For me it was Pulp at the Sheffield arena in 2012. As a person of Sheffield who had grown up listening to Pulp with no real ability to see them live after their breakup, it was pretty life affirming. We get to the arena and on the way in everyone attending the gig was given a Christmas card from the band with a code and promise of a Christmas present later that month, we then get properly in the arena and instead of a support act, they are playing some of the bands own home movies that they had made back in the day. Then the gig begins with Do You Remember The First Time, and the gig rolls on with a brilliant career spanning set list of great music. The gig finishes with White Christmas and we all go home feeling as though we had witnessed something magnificent. A few weeks later, Christmas rolls around and using the code on the Christmas card on Pulp's website it becomes evident that the band had recorded a song that had only made the demo stages before as one last hit of Pulp brilliance and everyone who had attended the gig got the song on timed exclusivity free of charge as a download. It's a bit of a controversial thing to say, but after seeing The Arctic Monkeys drift away from being a band from my home city to becoming the band that Alex Turner sang about on Fake Tales Of San Francisco, getting Pulp back in this manner, even on a temporary basis was very special.

That's the best description of a Rammstein show I've ever heard! Did not see the big 4 shows, but I've seen all the big 4 guys a few times. My best show was as close as you can get though. Clash of the Titans 1991, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax with the Alice in Chains opening. Back when Layne was still with us. Megadeth was out for Rust in Peace, Slayer for Seasons and Persistence of Time for Anthrax, still some of my favorite albums

In 2003 I saw James Brown headline the Friday of a music festival. At the start of the show a member of his entourage walks up to the mic. He says"James doesn't think you are ready for him so he sent me out to warm you up". The band then started playing and this guy just started dancing around for about 10 minutes. James Brown then takes the stage and absolutely killed it for the next hour and a half. Start a show like that, you have to bring it. The godfather of soul certainly brought it that night.

Rage Against the Machine. Can't remember the year, but they headlined the Big Day Out festival, and was after they broke up and reformed, so was already in the place where I never thought I'd get to see them live. (I'm in Australia, and they didn't tour here often) But what made it beyond epic was actually when the power went out to the whole venue during Testify - they made it maybe 45 seconds in, and it went dark, and the music cut out - but although they looked confused for a few seconds, the crowd just kept on singing, and when they realised the whole arena was carrying the song, Zack sort of lead us from the front, Tom and Tim clapped us, and Brad drummed anyway, despite no amplification. It was glorious. Power was restored before the song finished, but they didn't pick up and play, but let us finish their song.

