I think the 2 biggest reasons games like these "fail" are 1. They take way too long to come out. Like who today cares about Beyond Good and Evil 2 today in 2024 who didn't already like it when the first game came out in 2003? and 2. The games change so much that they may as well be a new IP. If you played Sand of Time as your first PoP game, are you really wanting a 2d Metriodvania game for the series first new game in over a decade?

As a PoP fan AND a Metroidvania enthusiast, I would actually answer yes to #2. My problem is that Ubisoft has fucked up so many times since Sands Of Time that now I have a strict "no Ubisoft games policy" in place. Which is a shame because a Prince of Persia Metroidvania title actually sounded really exciting to me when I first heard about it. But I have my principles.

PoP is the PERFECT example. From dark and brooding to... whatever this rainbow unicorn sh!÷ is. Ubi is tone deaf to the existing audience in order to pursue this idea of a "modern audience".

My hot take is that corporate executives in the gaming industry are quick to write off a game as a failure (and I think it’s totally intentional) if it doesn’t sell say 2 million copies in the first month. They do this so they can use ‘creative’ (re: dishonest) accounting to justify underpaying or (just laying off) the developers, after a product is finished and released, while the execs pocket all the profits. A good game can have steady sales for months, ultimately more than making back its budget, but the powers that be don’t want to talk about that, and the gaming media is too often complicit in going along with this dishonest narrative.

The trouble with waiting 10-20 years to make a new game in a series is that your primary fanbase grows up. People who loved your games now have multiple jobs, spouses, pets, kids, and/or a home to care for. They just don’t have the time or money to play new (especially full priced) title. They don’t want to spend two weeks of their kid’s lunch money on a game that they can only play for an hour on Saturday nights after the kids go to bed especially if that’s the only real time they can spend with their spouse. Young players don’t want to play them when they are marketed as sequels to games they’ve never heard of and there are 100 games their favorite streamers and all their friends are already playing. The game studios write them off as failures but it’s the studio’s failure.

Even less than that to be frank. More and more AAA games are slashing their prices after only 6 to 8 weeks, sometimes even less than that. Unless you're a content creator, or someone else who really needs that day one experience, there's really not a point to shelling out day one anymore. Also frankly there's a boat load of games I've been hyped about and then day one it turns out there's a *huge* turn off for me to actually invest in them.
@RippahRooJizah
@RippahRooJizah 4 ай бұрын
@@TheKgr320 Generally speaking if it's a game I believe in, I'll pay full price for it (and this has very rarely turned out poorly for me). Plus, some games would benefit an earlier purchase. One example, don't be the guy who decides to wait a year before buying a fighting game on sale, then going online and getting mad that the people online seem to, oddly enough... know how to play the game. Another example, spoiler risks, because sometimes you have to be extra careful to not get spoiled by a game on accident just looking around on YT. Then there's also the preorder stuff. I know a lot of people say to never preorder, and all I can say is I've seemed to have had far better experiences than most pertaining to preorders.
@duhmzdaih
@duhmzdaih 4 ай бұрын
@@RippahRooJizah Well, about the fighting games, you can be the guy that waits a year before buying and then doesn't get mad at something that's easy to expect. Just take your time to learn the game before going online. When it comes to content, most fighting games nowadays are A JOKE in day one in comparison to the classic titles. Besides, characters are nerfed, patched, rebalanced, etc. anyway all the time in online games. About spoilers, I think this only has happened to me once, being spoiled on accident, so it's not a big deal.

I will give you a hint at to why Viewtiful Joe 2 might have sold abismally. There was a Playstation Underground disc released with a demo of The Getaway as it's primary game of interest. However, among those demos featured was none other than, you guessed it, Viewtiful Joe 2. Now, at the time, I fell victim to a bug on the demo disc that was embedded in the Viewtiful Joe 2 game demos file. What it did was atrocious and it still makes me sick to this day. The bug was that if you played the demo of VJ2, it would delete your ENTIRE memory card(s) save data that was inserted into your PS2. I was notified of this bug after a couple of weeks by playstation via mail at the time. Way after it was too late and i was left wondering what the hell happened. So needless to say, even though it was not VJ2s fault per say, it left a bad taste in my mouth and I'm sure a lot of other people's at the time as well.

@@maeburekaiser the dreamcast was better at rendering and easier to develop for, it had the better controller (the xbox controller is based on the dreamcast controller btw), the first online features in a console, and a lot more additional hardware than the ps2. As someone who completed lost crown and was very impressed, it was definitely overpriced. The metroidvania market just isnt at the point where you can charge $40 or $50 at launch. The only way a dev can get away with charging full price for a 2D metroidvania is if the first word in it's name is "Metroid". Frankly though for barely a few quid a pop I find the Ori games more appealing, that said I'm not big on 2D platformers in general, that was most of what we had in the 8bit era I grew up in so I got it out of my system many moons and cycles ago. I do love the first 2 Metroid Prime games though.

