I do feel that buying any newish bike is basically a write-off of at least a third of the initial purchase price. I like to think that the cost of a 2 week family holiday is about what I lose at the next trade in and it doesn't feel so outrageous. Very much enjoying your content thank you.

I'm in my 50s and after many years and many, many dozens of cars and bikes, I will NEVER darken the doorstep of a dealer again. I would rather get a bank loan and buy a nice bike from a private seller if that's the way I wanted to go.. The warranties are not worth the paper they're written on and once you're out the door, they are not really interested in you or the bike. Last week, I picked up a 30 year old VFR750 for a £1000, absolutely lovely thing, even with 67k on the clock. I'll be prepping it over winter and taking it to Europe in spring. I've had fairly new Tracers, Fazers, Tigers, CBF1000 etc etc.. all great machines but too much money tied up in them and too much depreciation for me.. Even my car is 32 years old and guess what..? No engine management light.. ;-)

I'm in the market for a bike in the £4-7k range (buying outright with cash) and tbh, the prices people want for used is daft. Yes a lot are immaculate, with very low milage. But why would i pay £5k for a 3 year old used one when i can get brand new for £700 more from a dealer, 100% no risk, no accidents, no need to check it over or HPI it, and no messing with payment options.

One of the problems I've come across looking to buy a cash second hand bike from a private seller is, they want to get top money or above more or less getting back what they paid for it a year or two ago, I have a good look around to see prices of second in dealerships, Auto Trader and compare them to private sellers, you can often get a bike cheaper from a dealer with some warranty, I just keep looking for a bargain bike with all the extra's and a decent price regardless of who's selling it. You have to be prepared to make a loss selling second hand bikes, whether trading in or selling privately, or be stuck with it for a long while.
@ontheroadadventure
@ontheroadadventure 10 ай бұрын
I Agree, however ours was by far the cheapest available. You have to be realistic if you want to make a sale. People often over value their bikes and want to include the value of extras that they spent, but we all know you never get that money back

I think that during covid all bike prices got inflated new and old. The problem is now that the prices have stayed high, probably due to the fact that people who bought in covid who paid top price still want to get top price back. The other worry when buying used is buying a melon??

I’m one of the elusive second hand buyers, searching at the moment. My personal opinion? People want too much for their bikes, simple as that. If they were priced right, they’d sell. Same with houses, they get listed for, let’s say £200k, they don’t sell, they drop the price, they sit for a while, then they go for £170k, the price they should have been listed for in the first place. Almost every bike I look at, I’m thinking, if that was a bit less….just my opinion.

Seen too many lemons on peoples drives that are just a few hundred quid cheaper than buying from a dealer where you have some consumer rights to protect you. Triumph are a good well known premium brand,costing £10 K and upwards new.It`s reasonable to expect to get say £6 K for a 2 or 3 yr old good example, BUT as you point out that sort of money will buy a new 650 Royal Enfield for example.The market has been distorted against the premium brands by relatively cheap imports from India and China. In addition,as I have said, the rider demographic has changed as well,plus winter is no good for sales and on top of all that there has been massive cost of living increases.Another factor is the proliferation of lower speed limits and enforcement cameras,so the once sought after high performance bike is less desireable. All things considered it`s a crap time for bikers.

Now supplies of these are available and people no longer seem desperate to get their hands on them there seems to be an oversupply. My local (100 mile round trip) BMW dealer had a shop full of used bikes, end of lockdown more or less all sold in four or five days. My four year old car, 39k miles sold to a dealer for £300 less than I payed new. The average age of the UK motorcyclist is around 54 and rising. This means the follow up of young people wanting to buy cheaper second hand bikes is shrinking. Obviously the net effect is a shrinking market for people wanting a second hand bikes, whilst the number of second hand bikes remaining unsold increases at the same rate. Bought one or two with just a couple of hundred miles on them but never actually new. I always let someone else take the hit of depreciation - which is always greatest in the first year or so, and wherever possible, buy from private owners rather than a dealer.