Erm, Adam, modern Muse shows are absolutely CRUSHING. I don't know where you get these ideas from. Right, lessee... can't do ONE single show, I feel that's impossible, so a top 10 maybe? Not ranked btw... more in chronological order. 10- Nirvana, Belfast Limelight, 1994. CHAOS. Kurt Cobain mighty pissed off. Weeks later he was dead. Brings up all sorts of emotions still. 😟 9- Entombed, Neurosis + Breach (!!), Belfast Limelight, 1998. Sweltery, sweaty mess. Never heard of Breach before this show... WHAT an eyeopener! Bassist looked like he wanted to murder the entire crowd. Neurosis had just released "Through Silver In Blood", so teenage me got treated to fresh cuts off it. Then Entombed hit the stage and levelled the place. 😁🤘 8- Emperor, Wacken Open Air, 2006- I honestly never thought I'd see them again, and was stoked for this. Suffered through the awful atrocity that is Whitesnake to get a good spot. And then they appeared... JUST as the Sun disappeared under the horizon. Amazing, and I finally got to hear a song off "Prometheus" live- my FAVE track. It was like Destiny. 7- Porcupine Tree + Engineers, Apollo Theatre, London, 2009. WAOW. PT were just... one of the GOAT's. And this 'special' show was the live debut of "The Incident", so we got 2 sets... firstly Disc 1 of The Incident in it's entirety, and then a set of 'classics'. Heaven. Utter fucking heaven. 6- Dream Theater, Opeth, UneXpecT+ Bigelf; "Progressive Nation" Tour, London, Wembley Arena, 2009. The very next night after Porcupine Tree! What really needs to be said about this? 2 of the best bands everrrr, and 1 of the most underrated musical acts in History. And a jolly good fun opening band! 😆 5- Primus "Primus & The Chocolate Factory" show, Manchester Apollo, 2015... OH MY FUCKING GAIA. I nearly had an embolism when I heard Primus were bringing the "Chocolate Factory" show to the UK!! THREE sets- a Primus classics with the 3 of 'em, then the Chocolate Factory show, complete with costumes, umbrellas full of lightning, giant candy canes, and Oompa Loompas with giant heads. Un-fucking-real. Then a 3rd short set with the 5 of 'em. And I was on Mescaline. 😂 4- Muse, "Drones" Tour, Belfast Odyssey, 2016. MY word. Adam Clery, I say this modestly. Me and a friend got seated tickets for this, and I was experiencing a bit of what you were talking about; "meeeh, won't be as good as the old oikey days". But, I put my scepticism aside, went to the show, and dropped some acid. Muse then proceeded... to slice my hairy arse off me, gift-wrap it, and hand it back to me. It was FAR BEYOND LETHAL. Song choices were spot-on, sound was crushing, stage show unreal. And I don't give those compliments lightly; I think Muse might be even more lethal than they've ever been. I was in tears (of joy) by the end.😎 4- Thundercat, Dublin Vicar St, 2016. My choice for the shit-hottest 'new' pop star. Blows all contemporary acts outta the water. SCINTILLATING live. Plays as a 'jazz-style' trio with a drummer and keyboardist live. Reworks his very-technical songs on the spot... like it's nothing. PLEASE let him be the commercial antidote to all the bollocks in the world! He deserves it. 2 George Clinton & Parliament- Funkadelic, Dublin Vicar St., 2016... I trundled down to this with some pals, thinkin' "George basically is Black Musical Jesus, but very old now, I'm sure it'll be good craic anyways" ... and, just like with Muse, I got my arse handed to me, whilst being bitch-slapped with a fresh salmon. I say to you, people, and I don't say this lightly... Parliament-Funkadelic MIGHT be the greatest live musical act in HISTORY. I can't really say for sure, as a lot of 'legendary' acts I haven't seen, but George's 38- legged phucking phreak machine will OWN you live. I dare ya's to go see'em. 🤘 1- Roger Waters, "Us And Them" Tour, Dublin 3Arena, 2018. What the fuck can I really say about this? It's Roger Freakin' Waters. His live shows are the stuff of LEGEND. He plays Pink Floyd songs... live. In fact, he basically played all of that wee album called "Dark Side Of The Moon". I was on acid... again. He thoroughly Trolled me with his Intro. Planets aligned. For 2 1/2 hours, all the malice went out of the world. I'll prob never see Floyd live. This is prob the next best thing. An asexual orgasm in concert form. Phew! Can ya tell I really like music? 🤣

Best gig I ever went to was to see Mindless Self Indulgence at the Electric Factory in Philly. I don't remember who the opening band was but they were surprisingly good and when MSI finally took the stage is was super high energy for almost three straight hours. They ended up playing WAY longer than anyone expected and kept engaging with the audience. But the best part was they started dropping new songs on the audience from the then unannounced "if..." album which is one of the best albums they've ever done. So glad I was at that show.

Bruce Springsteen at Bramall Lane 1988 and Lynyrd Skynyrd London Town & Country Club 1992 Bruce doing what he does best 3 1/2 hours of pure Rock N Roll and still doing cartwheels across the stage at the end. LS was a band I never thought I would see live. This was when most of the pre crash members were in the band. They played all the great songs included a huge surprise for me & my mate, Ballad of Curtis Loew. And the entire crowd sang it as loudly as Freebird. Honerable mentions, Queens last gig at Knebworth, Tom Petty & Stevie Nicks at Hyde Park, Quo at the Hamster in '84 when the broke curfew and jammed for an extra 45 minutes.

It was 1983 and I was 18 living in Toronto. The ARMS tour was a series of concerts put together in support of Ronnie Lane who had MS. The closest stop on the tour to Toronto was New York City at MSG. I wanted to see Jimmy Page. There was a bus tour going to the show and I convinced my folks to let me go. I got the cash together, booked my seat on the bus. It was an adventure start to finish. The show itself wasn't the best I ever saw but the adventure getting to the show and during it was amazing. It was the first time I was on my own having to make my own decisions. Everything from drunk & high people on the bus. Getting to the hotel and dealing with having to figure out a way to get to MSG. Being in MSG itself and finding out what happens when you try to get down to stage side when security discovers you. Getting high my real first time. After the show relying on someone in our group who swears they know the way back to the hotel and getting lost in New York at midnight. We realized our guide was lost and we small group of stoned Canadians thought we were going to be murdered as we had no idea where we were. Getting back to the hotel and the person I was sharing the room with was no where to be found and I had the only room key so I actually slept with the room door unlocked as I didn't want her to wake me up. To finally trying to get back into Canada when going through the border. Back in 1983 booze was cheap in the US and you could get these ridiculous large bottles. There was a liquor store just a few miles before the border. Everyone on the bus was hiding booze and we were told by the bus guide was just be cool, answer the guards' questions straight and they will let us through. Screw with them and the bus will get pulled for a search and no one wanted that. The girl I was sharing the room with was so stewed out of her mind she couldn't say her own name when the guard asked her. Literally you could hear a pin drop as we all held our breathe praying that this stoned out girl would just say her name. When she did and the guards told us we were all cleared to cross we waited till we were back in Canada before we all cheered. The ARMS show itself may be a memory now and damn Jimmy Page was wonderful to see but the whole thing of getting to and from the show makes it the best.

