Hence, the trade deficit between China and US is artificially high. With this new port in Peru, goods can be shipped directly without the need of paying US handling and other fees. Nearly all of South America will benefit greatly from the Peruvian megaport in Chancay. Brazil of course will be the #1 economic benefactor (other than Peru) because Chancay megaport will dramatically lower the shipping costs of Brazilian goods going to Asia as well as products made in Asia imported to Brazil and just as important, the transit time will also be much shorter via Chancay which means food products such as fruits that previously was not economically feasible to ship from Brazil to Asia due to time factor will now be possible. As far as the other South American countries, exporters in Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Bolivia, etc are already lining up to begin exporting through Chancay because as it turns out, because Chancay can handle the largest container ships in the world and due to geographic proximity of Chancay to Shanghai, it will actually be significantly cheaper for exporters in all of the above mentioned countries to export their products via Chancay rather than from the ports in their own countries. The current estimate is that 50% of all of the imports/exports of South America will be going through Chancay after all phases are completed. The narrator of this video says it's a $1.3 billion dollar investment but that is incorrect. Only the first phase of Chancay is $1.3 billion. There are 2 more phases coming and the total development investment for completion of all phases currently stands at $3.5 to $4 billion dollars.

Brazil is 2 trillion dollar economy. Brazil ships of Asia bound cargo through the Panama canal. China/Peru/Brazil are building a trans-continental railway. Once completed the majority of Asian bound Brazilian cargo will be shipped via Chancay. As far as Chile goes, yes you are right about their Asian import/export. Before Chancay, that cargo (both inbound and outbound) was mainly going through the Chilean port of San Antonio. With the arrival of Chancay that will pretty much cease as Chancay can receive the biggest container ships in the world (no port in Chile has that capability) but moreover, Chancay has a significant geographic advantage over Chile in that Chancay is closer to Shanghai than any Chilean port and that coupled with Chancay's cargo ship size capacity means it no longer makes economic sense to use any Chilean port for imports/exports to/from Asia so this is why Chancay is now the import/export HUB of South America. Chile will be importing Asian goods and exporting Chilean goods through Chancay from this point forward and the Chilean ports will serve mainly to ferry the goods back and forth to and from Chancay.

The south East Asian countries are growing to become the manufacturing countries of consumer goods as China moves to high-tech industry. The trade between Asia and Latin America goes across the huge Pacific Ocean. The mega container ships that can dock at the Chancay port is very strategic and cost effective.

Actually, what jump-started the mega containership building was the American President Lines C-10 class. These were the first post-panamax ships that also came with the world's most powerful internal combustion engine of the time (57,000 shp) in 1988. I remember sailing into Hong Kong where we were the biggest containership in the harbor in 1989. Five years later, Hong Kong was filled with these huge ships. Making the APL C-10's no big deal anymore. Massive change in the shipping industry in just a few short years.

That was one of the two major factors for which Chancay made so much sense to invest in. #1 Peru is blessed to have some of the greatest depth of its coastline which is what has made this possible without having to do billions of dollars in dredging. Chancay 17.8 meters, Bayovar (still awaiting investment) 25 meters, Corio (still awaiting investment) 27 meters. #2 Peru being in the middle of South America with the extruding coast on the Pacific that puts Chancay closer to Shangai than other ports which otherwise could complete with Chancay such as San Antonio port in Chile, thus even if Chile were to dredge their San Antonio port, it still couldn't complete with Chancay due to the additional distance to Shanghai. Currently many of the South American countries that import and export goods to Asia have been doing so through the port in Los Angeles and/or the port in Manzanillo Mexico. Now, with Chancay, nearly all of that will be instead going through Peru. Current estimates is that over 50% of all South American imports/exports will be going through Chancay. That is HUGE. This does not even factor it yet the proposals for the next Peruvian mega port in Corio which itself will dwarf even Chancay and is a planned $7.5 billion dollar project.
