The light gets polarized due to dust interaction with the magnetic fields in which the dust tends to orient in specific directions. Then when the light hits it, one polarization component of the light (usually parallel to the long axis of the dust grains) is absorbed more than the other. This preferential absorption is called dichroism and results in the transmitted light being polarized.

I remember Fraser Cain saying once: “whenever there’s a mystery in astronomy, it always ends up being dust or magnetic fields.” Well there you go, more magnetic fields. And how much do those fields influence galaxy formation and evolution ? It’s probably screwing up the maths badly, but it deserves to be studied much more extensively.

Just curious - are we ready to talk about Electric Universe ideas yet? You can literally see the mag fields associated with star formation here. Or does someone have a way of producing these ubiquitous & huge magnetic fields that does NOT involves electric sources? There are vast ions streams that Anton has shown in previous videos & ionised clouds etc. both in & between galaxies. At what point do we say, denial is no longer a valid position to hold? The Great Wave - IIRC the solar system is also 'waving' as it travels around the disk, alternating above & below the galactic ecliptic. Also there's the Radcliffe Wave, nearby to our stellar arm. A 'ripple' circa 9k ly long (so far - more obs needed) so the Wave would seem to be an ongoing effect. (Edit: Ahh, Anton mentions the Radcliffe)

Ponder a galaxy moving at 51% the speed of light through space, colliding with another galaxy moving in the opposite direction at 51% the speed of light. What would the effect be on space between the stars crossing each other? What would be the result of a rare direct hit between two massive stars, with the combine energy 102% the speed of light? If our sun was in one of those galaxies, and a star passed through our solar system, what would we see? I mean, it would be moving faster than lightspeed, literally. We know the energy scaling laws, right?
@interstellarsurfer2 күн бұрын
I would wager the radiation from gas molecules colliding would vaporize most of both galaxies.
@AwfulnewsFM2 күн бұрын
it would look like their relative velocites add up to 1.02c from your frame of reference, assuming you are an outside observer sitting in intergalactic space and the original velocities are measures from your frame of reference. but from the frame of reference of either galaxy the other would not be moving at 1.02c, it would be smaller than c, these are the types of subtleties which we need to keep in mind when discussing these things.
@lasarith22 күн бұрын
No, they would both hit each other with 51% of the energy ( needed for that velocity) that is if the stars actually managed to hit each other in the first place .
@lasarith22 күн бұрын
Plus you need to remember that it would be over a distance of 7+ billion lightyears for 0.51C and the galaxy’s themselves would only be moving as fast as the local mega parsec .

The image at 6:37 shows the filaments intersect the galaxy at the star forming regions, but the causation seems likely to be in reverse. The magnetic field is caused by central activity or overall magnetism of the galaxy, and where its filaments hit the galactic disk, cause stars to form.

I bet during the image at 11 minutes 18 seconds in. That the "star arrow movement direction" slowly drags to point to the center of the huge galactic magnetic center bulge. The spinning "waves" like push those arrows back out away from the center when it hits the stars and likely prevents us outer star systems from falling to center and maintaining what looks like an orbit. The weaker the waves the less wide the galaxy?