Anthrax in '97 on the 'Stomp 442' tour. Newcastle, Australia. An insane night. John Bush nearly got into a fight with the bouncers for being rough with the fans, telling them "Hey, man, this isn't Guns n' Roses!" Frankie Bello fell off the stage at one point. The band walked offstage and Scott Ian came out to the mic and told the crowd "This is the craziest show we've played since Jersey in '82'. They then came back out and proceeded to take the roof of the place. What a night. What a band. I've seen other great. Pantera in '94 being a particular highlight. I was a 17. I caught one of Rex's picks.

Mine is Linkin Park, July 6th 2017 in Birmingham, travelled on a bus up to Birmingham from Cardiff with 3 of my closest friends to see them live, absolutely brilliant show made even more potent since it was the last show Chester ever played before his death, it makes me really sad to think about now as it’s so weird to me to think about what Chester must have felt on that day but it doesn’t change how good that gig was. Man, there's so many to choose from. Brian Wilson on his "Smile" tour back in 2004 or 2005. The Cure in the mid-1990s, maybe 1996, in Portland. Towards the end of the show they started to play some of their oldest songs and the audience went nuts, which surprised Robert Smith and the band, to which they responded with an energy to match ours.

One of the best gigs was also Rammstein (with Apocalypica supporting who were also great), fantastic stage show, incredible pyrotechnics and stupidly tight musically. Gig I was most hyped for was the Dresden Dolls in London last year which I'd been waiting like 16 years for and it didn't disappoint. Through the mosh he went and got put up on stage. He became know at the concert as Auckland Pete. Disturbed ordered us all to chant "Auckland Pete" for the rest of the show.. which we all did. Another great show was in 2005 when I saw Slipknot for the first time. It was right after Vol. 3(The Subliminal Verses), and I was right up front, for about a minute, because the crowd moved so much that you couldn’t stay in one place if you’re 150 lbs. Corey came out during Unearths set wearing only his mask and a sock that wasn’t on his foot. If you pause Voliminal at the right time you can faintly see me at that show.

These band names are probably not gonna ring a bell with anyone not from the metal scene, but in 1999 I was at my first metal concert. The audience was 300 people, only about 30 of which stayed for the headliner. Today, each of the four bands playing that night could fill an arena on their own: Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquillity, Children Of Bodom and In Flames. I did not care much for the two opening bands, but Children Of Bodom kicked major ass ("Hatebreeder" was out at the time, so it was COB before they became awful), and In Flames seemed really grateful for the four people (including me) who were still banging and moshing in front of the stage while most people had already gone home.

For me it was Simple Plan in 2005, I was 8 years old and my mum took me for my birthday. It's still one of the best concerts I've ever been to, maybe it was because of how young I was, but still, it was amazing. Also, All-American Rejects and Kisschasy (great Australian band) were the openers, and AAR more or less introduced me to swearing

Dio, live in Istanbul 2003. I didn't even go to watch Dio, who was headlining, but to see my favourite band at the time, Rotting Christ, who turned out to be a rather disappointing affair (I watched them again many years later and they more than made up for it). I was living in Lebanon at the time, so I took a long-ass bus ride through Syria and across Turkey, stayed in a dingy hotel, just to be able to see Rotting Christ, as well as the other two bands on the bill, Krisiun and Kreator, and wasn't at all looking forward to Dio. But man, did Ronnie James Dio rock that field! I walked away a rather happy young man, and suddenly my hotel didn't even feel so crappy anymore, and the bus ride back to Lebanon the next day didn't feel so punishingly long either... Shout-outs also go to my first three gigs after I'd moved to France: Depeche Mode, Punish Yourself and Deströyer 666, all of them in February 2006. Depeche had these three gigantic screens in the back showing what I can only describe as a psychedelic film noir, that only tangentially related to the songs being played, but looked artsy as heck. Punish Yourself was probably the most insane gig I'd been to, and at some point I found myself standing right next to a couple seemingly having sex right in the middle of the crowd. And Deströyer were, and still are, by far, the most bad-ass Black Metal band I have ever seen live; I always find it weird when bands thank the audience after singing a song about destruction and evil, and Deströyer did none of that; they'd just finish a song, no small talk, move right to the next one, each song heavier than the one before.

