I do go to a shop but the closest one is an hour away and I also use EBay. Was wondering what other options everyone would recommend.

@@Stickygoose Correct...and supposedly Marvel has either sent a letter or email essentially telling them to stop doing it. Black Flag is supposed to be doing the same thing again at Boston this weekend with 3 more exclusive Acetate covers that are "supposedly" limited to 350 copies each. BF has said they are going to have 2 separate lines to get them. One line for collectors where 100 copies will be available with a limit to 1 per person. And the real kicker is there will be a second line for "flippers, influencers, etc." where they can purchase up to 10 copies. Besides all of that just being flat out stupid as is, how the hell do they think they are going to determine who a flipper, influencer is. I hope Marvel steps in and brings down the hammer on all this and the books never even make it into anyone's hands. and shame on CGC for grading that UF4 trash with a blue label...not to mention giving some copies a 9.9 and 10 grade.

We first opened our coin and antique store back in 1979. Closed it in 1993. We went through the Hunt Brothers busting the silver market with their dump of silver. We seen the card market crash. We watched the comic market crash. We worked with a grading company that we found upgrading for $$. There are eBay comic sellers who make you tube videos pushing comics. They often lie about the prices of graded comics. To many factors effect this hobby. I appreciate you exposing these you tubers for their fraudulent videos.

Great video. A lot of points are exactly correct. Otherwise why would they have pulled all their videos down on it. I think they have really underestimated the hate for this. My feed has been full of this for days and every and I mean every comic book forum or website is talking about this. This is a terrible decision by Black Flag, an embarrassment to CGC and a humility wake up call for some podcasters and influencers. This is not good publicity for any of them. Not all whatnot sellers are scammers.... I know great sellers on whatnot. they just aren't "influencers" or whatnot's "chosen ones". I sell on whatnot and about 95% of the people i *choose to* interact with are actually great and fair - as sellers and as buyers. Just wanted to mention that. Also I do not condone what whatnot is doing - i have a TON of issues with many of the business practices and choices whatnot makes. but that doesn't make everyone on whatnot evil or scammers etc. I hope they get rid of the fakes and start to focus on the platform and supporting the people who are actually doing respectable business.

Just to let you know, marvel did not approve of this book. They approved of the original book (the book without the Acetate added which they sell on their website.) They breached their agreement with Marvel, so it's possible they force them to recall the books if the controversy gets big enough.

I 100% agree with you that things like this are predatory and this specific type of thing is disgusting and ruins comics. I disagree about writing off whatnot completely though. Yes, those bigger sellers who just hopped on there who already had huge followings on Instagram and KZbin but there are a lot of good smaller sellers on there, and even brick and mortar stores who made channels. Anyone who’s going to cons to buy dumb exclusives and sell them for 5 times the prices the next day should be ashamed of themselves but I don’t think you should write off an outlet that allows some people who might not have a good local comic book store to have access to comic books. Love the zeal, just need a little discernment.

No one comes a cross well here. - The KZbinrs defence is the same a scalpers. - The Retailer looks bad, negative goodwill has costs. - CGC continuing to look like a joke. They are hurting their brand with the grades and labels. - Even the “collectors” and fans don’t look that great. It's one of the oldest tricks around. It happens in everything all the time. Let's take for an example real estate. I worked for some investors. They would come in to a small town and start buying and selling but they would buy and sell to each other back and forth build values up and then when others see everything sky rocket the investors will sell to them next and then pull put. Leaving them to hold the property that is jot worth what they paid. All that FOMO. And when the people who own WhatNot also control a lot of the apps and programs that set the prices for price guides Ita easy for them to control everything. Just like I know there are sone software and hardware programs that. You know what never mind.

I agree with you 💯 but please don’t lump ALL WN sellers into those who are sponsored/partnered with WN. I sell on there as a hobby and I’ve seen this coming for a while. These partnered sellers have ruined the whole platform for small hobby sellers. WN is filled with resellers who only want to pay $3 for a $40 book. It’s also filled with sheeple who flock to these individuals and purchase a $3 book for $40 just to watch CGI ducks raise or find a golden ticket to qualify for a mediocre slab. It blows my mind. I’m thinking of jumping off of the platform and just doing IG or eBay again.

Feeding the hysteria seems to be a growing cottage industry. There was a KZbinr raving about his huge acquisition which he was gearing up to unload on Whatnot and he really didn’t seem to know books. He was showing low grade filler in the boxes and they were largely un bagged, boarded and some in crappy stacks. When I pointed out his lengthy video didn’t seem to show anything worth collecting, he responded super defensively. What may be worst of all, his roll seemed all about the awesome low bulk purchase price versus what he was bound to reap from his Whatnot auctions. With a large following, it seems there will be numerous followers of his paying collector prices for low grade reader copies of inconsequential comics. In the event I am wrong, and there were loads of keys, minor keys and high grades, he certainly could have given those books some air time to support what he was selling. I’m still doubting it and he fits perfectly with the type you’ve outlined here except many of those famous guys you allude to actually know comics at least.

