John Cullum played Holling Vincoeur on Northern Exposure in the 1990s. He had been acting in theater, tv, and film long before that, and has continued to stay busy to this day. In this video, I take a look at his career leading up to Northern Exposure, and what he's been doing since. Thanks for watching! #johncullum #northernexposure #alaska

John Collum is a favorite of mine. He was excellent in Northern Exposure and, as it turns out, I had seen him live on Broadway in Shenandoah!! I remember his amazing singing from almost 50 years ago.

A very likeable and believable character on Northern Exposure. He acted young for his age and Shelley sometimes acted more mature so their ages met in the middle so their relationship worked.

I recorded Northern Exposure on video tape back in the 90s. It was a great show and I missed it after it was no longer in the lineup. Mr. Cullum's character Holling was one of my favorites on the show. He played that part very well. I was sad to see it end but all good things do I suppose. Wishing you Well Mr. Cullum from Alabama

Controversial role with Holling and Shelly yeah good way to describe that relationship on television for that time. However it was a loving relationship and the actors appeared to play off one another quite well. Compared to what's on now a days it was very mild. Just agreeing with your description and not trying to kick the bee hive. I am enjoying rewatching the series on Amazon. I remember him on The Middle as Grandpa Big Mike.

I know that his role in "Northern Exposure" was controversial because of the age difference between his character Holling and the character of Shelley Tambo--but they seemed to be such a natural couple. 🌹Very sweet. 🌹

Holling was probably the most complex character in the series. Quebecois in America, reformed hunter, old man in love with a young woman. Lots of paradox. Great show, great writing, and great cast

Northern Exposure was such a great show. But we have to admit that the relationship between Holling & Shelly was just a bit little weird, right? Age differences aside, John Cullum is an amazing actor/singer, & he brought something so special into the role of Holling. Glad to hear he's still with us. He had just turned 94 a few days ago (Fun fact: He shares the same birthday as Gates McFadden (Dr. Beverly Crusher from ST:TNG), Bryce Dallas Howard, Daniel Craig, Rebel Wilson, Ethan Peck (Gregory Peck's real life grandson & currently Spock from ST:SNW) & Jon Bon Jovi). Thanks for the update, Steve! 👍🏻 Speaking of Northern Exposure, I have a special suggestion for you. Would you please consider doing a video on the late Peg Phillips (Ruth-Anne Miller) in the near future?

Ahhh Steven. I’m not sure what year you were born but in 1990-93 NE was the highest rated TV series ever( before HBO,Netflix, etc. Holling and Maurice were outstanding. I’d go as far as saying easily my top 3 if not 1 shows. I doubt dad got into it as much as I did. It’s always great to watch it anytime and start from the beginning and just binge.

I don't know why I can't remember him on ER. Ive watched it so many times., when it premiered and through to the end and around 2006 I started watching reruns on the WB afternoons which I don't think anyone remembers but they only ran one episode a day and that was great because I didn't have time for two. But they only went up halfway through season 5 and then they stopped. They may have stopped their entire afternoons who knows. So I had to go to TNT where they were in season 12 or 13 and work my way back around and then I went as far as they would show and still finishing on NBC. I think I was about to give up in season 14 but I made it to the end. After that I didn't watch it for a while and then when recommending to fans of Grey's Anatomy We all discovered that there was no place that you could see ER except on DVD. Thankfully in maybe 2017 in March someone in the Gray's group noticed it was about to start again on something called pop TV. I figured I didn't have that but I guess it used to be the TV guide channel and I did have it and I didn't miss it and they worked their way through season 6 and then stopped and started again and it wasn't till October that we got to get further than season 6, after doing that a couple of times I stopped watching it and then they put it on Hulu so sure why not? Anyway I've watched it a lot. And I cannot remember Oh he was Mark Green's father. Okay Here is a memorable thing. Due to my late jumping on board of Quantum Leap although I tried many times I kept quitting, I didn't know that John cullum could sing when he and Shelly started singing to the baby. I didn't know he was on Broadway probably until Scott Bakula got the lead role in Shenandoah at Ford's theater in 2006 and I think I saw it nine times even though I was living in Florida at the time. I saw, probably after Northern Exposure John cullum and Janine Turner in the Quantum Leap episode catch a falling star where they did Man of La mancha and John was Don Quixote. Also it was cool to see them together and it was actually before Northern exposure started. As far as I know. But I didn't see it until after. I also saw John on Mad Men. In my brain I had a vision of him smoking a lot and I couldn't remember where... Until I thought of the logical place. I hate watching people smoke. Honestly. And yet I have watched Mad Men a few times. The last time again I got thru three seasons and I really should finish Although I am not sure where. So maybe I should finish rewatching the Americans before it too disappears. Now there is a show that should be rebooted. The timing is appropriate of course Keri has a short series in its second season on Netflix sometime soon I don't know when. But I liked the show and the two of them and I learned a tiny bit of Russian. Really really tiny bit. They were good together and the concept was interesting and the daughter had a brief role on the good doctor playing the dead daughter of Richard Schiff. I do wish the show could be rebooted but I guess the characters would be older so they would probably need to be replaced by other characters I guess. I'm not really sure who I would feel that warm about. And even then I had to get over Matthew quitting brothers and sisters before I could like him in that. Maybe someday there will be fewer streaming services and I will get to see men of a certain age. Without hauling out the DVDs. Either that I'm going to have to move my television or find some way to stream my DVDs to my tablet. I know it wasn't the '70s '80s or '90s but that was a good show. And even better in season 2 when they figured out something for Scott bakula to do. By the way the other day I saw some morning show I think it was with Jean chalet Oh come on that's not how it's spelled g e n e s h a l l i t I believe interviewing William Daniels and John cullum together for something or other, in April of '86. The date was mentioned somehow. This video isn't very old. Isn't John cullum dead? And if so shouldn't you have mentioned it? I feel as if I have expressed condolences to Scott and cannot remember how that could be possible, maybe I did it on Instagram... Scott did a lot of Shenandoah. And finally worked his way up to playing the lead :-) I have to figure that at least one time he worked in a production with John I know he was a fan and the two of them worked together on Quantum Leap. I had forgotten that Scott said that every season on Quantum Leap they tried to kill him. I heard that recently and I wonder if you have covered the show in any of your videos yet but I just got here and I don't know yet.

@@stephensundstrom6379 two options for videos are Patrick Tovatt the man who actually played Cal Stricklyn. (Still don’t know how I got that confused.
