As a uh Caucasian non affiliate growing up in the bay area, School was always like 15-1 odds in favor of the Norteno’s. I had like 2 or 3 of my close friends growin up who were Northerners but that gang politics aint have shit to do with me so I had no issue choppin it up and talkin too the few Sureno’s I happened to have classes with in high school😂 . Anyway I came to the conclusion that to last long term as South Sider out here you gotta be built different. Those few was crazy cause they aint have no damn choice. He was huge and was down for anything. I was really small so he was like a big brother homie. He had a kid and changed his life but I'll never forget how gangster that dude was. I went to community School in San Jose back in 98' I went to 2 of them got kicked out of one for fighting. Im From Southern California and lived up there for about a year I was in a group home and we were about 8 homies deep that went up North from the South. At first we got down every day but afterwards we earned our respect, I aint gonna lie upstaters where afraid of Norteños they would always get punked didn't have the heart. After a while we even started chopping it up with Norteños it's a trip cause a lot of them dudes where just like us. I met some solid Norteños from Salas, Gonzales, Chular, Modesto and many more got down with a bunch of them too, dudes from stockton, sacra, modesto San jo, san fra the list goes on. San Jose was one of the best places to grow up for me personally. I grew up in East San Jose off of Fleming/Alum Rock in the hills and the worse incident i can think of was a group of kids next to Cassell where hitting each other with baseball bats fairly playfully. I was a teen in Oakland (mid to late 1990s) before SSL established and lived in the Fruitvale barrio but went to HS across town where there was a bunch of Border Brothers (Black rag paisa gang). The first day of 10th grade they invited me to kick it with them but I kept my distance since I lived and grew up around norteños from FVG, 36th, 38th and E.15th. Eventually, I beefed with the BBs and transfered out to Fremont HS to be with the homies. But I have respect for those dudes bc they never jumped me and it always went down 1 vs. 1. A few years later I even ran into a DFL BB at a banda dance and he just nodded at me letting by gones be by gones even though I was at the fandango latino in his hood. Funny thing is northern homies called BBs "Scraps" until upstate SSL hit the scence and BBS were all like we still dont like ya'll nortes but dont get it twisted, we are our own shit and not sureños. SSL started a war with BB which was not smart bc it surrounded them with enemies, but by that time BB was mostly born and raised in Oakland members and SSL became the new paisa click.

You forget to mention the years. SSL had a small presence from 1995-2010 in Oakland, but was exterminated. They really didn’t stand a chance. As for the BBs they have basically died out too. The remaining bbs are actually cool with the Nortenos in Oakland now.

@@nortecalifas9542 I was in HS from 94-97, and never met, saw or beefed with SSL. At that time it was norte vs. bb. I mostly had funk with VLB BBs as they set up a hood on 27th Ave and I would run into them all around the Fruitvale area. Once I left Oakland in the early 2000s some of my homies still in the town told me how SSL was coming up and growing fast, but I was never part of the beef with SSL, by that time I was living and working out of state.

I went J. W. Fair and then moven to Petter Burnett for and San José high! I got in trouble and got kicked out of the district sent me to santa clara comunity school. Funny thing that school is or was in the Grounds of San José high only diference was that now I was with the fuck ups and outcast besides SJH students be able to go to where I was but I could not cross the street unless we were going ass a class to the gim or the pool. Lucky me there was real Police on watch so any fight had to be out and about. There was an emty lot behind the track that we used as a short cut; big hole in the fence perfect for a ring because it was a fenced private property and aot side of the school Grounds.

Not from down South. Like up here in Vallejo (MAC dre city) Sur 13 runs the streets and we coo and F with em brothers. Our hood OGs are originally from SoCal and we run and identify with 13s. Born in Northern California I never identify and never had a desire to bang 14 because it felt betrayal to the Mexican culture. Northerners got Filipinos, Asians, Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, blacks etc… SouthSiders 13 are mostly ONLY Mexicans and that’s what I identify with. Most upstate South Siders just don’t vibe or feel that northern identity.

Back in 2009-2012 it was cracking, I went to Yerba Buena High School and at the time it was just me and one other homeboy, we were barely starting out so we didn’t get pressed because we didn’t push a hard line nor did we bang our colors or show that we were northerners. Dress code at the time was white shirt khaki pants white gray or black hoodie.. me and the homie were young and naive and scared in a way because the whole school was Sur, didn’t want to expose our cover. Would’ve had to catch the fade with 50 or more fools if we did. We both eventually got transferred to different schools for truancy even ditching independent studies and ditching through the creek to kick it with the homeboys at Rocksprings. 13 had control of YB and McLaughlin, killed a couple good homeboys RIP Ricky. Game changed when I went to San Jose High School. Nortenos outnumbered 13, dress code was you could wear whatever. 50s wing next to the middle field was all homeboys and homegirls all red. 40s wing behind us seperated by a hallway was a dozen or so south siders and paisas. We antagonized the Surenos at school almost daily. It was a good feeling after coming from YB High School to come to a Norteno dominated area and school at SJHS. Alot of good homeboys came from that time. Some still active, some aren’t. SJ Continuation across the street had a bunch more rowdier and down ass homeboys. Caught a case outside of SJ High in the morning jumped a couple eses that were ducking the smoke with some of my homies outside of school by the liquor store that closed down behind the Little Caesar across from the Bonfaire. Did a year in Juvenile Hall and James Ranch in Morgan Hill for it, all of us got caught, got deeper into the life. Got my GED for the free instead of getting a diploma, 28 years old now was 16 at the time. Camera footage from liquor store supposedly got us. But yes it all depends on what area and what school you go to. Some 50/50 but mostly it’s either N and Crip or Ese and Crip sometimes all three. Whoever is deepest usually runs the school and influences the area. Schools in established Hoods are recruiting grounds given the amount of fools gangbanging now. Much respect to some of the south siders out of my age group during that time… some of y’all were with the shit and fought back. A lot are in prison or dead now same with our side.

Early 90s. I was a stoner in high school. A lot of norteno homies. The sureno students were small in numbers but they held theirs down. Eventually after a bit I ran norteno. Got jumped twice by Gramercy foos but I didn't get fucked up I was lucky enough to fend off the first foos with a bat. The second time a beach cruiser was my weapon. I laid out one foo and threw hands with 3 one stabbed me with something small puncture but nothing serious.
