I remember Burgess Meredith mostly from his work on television.

Joanna Barnes will always be remembered for her role as the silly and obnoxiously affected Gloria Upson in the movie Auntie Mame (1958).

1st contestant - Wally should have simply said "He deals in a product" and just let it go at that. But many times he just couldn't help but give away Too Much Info... as if somehow the panel were just not able to come up with the right questions on their own.. so he'd kindly help them along.

Granted, John Daly seemed to be helping the contestants rather than the panel. But one of the changes the show made in moving from network to syndication was to speed up the game so that there would be time for interviews or demonstrations involving the contestants and/or the panel. (Also, there were six minutes of commercials on the syndicated show as opposed to three on the network version.) To do this, the host (Bruner or Blyden) would give broader clues than Daly's "Mr. Thompson is self-employed and deals in a product." The panel would thus get to the heart of the game right away.

I love Joanna and Arlene’s outfits- very ‘70’s, granted, but still very sharp! Gene, once again, had to have been drunk! And it looked like Wally was starting to develop health issues here. He later suffered a heart attack and was one of the first American recipients of a heart transplant. And to me, Burgess Meredith will always be The Penguin and be known for his classic appearances on “The Twilight Zone”!

The first guest... how the hell did she get his line so quick?? She knew... and I'm in past shows many of the panel knew in advance.

Often times a contestant would deal in some way with some big event around the the time of the show. Christmas often had department store Santa's, etc. Opening of baseball season would have a well known player/manager, etc. They knew who/what was in the news and make a guess.

Arlene had been with the show for many many many years, and she was always considered to be one of the brightest of them all. I've watched the old shows and she knows what to ask. I also believe her son graduated from Harvard. Actually, I'm sure of it, because he was on the show with another panelist, Bennett Serf who's son was also at Harvard at the time.

He never did. But he (along with Arlene Francis) did host a special honoring the 25th anniversary of the original WML show.

@@FlavioGirl Thank you for the well wishes. He died in 1983 of colon cancer at the age of 44. I was able to track this episode down with the help of the production company. I have the original confirmation letter mailed to my father from "Whats My Line" confirming his attendance and containing the production details. This helped me (Freemantle media) track the episode down. Freemantle was incredibly gracious in their efforts to find this for me. Also have an actual "Oscar" he was given by Dodge Trophies when he departed the company. My mother and father were both able to attend the 1969 Academy Awards Presentation as well. My father was able to meet his childhood film hero John Wayne as he received is first and only Oscar. I was able to present the episode to my three sisters as a gift a couple of years ago. We had not seen nor heard our fathers voice for over 30 years. He was an exceptional father albeit a short time. We were ages 23, 21, 19 and 11 when he passed.