I think the other issues is that pcp is becoming really big. Smallish deposite and have a 20 grand bike and as long as you meet service intervals you have the bike for like 3 to 5 years and either buy it outright or go in for another payment plan on the next new thing. Of course unless you buy it at the end, you never fully own it. However for those who just go out every now and again, the service intervals are rarely over 20 000 miles and I bet very rarely hit major ones like the 30k miles for valve clearances. I would keep it and wait for summer and sell on auto trader or take it to bike night and then put a for sale sign on it

Bottom line with newish S/H bikes is that NO-one has the savings to spend £10k (say) on a bike - but they CAN afford £200/month for a PCP. With sub 2% interest rates for three years is only about $400 in finance charges on a $13k bike loan. Currently if you put $5000 in a high interest savings account for three years at the current rate of 5%, you’ll make $788. @@ontheroadadventure the '40 year rule' still stands. People want the bikes (and cars!) they desired when they were young - so as they reach 60 and have spare money, they buy them. As they pass 70 they think they won't use them that much anymore and try and sell them. The further you get from the '40 year' gap the less interest the vehicles get. Obviously some iconic examples will continue to make good money but, 40 years ago when I started riding, old riders were really chasing pre-war bikes. How much interest is there in a BSA J12 these days? But if you have a clean Katana or CBX 1000 you'll probably still get big money! But I wonder what they will get when they try to sell on in 2030? I know someone who bought a tatty Vincent Rapide about 10 years ago for around £23,000. His argument was they 'never lose money'. He's restored it (£££) and enjoyed using it but a similar example went through Charterhouse in the spring and it sold for £25,000. Financially he would have been 'better off' leaving the money in a savings account! He's 'lost' a lot of money for his grand total of 4000 miles riding! 😆

My Thoughts on this subject differ greatly. I personally refuse to give dealers any money, coz their there for one thing. To rip you off. The GS in the video for example 2015 8yrs old, 31k miles and over £7K for it is mental. If It had 5000 miles for this price would still be too much. And why would anybody p ex any bike on a new one at a dealer. It's just crazy. People that swap every couple of years on a new one is just throwing money to the dealer, and boy do they love this kind of customer. Yeah they treat you like royalty, free coffee and you our best customer and all that twoddle. Course you are, they making a fortune from you. If you buy the right bike it will last you your lifetime if you care for it. And Finally, you need help if you get a "egg foo young Chinese" bike... Please don't

My example based on personal sales, i recently sold a 450mx bike for 2k, same bike everyone else is asking 3.5k - pure scalpers, the thing is i could have held onto it and hoped i would find a fool like these others seem to want to but why? i paid 3.5k 7 years ago, normal to lose 2k or more over that time. Perhaps people selling 2nd hand need a quick assessment of whether they actually want to sell or just have something depreciate under their eyes, 2 very different prospects

During and immediately after covid the market was starved of new bikes, so s/h bikes sold like mad. Until recently my 2015 VSrom 650 was still seemingly worth near what I paid for it, despite me nearly doubling the miles on it. Now there are plenty of new bikes, loads of new models being released...oh and winter is on the doorstep. That said, bargains will always sell and Ewa's Tiger was an absolute bargain. As for new with finance.... that's not an option for everyone, not me that's for sure as a retired person on a budget. I have to buy canny, ex demo bikes or recent s/h. Ended up getting a good and v fair deal against one of the bikes going in etc, but re the other they literally wanted me to hand it over for nothing. Not wishing to be political but I recall around 2019 and brexit in stalemate, reading about car and bike manufacturers warnings about new vehicles snd subsequent soaring used market prices. Like would I want to buy a 21 plate KTM 890 Adventure with 5000 off road miles on it for 9.5k, or buy a brand new, upgraded 23 plate for 11k with 2 years warranty? It's a no brainer! @@ontheroadadventure I haven't seen your video this just sort of popped up, but based on your videos without going into detail you got the typical unlucky KTM luck of the draw. KTM's either fail early or they last forever, fortunately with the former you have warranty. I own a 1290 GT and know many people that own KTMs, I have also ridden a variety of KTMs, and there is no question the 890 adventure is hands down the best bike in the class. I've ridden a few and never had any issues, took one for a 1500 miles trip around romania with off roading and it was faultless, and also ridden a 2022 1290 SAS with 43k(!!!!) miles on it, and I could honestly not tell the difference between that and the demo bike i've ridden at the showroom. I suggest you don't put the KTM down for bad luck in terms of ownership, it's one of those where it's easy to get a lemon and it's not what you want out of a new bike, but once the issues are sorted it'll be unbreakable.
