I am not a scientist, just a retired cop with an interest in astronomy. My understanding of Dark Energy is that the concept of it came into existence to explain why the expansion of the universe is accelerating. This acceleration was determined by studies that used type 1A supernovae as a standard candle. These supernovae, it was believed, always go off at 1.44 solar mass due to the Chandrasekhar limit. I learned from "How the Universe Works" (#76 Curse of the White Dwarf) that within the last few years, it has been discovered that not all type 1A supernovae develope that way, that some are actually the merging of binary white dwarfs which makes the mass of at least some type 1A supernovae a different mass. Which suggests that their use as a standard candle is a crooked yard stick, and brings into question if the acceleration is a miscalculation. So, if the studies that determined the acceleration are flawed, isn't it possible that Dark Energy is a calculation error?

Every time I watch your content, I regret getting my degree in Cell and Molecular Biology. I’ve always loved physics and astronomy but when I started college (fall 2000), the energy and excitement about the cosmos was pretty “meh.” At least from my POV. What always fascinated me was how comparable things like biology and astrophysics could be. One being the very small and the other looking similar one the opposite end of the spectrum of size!! And how both big and small tend to share properties and characteristics of movement/attraction/repulsion etc. I appreciate your ability to make such complex material into something all can digest into understanding and comprehension. Also, I am so sorry for your loss. One day at a time. Let that be your focus.

I don't doupt the lambda cold dark matter big bang benchmark model. anton, I have question for you. While is is presumed that information is not lost when matter falls into a black hole, it is understood that overall mass is lost when black holes merge. What happens to the information that is within this "lost" mass that is turned into gravitational waves? Is the information carried by the waves as they propagate towards infinity? Is it imprinted on space/time as the waves pass through space? Thanks for good shows.
