh god, they turn John Connor into a freaking Terminator in Genesys. Nothing worse than that. Also, you completely struck out on the official explanation on the Palpatine thing - it's revealed in the novelization that he's a clone that Palpatine projected his essence into at the moment of his death. One of many he created over the years in the event he was killed. But the clones are flawed and cannot contain his essence and begin to decay over time - you can see this in the movie as the clone he is currently inhabiting is falling apart. One line of dialogue could have fixed this in the movie - weird that Abrams chose to ignore it.

As a huge Halloween fanatic, I quite liked Rob Zombie's Halloween. Also as a huge Halloween fanatic, I quite despised Rob Zombie's Halloween II.

Oddly I know what you mean about the beginning of Avengers, it was a little underwhelming on first watch, though, I've never heard anyone actually complain about it, and were expectations through the roof for Chloe Zhao directing The Eternals, not something I remember? For me Wakanda Forever should be in the list, when T'Challa dies of stupidity

"the Marvel cinematic universe wouldn't be what it is today" . . . a broken mess that has no real idea where it's going and has lost almost all sense of how to make a coherent story that isn't just a stepping stone to the next movie?

You knew Disney was just virtue signaling when Chloe Zhao got the gig to direct Eternals. An unexperienced female director at the helm of what was suppose to be an Avengers level film
