Whats Inside? Deco Brand Portable Ice Maker.| Disassembly Teardown Rip Apart

Buy me a coffee? www.buymeacoff... Buy me a coffee? www.buymeacoff... I only had this Deco Brand Portable Ice Maker for around 6 months and it died on me. I figured I"d open it up and see if I could find the problem from just a visual. If not, my plan was to keep stripping it all the way down to see what's inside. I was able to get it apart using just cordless Porter Cable Drill and my hands. If I could do this one over again I'd wear some gloves as I sliced myself on the sheet metal during the process. As far as recyclable metals, the inside contained a some copper tubing as well as the radiator being all aluminum. It was fun to take apart just to see what's inside but I would not recommend you buy one of these. When it did work for awhile, it was really nice to have. I would recommend a different brand. This is a bit like watching a gorilla eat a meal! You didn't indicate why it stopped working but I had an RCA version of one of these which I got from Walmart. All these units have almost identical parts just with different outer cases. It failed within a short time and was replaced under warranty. It worked until it was conveniently out of its warranty! I searched on you tube to try and find someone with a similar problem as mine. If you review your video and look for those 2 small green switches on the top right hand side under the cover, these are probably what caused the issue. They are total crap but can be replaced for about 30c each from any electronics supply store. Takes a few minutes to replace and saves you throwing away a perfectly good unit into the landfill all for the price of 2 small microswitches. It would seem nearly all these desktop ice makers use these 2 same poor quality switches which is unbelievable!

If you read the print on the label on the back of MOST portable ice makers, the refrigerant is propane - hence the flammable label pointed out in the video. With respect to the aluminum radiator, as the producer of this video stated, the fins are aluminum but the tubing is copper within the aluminum fins. Mine have lasted a couple years and have lost the refrigerant (aka propane). At this point, it is time to scrap it (really don't want to braze copper with a flammable inside). Rather than toss it in a landfill, may as well make a few bucks for the radiator, copper tubing, compressor, small motors, copper wire, stainless and sheet metal, etc. I think it was a nice video to help me figure out how to get to the scrap $ without using a sledge hammer and trying to collect on the shrapnel.