A recent game to add to this list is the Dead Space Remake. Everybody was so hyped when it was announced (supposedly), followed every dev blog & stream, community events, etc. But it only sold 2M copies. It was expected to sell 5M. Granted, it wasn't a huge failure due to the smaller budget, but it's a perfect example of how nostalgia has its limits. Not only is the original Dead Space (2008) still playable, but the target audience for the remake has moved on/aged out of gaming. Younger gamers don't care about DS, or other aging IPs, and the lack of sales proved this.

Outriders is an example of a game that felt like it did everything right, and still came up short. It felt like it had everything, addressed every concern, and answered every community question properly. Numerous Q&As, and they always said the right thing. If people wanted a feature or mechanic, it was probably in the game. Numerous modes and settings to address any gameplay concerns. Yet the game just did not sell well. The shooting and everything was probably a bit mid, or it didnt execute the gameplay loop to peoples satisfaction, or maybe it was too niche for what they were expecting in the mainstream when compared to other shooters. But it felt like everything else they did right, and if you looked at reception up to release, people couldnt wait. Then the game came out and it didnt pan out so well.

Honestly, I have an answer for every one of those games. But the ones that stood out: Chrono Cross: I rented it and frankly hated the changes they made, so I never bought. FF 7 remake: Avoided. I didn't enjoy FF7 to the extent everyone else seemed to, and it felt overhyped to me, so pass. Prince of Persia: I want to get it, but on PC it went exclusive to Epic. Hard pass until it releases elsewhere on PC (Which is my gaming console of choice these days, given up on consoles). Mirror's Edge sequel? Sure, but only if it ditched combat... oh, they doubled down on gun-play? Hard pass.

The games industry makes this mistake over and over. If a game goes into overdrive everyone tries to replicate it. Open World, battle royale, and now souls likes. There's no real creativity anymore, up to the 360/PS3 era there was a tonne of experimental stuff coming out constantly but now everything has to fit in whatever games just sold well. Look at HiFi Rush, good innovative game, studio gone. In the past platform owners didn't mind loss leaders because the diversity drives other sales. Now only Nintendo is happy to finance "lesser" titles like the exclusive Platinum games on their system, they don't make any money on them but know that their presence drives wider sales. Take all the niche titles off Switch and do you think they would of sold so many devices, extra controllers etc, insane numbers of MK8, Zelda, Mario etc? I don't think so, I could be wrong but I really believe that it's the software that drives platform sales that then drives more software sales. Not every game needs to take 5+ years to produce running graphics that try to make your hardware catch on fire, that's the mistake the industry is making and it has ruined the PS5 and Series era already despite them both being very capable platforms for the money. BTW I've put about 1300 hours in 100% completing Civ6 at the hardest difficulty on PC, not one single second on multiplayer, not interested.

Some of these did it to themselves. PoP dropping as a Metroidvania at full price was a huge gamble, one that doesn't seem to be paying off. Chrono Cross wasn't billed as a Chrono Trigger sequel, in fact the only indication it may be as much was it's name. It also got some flack for how the games titular mechanic (the Chrono Cross) worked and how poorly implemented the mechanic was. FF7 Rebirth got what it deserved. SE dangled people for years with the promise of FF7 remade from the ground up with Advent Children visual assets. What they delivered was a 3rd person hack'n'slash hybrid full of retcons and a ton of filler content. With the added bonus of SE milking this cow for all its worth by breaking the remake into chapters, all full priced titles, and spread out over several years. Even people who liked what they did with FF7R are waiting for the project to be complete before they keep throwing money at it.

To be honest it’s mixed. The leveling itself is super easy especially in a few spots… the catch comes down to 2 things. 1) You cannot get the full roster of characters in one play through. There is an A and B route in the game that is pure RNG from what I remember,… and there are certain characters that are either or. 2) Some of the characters are really unbalanced compared to others (like in Suikoden) so they can be a pain to level in certain areas.. because they suck (in combat, for some reason with the exception of 3 characters like Mojo most of the really cool characters were the worst in combat.)

The problem with FF7 remake/rebirth isn't the story, maybe it plays a small part but the fact is that their biggest market(Japan) isn't as invested in the ps5 as the US so of course they would lose money making it a only ps5 game.
@hosswik
@hosswik 3 ай бұрын
@WhitebeardisKing Them limiting it to PS5 did limit sells and some people were upset about the story…. But if you look at the reviews most of the complaints were about the lackluster combat. Same thing happened with FF16, Action RPG’s can, and often are good… but they missed the mark with both FF7R games and FF16, by opting for watered down uninspired gameplay instead of playing it safe and using the traditional system. This is in my opinion, the primary reason why most fans are waiting for it to have a good sale before buying.
@WhitebeardisKing

@hosswik the biggest market for final fantasy is Japan and the fact they made both of the new games ps5 only destroyed the sells, personally I loved ff16 but I love most of the ff games except 9, sure the gameplay can kinda get repeative but what game doesn't? I mean I'd wager that alot of ff players also play things like cod or battlefield or halo.

