As a seaman former engineer danish ship engineer, I can't tell the same story. Maersk Lines, Torm Lines, and Norden are all danish companies with a worldwide fleet. Maersk alone is the biggest container shipping company in the world, and I think Torm PLC has done good business in 24, with their specialised fleet. All these companies are over 130 years old so shipping is also about trust. If you need a company to ship and take care of valuable things and deliver right on time. These companies have refined their businesses over decades of years and their customers seem to keep using them. So US politicians can dream of shipping but are the taxpayers really ready to pay for it? In Denmark we used to have a shipyard in nearly every coastal city, but the politicians decided to stop subsidised them so now we only have 12 left and many of them are for smaller vessels. You do a splendid work cap.
@Qce-i6d4 күн бұрын

US taxpayers are unwilling to make *any* investment into the future. Short term cost minimization is all we care about.
@MarcosElMalo24 күн бұрын
Tariffs will pay for subsidies, not the tax payer. Didn’t you know that Trump tariffs are magical and don’t cause inflation because the price increases are never passed on to the consumer? Trump tariffs will pay for everything. It’s like free money. lol, just kidding. Obviously the above claims are pure nonsense. That said, subsidies in the form of tax breaks that create NEW economic activity are less of a tax burden than you might think. Federal and state governments are foregoing tax revenue that didn’t exist previously. So over the long term they aren’t really costing anything (hopefully), they might create eventual revenue (best case), or they might have a smaller cost but have other benefits that make the cost worthwhile. Put another way, it’s not a loss of revenue if that revenue wasn’t there to begin with. Granted, a lot depends on how the tax break is structured. I’m sure we can imagine scenarios were it all goes wrong and instead of growth, there is merely a shift of activity from existing ports. I haven’t read the legislation that was just passed. I guess Sal hasn’t had a chance to analyze it either because it got pushed through the House of Representatives so quickly.
@Markle2k3 күн бұрын
@@VladimirPutin-p3t And if you want a trigger word that works on the far-left and the far-right, it is “subsidized”. Frame your target as being subsidized and you can bypass all their cognitive functions. It doesn’t even matter if the subject does something that they would otherwise support. This is something that the Russian propaganda machine weaponizes constantly.

The channel seems to confuse building ships with having a lot of ships as being the same, Denmark has the biggest and many other big shipping companies but also what is called bunkering or ship service around the world so they can get fuel and whatever they need and port facilities to. But it’s not just Denmark most shipping capacity is owned by European companies. Denmark might not build the big ships anymore but we bye them from mostly South Korea, they can build ships at a decent quality to price ratio that is not possible in Denmark. It would be nice if it was possible but it’s not economically viable there is a reason why Denmark is so much more efficient and low debt then the US we usually don’t waste money on vanity projects

And interrogated as such. If found to be cupable, the vessel should be seized, its cargo sold and the vessel scraped. Perhaps the rules of innocent paasage also need revising. Yes, since St. Petersburg is at the end of it. Its a major Russian shipping hub, shipyard and naval base. It has many major ports in and around it at the Russian end of the gulf. Most relevantly at Ust-Lunga on the south coast of Gulf near Estonian border Russians have a large oil export harbor. However they aren't most likely waiting to unload, rather waiting at anchoring for their turn to the pier side to load Russian oil for export. Russians have little need to import oil. Unless it is intra Russian transit say from the Arctic oil fields with no pipeline being brought in to the refineries. So yes, Gulf of Finland is always full of Russian flagged vessels or foreign vessels enroute to or leaving from St. Petersburg.

It would make sense that these ships should need to provide proof of sufficient insurance or post a bond to transit Baltic territorial waters when they can cause this kind of damage.

There is an old Russian man in Moscow who believes the same thing about the USA. Funny, in’nit?

I was a Australian Merchant Seaman, when we had a Merchant Fleet, we were in Western Australian Port, while driving back to our Ship, in a car we borrowed of the Wharfies, we picked up three Africans hitchhiking, it turned out they were crew of a Greek Ship in Port next to us, we went onboard, the British Officers didn't want us onboard, we played the Union card and got onboard and found the filthy conditions these men were living in, low quality food, long working hours and poor pay, but what turned this into a Union issue was this Ship was carry cargo on the Australian coast which was illegal, so long story short, we blocked the Ship sailing until the Crew were paid Australian rate of pay and hard lying pay for the conditions for the time they were in Australian Waters, which turned out substantial. , it worked out for this Crew, we also threatened the company which had several Ships operating to Australia, that if the Crew were penalised in anyway we would black ban all the companies Ships. Big companies around the World employing poorly train, if trained at all Crews from third world Countries and exploiting them, the Qualifications of the Officers on some of these Ships are also doubtful, but greed has won and these dangerously operated Ships ply the world trade.

Good work Sal, thanks. Regarding the Finland-Baltic incident, it might be an interesting story to report how the Finns found the lost anchor apparently at the site of the damaged cable, probably using some high tech hydrographic/side-side scan/underwater camera technology. The graphics for this would be fascinating.

Sal, thank you very much for your very informative videos on shipping. I know very little about this industry, which I find very interesting. So, I appreciate the education that I'm getting from your presentations!!!

At some point could you address for people like me how/why ships are flagged in fringe countries? You wouldn't domicile your bank in any of them, nor other businesses? Cook islands is barely a country. Part of the Seafarer issue? Clean fuel?

The Russians can be quite literative when they lie. Sadly, this is a dying trend as all the good writers have left.

For historical context and documentation of ruzzian incompetence and the economic acidity of ruzzian graft, please consider Hedrick Smith's book, "The Russians} (1976). What was described then is even more true now. . . .Although, at the time Smith expressed in the book that the ruzzian/soviet military industry was not allowed to be touched by graft, an assumption that present day use of ruzzian military equipment shows to be beneath shoddy.
