@trans80105 жыл бұрын
This comic was always in continuity. It was designed as a vehicle to retire Babs as Batgirl by DC and Alan needed a character to motivate Batman into action so Len Wein gave him Babs. DC didn't think the bronze age optimistic Congresswoman who moonlighted as a crimefighter made sense in this new Post Crisis, grunge and crime ridden Gotham City or its tortured avenger. DC certainly marketed this story as belonging in continuity, look at the trade ads. It was advertised as the Origin of the Joker in solicitations and the "definitive" Joker story in advertisements within the comics shipped during late 87-early 88. As for killing the Joker, that's not true either. Alan has flat out said its not true. The script pages that were publicly released also have no mention of Batman breaking the neck of Joker, or strangling him. The Dark Knight's hand placed on his shoulder. The lack of characters in the final panels is meant to illustrate passage of time. The police show up, take Joker into custody, and drive off, the remaining sounds is that of the falling rain. The death of Joker would negate the point of the story. The killing Joke is nothing more than a metaphor for Batman and Joker's twisted relationship, that they are destined to do the dance they do for eternity. Its really a commentary on comics and their refusal to execute their cash cows. You cannot kill the Joker because he's a fan beloved character, same with Batman and this is reflected within the story.
@davidsiqueira29965 жыл бұрын
Trans8010 I agree with you in the long run, but when the comic first came out dc didn’t state that it was in continuity, only after a while when the comic became well know dc was like “ oh yeah, it was always in continuity “ but then again I could be wrong and dc always wanted for it to be in continuity.. 🤷♂️
@trans80105 жыл бұрын
@@davidsiqueira2996 You are wrong. Plain and simple. The month this comic was released there was also a one shot that illustrated the retirement of Babs as Batgirl. Look for Batgirl Special 1988. This issue was published because Alan Moore was going to cripple Batgirl, and DC wanted to retire the character. When Jason Todd is killed you see Babs in a wheelchair and references to that story throughout the year of 1988. This book was canon at inception.

Nospam Spamisham, You haven't read A Killing Joke, have you? Because Batman doesn't sleep with Batgirl at all in that book. Also, Joker doesn't "gang rape" Batgirl after paralyzing her, he stripped her naked and took pictures of her to drive Gordon mad. He also doesn't rape Gordon, and nowhere in the book is it ever implied that he did. Hell, not even in the animated movie version of the book, which is really just two stories in one movie, since the first half of that film isn't even the Killing Joke, but instead its own story that has nothing to do with the source material, implied that Gordon was raped by Joker. And yes, you can say that the film version implied Joker raped Barbara, it was already denied by one of the producers of the film, Bruce Timm, that the scene people are using to say Joker raped Barbara, the scene with Batman interrogating some prostitutes, was meant to imply anything like that. And even if the person who wrote the film, which was not the author of the actual book but instead some guy named Brian Azzarello (Who has a weird fascination with making Joker a rapist). That fact alone means you can't say what is implied in the film is what happens in the comic.

@wrestlinganime4life2884 жыл бұрын
It's not about dark. When you start a cinematic universe you must have a clear vision of what the lore of this character is all about. The MCU took some inspiration from the ultimate comics but Feigie understood the Marvel lore very well. He had one specific vision that fits the characters. Marvel are human becoming icons well the MCU took nobody and made them A lister. The tune of each character varies as it should be. It does not make sense for Thor to be more grounded like Captain America. The DCEU didn't have any of this. Zack snyder vision was based on his own opinion on the genre. And that's why it failed.

The conclusion of the final battle in that series was both stunning and somewhat inevitable.// Also, this is the 1st time I've seen anyone suggest that Batman murdered the Joker in the final panels of The Killing Joke. I think that's a liberal interpretation of Alan Moore's conclusion.
@PharaohDom5 жыл бұрын
Le Sigh. The ending of Killing Joke is iconic. Not for the reasons posited here. Batman DOES NOT kill Joker in the end. People took Grant Morrison's interpretation of that scene and ran with it as canon. This is a poor decision on their part for two reasons. Most obviously being that Grant Morrison didn't write Killing Joke, Alan Moore did. His interpretation is therefore merely that, not an authorial edict. The second issue is that you can read the Killing Joke script and clearly see that's not what happened. Alan Moore's scripts are notoriously dense, detailed and very thorough. It in no way, shape, or form hints at Batman killing The Joker. It very purposefully leaves the figures in shadow and what happens ambiguous. Be that as it may thematically Morrison's interpretation doesn't jive with the themes of the story. The crux of the story is that Joker wants to prove one bad day can break anybody, even the best of men. In the end, after all he does to him he tells Batman to prove their way works. To bring him in by the book. And Bruce not only agrees, but agrees emphatically. For Morrison's interpretation to have any validity you have to literally ignore major plot points, dialog, and clear character motivations.

One I love. Alan Moores Superman. Where after killing Mr Myxiousplyx (no I will not find the correct spelling) superman depowers himself and walks of into the Antarctic wastes

you talk a lot about the things Moore "set in stone" with the killing joke but he very specifically tells the reader this may not even be Jokers origin just the one he thinks is interesting at the moment and it is completely up in the air as to what happens at the end

If I've said it once, I've said it a hundred times. At the end of "The Killing Joke", Batman absolutely DID NOT strangle Joker, they shared a dark and twisted laugh!!! That's my opinion anyway.

I don't get why people hate on new 52? I liked the art and is it the reason I started reading comics

I ask again, because I'm getting tired of it: Wasn't the point of Killing Joke to not actually know if Batman killed the Joker?! Oh I guess it's on Wikipedia right? Your only source?

I'm pretty sure that people started saying "whoa, I wonder if Batman kileld the Joker?" only after the 90s and a taste for ham-fisted deconstruction became the norm. But TKJ is pretty much in continuity, right? Barbara's injuries and all? And the Joker was shown to be alive at some point or other after TKJ, right? All evidence points to Batman not killing the Joker; it even takes some doing to misinterpret the art on the last page, where Batman is clearly gripping the Joker by the shoulders, not the neck.

@@kingbeauregard it only really started after Grant Morrison said it on Kevin Smith podcast. Never heard it before then and people were now fawning over his batman work. The killing joke was in continuity as the published the last Batgirl story to set up her getting crippled.