I think folks didn't buy the second Final Fantasy 7 remake game because they took a game that was perfect as one game and well told and then gave it The Hobbit (or other popular book turned movie that went multipart) treatment and blew it up into a multigame of one game. What's better than paying $60/$70 to get the remade version of FFVII? Paying three times to get the same basic story.

Chrono Cross deserves the loss. It's a prime example of pumping resources into areas that don't make sense(only 5 or 6 of the 45 playable characters are in any way important to the overall story) and using the good reputation of another title to get more anticipation and praise than actually deserved. The only connection between the 2 games was a late-game reveal that nothing seemed to be working towards, so it came entirely out of left field. People are still clamoring for a proper sequel to Chrono Trigger because Chrono Cross wasn't one.

Not to mention canonically the kingdom of Marle and Chrono was overthrown by Dalton and then wibbley-wobbly timey-wimey stuff erased everything you did in Chrono Trigger. I absolutely HATE it when sequels do things like that, but it was the only way the could stick 'Chrono' into the title and make Cross 'fit' with the other game, since it wasn't originally designed to be a sequel to Trigger.

Yeah as somebody who was the prime demographic back then and LOVED Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross was a huge letdown. I definitely didn't give it a fair chance because I wanted more Chrono Trigger and instead got... something completely unrelated. The links to CT they shoe-horned in there don't count. If they had given it a different name and let it be it's own story/franchise I probably would have loved it off the bat. Instead it took me years to get past the sequel let-down to enjoy CC for what it is. The fact that I'm still a little salty about this 25 years later should say it all lol.

Adding in that I carry over nothing to the next game, regardless of unlockables from previous installments of the series, it soon became a game I want but not really will ever need. I think for FF7 Rebirth it's far more about what they are doing with the story and how they absolutely milked the first one to the point where the cow was clearly dead, and yet they were like "No, one more meaningless fetch quest...just one more!" That game, while good, was clearly much too short and much too bloated at the same time. When half of your game's runtime is cut scenes and side quests, you did something wrong. Especially with FF7. I liked it well enough, but it didn't blow me away. I expected more from a remake of one of the greatest RPGs ever made. I don't love the combat system, either. With the amount of battles in the game, I feel like they should have had some form of AI setting for you to use a default. Kind of like Dragon Age when it was released 14 years ago? I know some people liked it, some didn't, but for me the combat felt way too time consuming and I don't like micro managing every fight. They also spread these out too much. People lose interest after a period of time now. If the first was better then it would have had more of a chance, but it is what it is. I finished the first and it just was not a satisfying conclusion and didn't hype me up to wait almost four years for the next one. I'm sure quite a few felt that way and will hold off for a sale.

In regards to Crono Trigger; what exactly were European fans waiting for? We didn't get to play the original Crono Trigger legally until it was finally released as a part of the virtual console in 2011, almost a decade after Crono Cross came out. Unless you were a hardcore gamer that had the money to buy import, or a pirate, there was little chance you had even heard of the title, let alone played it. I only played it because, well, Y'arr, I guess. Furthermore, Crono Cross couldn't be more different if it tried. Battles didn't take place in the overworld, but instead in a different map (like Final Fantasy basically), Akira Toriyama didn't do the art, turn based battles were about this weird stamina management system and comboing (so that the accuracy on heavier attacks would go up) as well as this strange magic slotting thing. Dual and triple techs were almost non-existent (and felt like they were added because, CRAP! This was supposed to be a Crono Trigger sequel!) and due to the magic slot system, the only unique skills each character had were a number of special attacks (2 or 3 or so per character). Literally the only thing similar to Crono Trigger was that this game was... turn based. That's it. Collecting characters was pretty nifty, certainly, but not something I would associate with Crono Trigger. Progression also felt watered down, because whereas Crono Trigger had no less than 5 intrinsically linked time periods (6 if we include the final boss time period), Crono Cross had only one alternate dimension. While the concept of dimensions was neat, It just didn't have the same depth as Crono Trigger in that sense. The only things that made it feel a bit like Crono Trigger was the soundtrack, as well as that the story did link to Crono Trigger, even if the final twist/climax was done quite poorly (blonde(!?) Scala that needs to be defeated by the power of song? Why?) and the story had a fair share of plot-holes that make no sense or plot threads that go nowhere. Crono cross was a good game, but let's not fool ourselves into thinking it was this faithful follow-up to Crono Trigger and that it failed because, shucks, timing, because it wasn't. For someone who played Crono Trigger, Crono Cross was like a whiplash. Like biting into a fruit thinking it was a banana, only to find out it was in fact a lemon.

