12 Days in a Controversial Cabin With a Blocked View

How much is a good view from a cabin worth? I put it to the test by booking an 'obstructed view' cabin with no idea about what would be obstructing it or how much.
I’m currently on a cruise and I’m staying in a balcony cabin that has a quirky downside that I’ve never had on a cruise ship before.
The cruise lines don’t advertise cabins like these and most people have no idea that they exist. I found this cabin almost by accident and booked it because of the discount price.
Like quirky cabins? Check out these from my controversial cabin series:
This cabin faces INSIDE the ship: • 7 Days In a Controvers...
This cabin faces backwards: • I Cruised in a Cabin T...
This bathroom has a glass wall! • Nowhere to Hide: I Sta...
This cruise has taken us from Singapore to Tokyo and for me it has been a real bucket list adventure, like most bucket list things though it hasn’t been cheap and when booking I knew that the flights from the uk would likely cost more than the cruise itself.
With that in mind, I really didn’t want to spend more than I had to on the cabin but I also didn’t want to miss out on anything as I’d come half way around the world for this trip. I didn’t want to book an inside cabin and miss out on seeing something incredible, but also didn’t want to pay full price for a balcony which was almost double the inside cabin price. This was already the most expensive trip I’d ever planned.
I decided to compromise and try something new. I booked what is called an obstructed view cabin and I really hoped that I wouldn’t regret it.
There have been both negatives and positives that I hadn’t considered before the cruise, even though I thought I was well prepared.
To save a little more money I booked what is called a guaranteed cabin, that meant that I didn’t pick my specific location and could be given a cabin anywhere on the ship and most importantly for me, with any level of obstruction. I could have a tiny thing obstructing the bottom corner of my view. Or I could be facing a lifeboat head on, with no view of the ocean at all.
The lifeboats usually are a lovely colour but that didn’t mean that I wanted to stare at one for 12 days.
A couple of months before the cruise my cabin was assigned, when the email popped up I was excited, but a little nervous, I hoped that I’d made the right decision.

I think using the lifeboats as tenders is a SUPER idea!!! ... When an emergency arises, the crew would be SO comfortable with getting everyone to safety as they use them fairly regularly. GREAT idea financially too, those things must be worth a fortune! .. Great multi-use feature!

@@connor1586 Half the people aren't on the boat either so they don't need as many. And I imagine they will be in communication with the ship and could come back to help if needed.

@@connor1586As someone else commented, there would be a reduced need, since passengers have used those lifeboats to get to shore. The other good thing, is that the ship is not underway, and is not too far out to sea. If there was an emergency, the remaining lifeboats should suffice ... and boats from shore should be able to get their fairly quickly to add in the evacuation.

All those towel animals made me smile. I assume you did also when you saw them. Having the lifeboat there really doesn't seem like a major issue. It actually gave more privacy when seated out there. I'd have been more bothered by the bass thump from the club below

Hi Emma, Just want to say I enjoy your videos. I'm a travel agent in the US, and getting first hand looks and opinions that aren't shined up by the cruiselines is invaluable! The subtleties like what the viewing area in a theater is like, what options there are on the menus, how much motion is felt on board... All helpful. I have absolutely applied these to how I book and hopefully that's had a positive impact on people's vacations. Keep it up and hope to see more ships!

I am just going to say it otherwise it will bug me. the "white metal parts" as you called them are called Davits. more specifically Gravity davits/ Gravity Multi pivot davits which are industry standard/Most common on cruise ships. Lifeboats used as Tenders is more common than people realise.I was trained to release, Prep etc a lifeboat but never really had to do it even for Tender ports.

A good idea for balconies in cabins like this would be high seats with a tray attached, like an adapted lifeguard seat. Guests could sit with a drink & enjoy a better view.

Thank you Emma. I’m going on this ship in two weeks time. I’m travelling solo in a Studio Balcony room with obstructed view. It’s a four night cruise from Singapore to Penang and Phuket. I’m aware that the view could be good, to quite obstructed, but the price was very affordable and being on my own, I don’t think I’ll be in my room a great deal except for sleeping. Also, due to it being the tropics, I’m sure I won’t be sitting on the balcony alone for extended periods. The ship is huge, which is a first for me, and I’ll be busy doing many other things than worrying about the view. It is way more preferable to me to see the sky from my bed. So, Thankyou again…love your videos and adventures! Warm regards from Perth Western Australia 🇦🇺

The metal objects that raise/lower boats are called davits (USN pron DAH-vits, British pron may differ).

Wait, why is having no idea where your cabin will be called booking a "guaranteed cabin"? You have zero guarantee about your cabin!

Because you are guaranteed to get at least the type you booked 😀💪🏼

@2:00 Nothing to do with anything but, why is the drummer behind a plexiglass shield? Do people throw things at the drummer a lot? Does the drummer throw things at the audience?

Ha ha, nope it's so the other microphones don't pick up the drums apparently! :)

I was looking forward to Capt Hudson v3, but I missed out because it wasn't mentioned in this video. I usually watch KZbin on an app on my TV that does not display comments, so I didn't get the word in time. Bummer.

1. person in the lifeboat in case of emergency, no crouching through smoke-infested corridors barefoot, stepping on those pointy LEDs on the video... 😃

My wife and I have never cared about the cabin view. We have been hit with cabins that are noisy and one that was smelly. As long as the bath is sufficient, the beds are comfy, and there's room for our luggage, we check the good to go box. This includes inside rooms. It's not that we don't appreciate a balcony, it just doesn't appreciably change our vacation satisfaction. Maybe as we get older that will change

I cruise once a year if I’m lucky. No way I would book that cabin. I cruise to see the water not a boat.

Emma, I'm new to your videos since I just started getting interested in taking a cruise. And being from the U.S. I'm still trying to get used to your British accent. But it's become clear to me that your videos are very interesting and informative, and I like your style. You're so cute with how much you love Captain Hudson! Haha. I'm learning more and more from you, and I hope you have some tips and tricks videos to prepare me for what I need to do to book and enjoy a cruise. I'm becoming a fan and just subscribed! Thank you for the work you put into this for everyone watching!

The most interesting tidbit for me: You used the tap to make Squash?!? That's amazing. For some reason, I thought the water was like water on an airplane...No go for drinking. I think the obstructed view would be ok for someone who cruises a lot or whose first priority is saving money. For 150£, I'd probably upgrade. However with that heat and humididty, maybe not(how much time wpuld I spend out there?). Great video, super informative, as always❤.

The white metal arms that lower the lifeboats are called davits. I learned that term from watching 1997 titanic film. Architect/engineer/designer Andrews explained the lifeboat situation to Rose. It was foreshadowing.

I think having a lifeboat blocking the lower half of the view from the balcony would help with my vertigo just because I wouldn't be able to look directly down at the water. I'd actually go on the balcony more often than I would with an unobstructed view. But, yeah, I think I'd be annoyed with the club music.

My rule for long distance travel is to force yourself to immediately adapt to the new timezone. Stay up to your normal bedtime, get up to your normal alarm, and eat meals at normal time. Sunshine and exercise also help.
