Great video. Very informative reviews of the siding products. My house was built in 1921, with wood lap siding. The front left corner of the porch kept rotting out every three years, it is a north corner. The house has an odd placement on the lot. Anyways, I decided to pick up some 12 X 7 1/4 inch Hardie board planks. I primed them and painted them, then installed them. That was about 12 years ago. They look like the day I installed them. As they do not match the wood lap siding, I did that whole end of the house. End each plank on a stud and they will stay firmly in place. They recently went through Hurricane Irma here in Florida and did just fine. I enjoy these videos, Very Much. They keep me up on code on new products I might not have known, if I did not frequent this channel.

Hi Matt, Like your shows and very informative. Its 2021 in horizon and am sure there are lot of new siding choices now with new technologies. One thing would like to see on your show is difference between vinyl which is widely used here in NE and other siding materials. Most of the towns here has either vinyl or stucco in mid range to high end. For those builders and home owners building homes traditionally would be a helpful comparison as they can offer more options

Great products from this years IBS. Definitely nothing "irritable" there! My personal opinion is the Boral -Versetta Stone looks more natural than the CertainTeed stone. But interesting how they have similar fastening methods. I like how the science approach is catching on with the product developers. I have three houses on the schedule to build this year and will be definitely utilizing some of the highlighted products. Thanks for the continued great videos! - Wally

Matt - either you haven't been to a home show for the past several years or you totally missed this in the past. They meaning Boral & CertainTeed have been promoting this crap at least since 2012 it was already featured at previous builder shows in 2012 and 2013. Your suppose to be providing us with new and innovative design and installation practices. As a masonry contractor - these manufactures are changing their tune when it comes to installation practice. Thanks to you, bringing awareness to the problems with cladding and exterior moisture problems behind the typical paper, lath and scratch coat substrate, it appears that a lot of installed systems are failing because of the ICBO practices brought into play and required by manufacturers. The rain curtain concept should be mandatory for good ole James Hardie siding as well. Each peace of 8" cedar mill lap siding that gets nailed onto a wall with either tyvek or felt paper creates a water dam every 8". Have you removed any lap siding lately?? the moisture caught behind the material is growing problem. The entire installation process needs to follow your building science concept with vertical battens / nailers installed at least every 12" allowing for that moisture plane you have talked about. Appreciate your info as always. But appears you are not covering the entire shows in the past by bringing outdated technology already in place.

Perhaps I have a stupid question and I admit lack of experience with “rain screening” but is there any way insects could use this space for a very protected nest?
@MIKEKELLEY120007 жыл бұрын
Mike, I'm from Montana and had never heard of rain screen until I started watching Matt's videos. I remember seeing one of his where he discussed keeping bugs out. I believe he blocks the bottom with screen. This guy has a trim piece that does the job: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sH3SgpKqhpyajqs
@dfgyuhdd7 жыл бұрын
The most economical way to deal with this is to run a ribbon of screen (yes, regular fiberglass screen) that laps a few inches below your siding benchmark prior to furring strip install. After furring strip install (always vertical) you fold those few inches up and tack them over the furring strip with a stapler. Then run your starter strip for siding and proceed as usual.
@bosatsu767 жыл бұрын
Insects need homes too... If they're not chewing up the house, what's wrong with a little sharing... Maybe not wasp nests everywhere... But spiders, mason bees, and others are actually our friends.'
@dfgyuhdd7 жыл бұрын
The problem with accepting some insects in but not others is that you need to establish a comprehensive bug immigration policy and the particulars of that policy will inevitably hurt the feelings of some bugs who believe themselves to be qualified to nest within the walls of home. Just prepare to fight some extremely lengthy and costly legal battles if you choose to go that route, that's all.

The different types of Stone veneers look nice, but by placing Stone veneers along the foundation, doesn't this promote the possibility of termites finding their way into your home ? I have always heard that a space of 4 to 8 inches from ground to the bottom of the siding is best to avoid the problem and also let you to be able to see any termite tunnels should they start. I live in Florida so termites are a problem. Is their a way to avoid termites and still use these products other than chemicals ? Thanks.

LOVE the video. Great info especially the hardiplank stuff, but ... that Boral True Exterior stuff seems like a ready made train wreck. You run the rain down interior channel which works fine as long it drains freely but as soon as anything blocks the exit there will be pressure against the tyvec. Also, it doesn't seem like it would breath. There's a reason siding drains from the interior to the exterior in short laps.

My concern about the Stonefacade is the apparent need for trim at all corners. Trim cutting through stone, as on that display, looks ridiculous regardless of how modern or traditional the build is. I would like to see more aesthetic improvements for windows in the near future, especially more depth in the sashes and a deeper installation into the wall, and more possibilities for simulated divided lights (as opposed to grill-in-glass, which I HATE WITH A PASSION). New windows today tend to look way too flat on the house, which really irks me. It's depth and shadows that give character to a work of architecture.

See SmartStone Systems and their EcoSmart Stone, an "all in one insulated modular cladding system” that delivers everything in one system/product. 1. Zero maintenance natural stone, (REAL that is, not fake or faux) plus large format porcelain and clay brick faced panels. (Lasts a lifetime, no fading) 2. Super lightweight at circa 2lbs per square foot with direct to stud mechanical fixing. (No wet mortar mess or frost holdups) 3. Up to 3 times faster installation than typical brick and stone veneer wet-fix mortar installations. (Saves lots of time/money) 4. Fully insulated thermally to R-23 without any other in wall insulation. (Meets minimum standards in most states) 5. A cavity fixing system that allows full moisture drainage to protect timber frameworks. (No future costly rot to potentially deal with) 6. No expensive specialist stone masons required. (Our simple system means most competent carpenters can install) See more docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/1c9833_e3f9574cd0f34363832d5dbd73ed79ef.pdf smartstonesystems.com

I live in Norway, climate is quite rough for wooden houses but there are many and many of wooden houses with wooden siding.. And you know - looks great (its real thing...no plastic, no duplicate - just real wood), and lasts very long... My own house is almost 50 years old... I replaced all siding, not becouse it was rotten.. (the siding was in good condition), but I wanted to have a new fresh look on the house.. Every material will need maintenance if you want it to last.. so with good maintenance wooden exterior could last decades.... And everything you need is just - wash your exterior walls once in 3 years and repaint it once in +/- 10 years.... Not so scary at all.. :)