@@CookiePieMonster not to mention that fans asked just for some graphic and gameplay upgrades, not for that fan-fiction like mumbo jumbo. But hyper realistic graphics where more than enough to be gaslighted into that clear cash trap. Glad to hear some people finally waking up

@@toongrowner1 Never fell for it to begin with. I got friends that did and was like "Omg it's so good" all I retorted was, "And what about disc two? Three and four? Oh, they don't exist? Funny that 😐"

I think rebirths problem 100% is that it currently is ps5 exclusive. I played remake on ps4 and I'm sure most others did to, not including additional playthroughs. So being locked to a console that has only been easy to get your hands on as of like a year ago ofc it was gonna sell less. Companies set way to high of bars.

3:44 Viewtiful Joe 2’s downfall that wasn’t mentioned was the console exclusive playable Dante. Sony once again splitting a fan base and made a lot of fans not even bother buying or playing on GC since they weren’t getting the full experience.

Rebirth will probably rebound once it hits PC, but one issue was the idea that buying the first game would give you access to all subsequent games. They put that into the aether, but decided not to follow through.

Jeezus... so many good games. Both Viewtiful Joe's were amazing! Dawn of Dreams wasnt what I was expecting from an Onimusha game but it was still fun. Max Payne 2 was HIGHLY underrated; preferring it over the first. And Chrono Cross is... its... its freaking Chrono Cross!!!

Didn't know Max Payne 2 sold poorly. Still my favorite game in the Max Payne series and every friend I got to try it at my house bought it soon after.

FF7 Rebirth sold half as many copies because it was a PS5 exclusive, so all those people who own the PS4 couldn't buy the sequel. Having 120 million PS4 consoles VS 50 million PS5 makes a big difference on who can buy the game.

FF7 Rebirth had tons of problems. Number one was it came after an underwhelming remake that changed the story of a beloved game to "subvert expectations" which we were told would have three parts. The trouble was Remake came out on the PS4 and PS5 was announced shortly after. That made consumers worried that the next part would not be released on PS4 which came true when the DLC for Remake was only on the PS5. In other words, it shut out consumers who did not have the means to buy another expensive console. Number two is the changes made to the game were so significant that it made older fans less eager to consume ita content, which is why the DLC sold poorly and why Rebirth sold poorly. Because it's not a remake, it's a reimagining. It's like adapting your favourite novel but taking out this part, changing this other part, making this other character appear way sooner taking away all the surprise and shock. It doesn't work, does it? Doesn't help that the combat system is a shambles, trying to emulate FF15 even though it was panned. The fact you can't even use summons whenever anymore just makes the game less fun. Just a few reasons why I won't touch Rebirth for a while.

FF7:Rebirth also partly sold poorly because it is a PS5 exclusive. PS5 availability was really low for the first few years of its life and lot of people are still rocking a PS4 in their living room.

Max Payne 2 came out about 6 months after Enter the Matrix. I think given the similarities in the mechanics. Slow mo jumping through the air & how big the matrix films were it’s probably why MP2 flopped

It was also a super short game, like 4-5 hours long. + Personally at least didn't like how simplified the story was or playing aa Mona Sucks.

Chono Cross was great. I loved it and it's connection to Chrono Trigger. Chono Cross managed to be beautiful with great 3d and some 2d backgrounds that looked like paintings. Music was also great. I remember playing it with a dictionary to translate because I didn't understand English very well. It was a little hard since some characters had accents or just spoke weirdly😅

well to the defense of the prince of Persia game i still want to buy it, and play it.. but when other finacle obligations have to come 1st some things like the game must be pushed to the back burner. plus the only time i really buy anymore is from October - December when i have my extra cash saved up, and can rely on sales to help me get all said games.

POP - one of the biggest problems is that you had to use the Ubisoft platform to play it and many of us don't want to use proprietary platforms for every game. Pretty much has to be on Steam if it's for PC.

The sad fact is that it pretty much HAS to be on Steam because the other are just plain awful to navigate or utilize. Gabe may suck, but Valve has stayed on course in trying to keep their digital storefront usable and friendly. When you consider the competition on those fronts, you would think that companies that make ludicrous amounts of income on Engine licensing fees, exclusivity contracts, and a single game so stuffed with microtransactions and outside advertising (which also generates income) could at least put some effort in to make something that is better, well, when they don't they just come off like their player base - a bunch of whiny angry children who want to throw a fit when they don't get their way
