So about your animal research question. It depends on a few things. One is coming up with your presentation or pitch on what you wish to accomplish, how you will collect data, and how long do you think it will take. Funding often comes from Governments, Museums, or other organizations. As for how long that depends on the funding you got. Sometimes if you have good evidence but not full conclusion you can go back and show what you have to keep you research going. Other times you might end up instead of 6 years, only needing 3-4 if you get the data you wanted. After that you take all the data collected sit down for a year or two and write a research paper on it. I left this kind of vague as it can get complicated depending on your research. Often your own research will be used for future researchers to look back on for reference.

That question you asked about animal research around 13:20 to 14:00 or so reminds me of this one sketch from The Onion about a guy who spent years of his life researching anteaters. If you haven't seen it, you should, it's great, but it's also relevant to your point.

If you can name an animal odds are at least a few scientists are currently observing it. Animal research never ends and we always learn new things.

I did see a gibbon entertain himself by repeatedly shredding newspaper and throwing it up in the air just to catch the pieces. That was random.

I have experience in scientific research and work in an animal-based research lab, and depending on the field a researcher can expect to spend years on a study. For reference, a dissertation (project for earning a PhD) commonly takes at least 3 years. Scientists can work on multiple projects at the same time, and often they build on each other. Also, a lot of time is spent on recording results and writing the paper, which involves reading other peoples' research and proving why your research is significant. The study in question probably took so much time because they had to travel frequently, find the gibbons, hope to see them do something noteworthy, record them, go home, and repeat.
