Another remark about the consoles. Who decided to make the edges sharp? Having over 7+ years of sea duty in the US Navy, I know all edges should be rounded to reduce injuries when a person is thrown into them in heavy sea. Believe me it happens often. Yes, blunt edges still cause hurt, however, usually not as bloody.

Lucky her my generation not allowed because my dad paid for college for me to find a man to support me the rest of my life where my brother was to do great things allowed to attend the college of his choice of California Polytechnic San Luis Obispo that four years later was impacted in 1971 this they declined yet my brother failed to tell the family that I would have been accepted if I had spent one semester at local junior college in that county that automatically allowed transfers to that college thus I never became a History teacher because the other college Cal State Northridge had too many students couldn't get the classes I needed for two years then CA had too many teachers no jobs in 1973. I was pulled from college and learned the truth from my father when he got mad because he blamed me because my behavior may be investigated by Elanco the corporation that my brother applied for a job. Instead my brother got offer to work for Del Monte in San Francisco but had to have high number on the military lottery for Vietnam war because political issues with poor kids getting drafted the college students got deferred. Please do a show about Grace Hooper because I returned to college for a CIS degree but had to choose between my college or medical care for my mother in 1984.

Great video again Sal. One correction. TOTE was the contract administrator and ship construction supervisor, but they did not design the ships. Both the concept design and guidance contract design were done by Herbert Engineering with funding and oversight directly by MARAD. Philly Shipyard and TOTE contractually were able to build any ship meeting the overall specifications, but very few deviations were actually made from the guidance design package provided by MARAD.

Not mentioned here is that TOTE was owner of the ill fated "El Faro" and by many mariners considered to be at very least partially responsible for promoting a culture that resulted in her loss. ln less polite terms, TOTE has blood on its hands.

I can say that the conversation has been had among us worker bees at MARAD to use this hull for other platforms, to include the T-AVBs (I can't speak for leadership, just hallway talk). There are a lot of moving parts that have to fall in place, since these decisions involve multiple Departments and Agencies. The strategy makers will more than likely look at what the future of the USMC's mission will be in regards to using platforms like the CURTISS & WRIGHT. Can this mission be done in a way that does not require a large ship? But the hull is in production and the production line is churning. It would be good to take advantage of that for other vessel platform construction projects.

Another excellent report about the Maritime Industry and Education. I have really enjoyed your reports and this one especially as it impacts our mutual Alma Mater. How excited the Faculty and Cadet Corps must be to receive such a valuable and modern training ship. We had to contend with a ship built in the 50's, built as a troop transport with many systems being antiquated and manually operated, but I agree with you that she had beautiful lines which stood out especially with a fresh coat of paint. I hope that they post some videos of future cruises and walk throughs of the new vessel. Keep up the great work and Happy New Year!

Great story, Sal. As a former relief worker who, on the very same relief operation (in the USVI after Hurricane Irma) was first berthed in a "rack" in a troop berthing area on the Wright and then moved to a double stateroom on a cruise ship that FEMA chartered for the purpose, I will say it's great to see something more suitable for the task. As a side note I'm at Derecktor Shipyards in NY just wrapping up a refit and I will be steaming past your alma mater in a couple of weeks, so I'm looking forward to seeing Empire State up close. Her predecessor was a regular landmark on our way to and from LIS.

I was interested in this until you said TOTE was doing this. I did standby for TOTE in Tacoma, Wa several times. Their old new ship was really nice until you had to do maintenance. Stupid stuff like the console you mentioned here. Many of the engine room pumps were accessible only through major stripping of other eqpt covering them. Never saw anything like it. It was too bad, otherwise it was a nice ship.
@maxmacdonald7174 Жыл бұрын
I see why they built that overly long control panel. Keeping the price down is the biggest one. You can do plenty of testing in shop before installation. Taking care of systems electronics noise from interfering with each other and fix it beforehand save money and time.
Philly Shipyard is a particularly efficient shipyard. It’s effectively a copy of a yard that was built in eastern Germany after the wall fell. As a result, it’s well-planned and fairly heavily automated, especially for an American yard.
@robertguttman1487 Жыл бұрын

As a current MUG at maritime I can say the limited time i’ve spent on the ship has been nothing but enjoyable. During indoc we spent 5 nights on the ship and the ac was so nice instead of being in the hot dorms and standing a quarterdeck watch and going on a round of the ship at 0300 is both an enjoyable and terrifying experience because it’s great to be able to walk around the ship but it’s very easy to get lost especially on your first one but I can’t wait for sea term 2025.

Hmm, class of '89......well, I was the class of '70 at CMA. We were the last class to sail on our training ship. It went off to scrap. Attracting vessels 24 meters (78 feet) in width to transit. Attracting vessels 8.9 meters (26 feet and 6 inches) in depth to transit. NMSV are 524.5 ft long, 88.7 ft wide and draw 21.4 feet. Once again, we see Great Lake mariners taking a back of the bus position in overall needs. Apparently, the US powers that be do not feel that Lakers hold any position or contribution to American trade and therefore, the training of new mariners and officers is currently more than adequate for the long future ahead...well, I guess that is part for the nautical course the US is playing on. Sad though, isn't it? The slow death of a necessary fleet and the sailors who ply the lakes? Who knew this was to become the direction of short sighted politicians and senior sailors who haven't worked a deck in a decade? Truly sad.
@jamesmurney1374 Жыл бұрын
They have too much beam (88 feet) to get through the St Lawrence Seaway. (78 feet max). Great Lakes would be better served to partner with a Great Lakes shipping company to add berthing to a vessel trading on the Lakes and then rotate cadets through.

They need a better name than National Security Multi-Mission Vessel for at least three reasons: 1. NSMV is awkward to say, as yu point out. 2. Calling it "national security" makes it sound like a spy ship -- I assumed it was going to be the US equivalent of the Russian _Yantar._ 3. Two missions (training and disaster relief" isn't "multi".