Great video. What's not understood is that the advice you are giving won't be heard by the audience that those "sellers" cater to. Those "sellers" target a certain type of collector and feast on them. It's sad and unfortunate, but this practice (as others have said) is not new. There's not much a rational person can do to better inform the audience of those "sellers" because the "sellers" already have them as online friends for life. I wish there was more we could do, but the greed of the "sellers" and "platforms" will always be louder than the voices of real comic book collectors, investors, and general hobbyists.

I would classify this comic book as "hot garbage". If anyone buys this for a jacked-up premium, it's poor consumer sense. There are better ways to spend your money. This whole thing is a mess. I know Gem’s response was condescending but just saying all Whatnot is a scam is reacting emotionally. This also comes down on people actually being willing to pay whatever for these things. Don’t paint with too broad of a brush. Black Flag is probably the biggest problem here. Making this stupid “exclusive” using their dead stock of their last “exclusive” then the way they handled it. That’s the worst of it IMO. I don’t think a video like this helps the discussion at all.

@@Stickygoose Yeah, It can feed on emotion and bidding war but I’ve gotten a lot of good deals on there. There are good people there and it’s a new innovative platform. You sound like you’re upset about a couple big sellers and just painting with that massive brush across the entire platform. Those big sellers get 200, 300 + people in there. Sure they always start a $1 but then it’s up to the buyer and what they’re willing to pay. I’ve pretty much never bought from those big accounts because so many bidders keep bidding up. That’s your choice to use Whatnot just the same as eBay, or MySlabs, or Insta lives, or whatever. I’m not trying to convince you to like Whatnot. That’s up to you. Just seems like you’re being too broad in regards to the platform on the whole.

@@Stickygoose I'm with Ladd. Whatnot has plenty of great seller channels where you can get nice deals. But most marketplaces are like this. Plenty of overpriced stuff, but plenty of deals if you have patience. I do agree with you though all of this stuff happening on whatnot is f*cked up.

Black Flag Comics took a reprint and stapled a piece of plastic to it with some shitty artwork, and turned around and sold it for $85/$100, and they also picked and chose who to sell it to. If Marvel does not take any legal action then good for Black Flag, they made a lot of money selling back issues accumulating dust. If anyone is going to be stupid enough to buy that crap then that's their problem, not the seller's. Neither Black Flag or the resellers took advantage of anyone. They can sell whatever crap they want and if there are people stupid enough to buy it, or cry about not getting one, for a ridiculous price, then that's on them. Guess what; nobody is entitled to anything, if you're not smart enough to see past this manufactured rarity garbage, worse being a pre-existing reprint with some crap stapled on to it, then you're in the wrong hobby.

Whatnot sellers suck. Its truely a bummer seeing people in the comic industry that I have highly admired for a long time being shady. These are people who know better. How are they exposed? This isn't their first con, they get deals on books and they flip them? People know what they pay, they can see the prices drop after cons they can check ebay. Some people enjoy paying more to be the first, or to support a channel. Plus for people nowhere near chicago the prices paid for some exclusives are till cheaper than having to pay to travel to the con themselves. At least they aren't making half-ass KZbin videos slamming other people because its the cool hip thing to do. And I understand the relationship between the date of my comment and the date of this video and the info that has been released since. But you made this video and have left it up, you are worse then them. The book didn't have 4 additional staples it had 2 additional, and 4 staples with acetate isn't necessarily a red flag. Marvel not making a statement early didn't have to do with making money, Marvel made the money about a year ago when Black Flag made the book so how would their silence and letting sell mean money for them? By the 9th when you made the video word of the C&D letter Marvel sent had made it rounds. I stopped watching at the 3:07 mark, so I don't know what other ignorant crap you said but your video is ignorant, in bad taste. It like you are taking situation and flipping it to capitalize on it for profit, hypocritical!

So what I’m getting from this is that you don’t know anything about this entire scenario, don’t know what a “lenticular cover” is, and are extremely jealous of Tom. Not sure who you are or where your information is coming from but almost everything in this video is misleading or just flat out wrong. You very obviously weren’t there, you don’t even know the correct number of staples in the book or what it cost? You did break the case though, people buy things and sell them for a profit. Now that we know this, we can start to rebuild.