My three favorite gigs I've seen are Alice Cooper's Constrictor (1986), Ozzy Osbourne's Ultimate Sin (1986), btw Metallica was the opening act, and AC/DC's For Those About To Rock (We Salute You) (1981ish, I don't quite recall the actual year I saw it).

The two best 'gigs' I've ever been to are: 1. Lollapalooza 1996 ('Columbus,' OH): Metallica, Sound Garden, The Ramones, Rancid, Shaolin Monks, Psychotica (meh), and the 'guest band' was Violent Femmes - Notable moments: (a) sitting in the shade for the guest band, and my group of friends discovering the awesomeness of Violent Femmes, by accident (b) ~Sound Garden opens up with 'Spoonman'~ My buddy and I look around, and then at each other and ask (simultaneously) "Where is the mosh pit? ... the mosh pit then materialized ON US... (c) later in the Sound Garden set, I heard my buddy Bill shout my name in a way that sounded like he was trailing off, at which point I turned around and saw the soles of his tennis shoes (trainers for you U.K. folks...I think...I read Harry Potter a lot...) (d) My buddy and I fight our way to the front fence (oh year, didn't I mention....this particular gig took place at a venue that must have been inspired by Woodstock) for Metallica....pretty much their entire set taking place 4ft away, with the stage just above eye level, with several dozen fans pushing us against the front fence was phucking awesome.... (e) specifically memorably moment from Metallica's set.... feeling the heat off the stage for the pyrotechnics for 'One' (f) I knew the Ramones, but didn't develop an appreciation of their catalog until years later. Though, the pace of their show pretty much blew my mind. Their set consisted of smaller 4-5 song sets, with short 'crowd talks' in between each. The only break between songs in the smaller sets was for Joey to say "1-2-3-4." I am so glad I got to see them on their last tour. 2. I saw Chevelle, Dope, Powerman 5000, and Static-X at a small Columbus, OH venue in 1999, I think. - Dope was horrible IMO....or, at least, they're generally not my cup of tea... - At that time, I had NO IDEA who Chevelle was, but one of my favorite songs (at the time) was "Point #1" from them. One local radio station, I think the first non-DJ-computer-generated stations in Columbus. The station never gave pre-sells, or post-sells, so unless you knew the artist independently, you didn't know...because Google wasn't really invented yet, so simple web searches bands via lyrics weren't exactly there yet. So, Chevelle's last song was "Point #1" and I went phucking balistic, because I loved the song and FINALLY knew who sang it. Of course...a few years later "Wonder What's Next" came out and Chevelle rocketed to the top of the U.S. Rock charts. - I thoroughly enjoyed the Powerman and Static-X sets. Not a lot of theatrics, just fun hard rock.

Bloody difficult question. Probably The Stone Roses at the Etihad Stadium, The Wave Pictures cause of the intimacy of the gig or any of the gigs at our now defucnt local music venue The Square. But I've got Primal Scream, Pixies and The Chats coming up so they might creep their way in 😅

I've seen Ramstein in the U.S., and I don't think they did the cannon-cock bit...but they did use some pyrotechnicis, which is pretty much the only time I've ever seen them at that particular venue.

I saw Lil Wayne and Mac Miller together when I was 16, yeah yeah I know... Since then I've seen Paul McCartney, Ed Sheeran, Roger Waters and Neil Young. Roger was by far the coolest show, but the coolest moment was singing Hey Jude with Paul and like 30-40k people.

3 things. Firstly; Sonisphere 2011 was amazing!! That Memory Remains moment Scott mentions is one of my all time greatest gig moments. Secondly, why so much hate for Muse??? They are easily one of the best British rock bands ever! Finally I would like to put forward my best concert (which I think Scott may agree with), which is Alter Bridge and the Parallax orchestra at The Royal Albert Hall! A truly phenomenal show and a once in a life time experience.
