WhatsApp vs Telegram vs Signal: Which is the BEST?!

WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal; three of the most popular secure and private messaging platforms for your digital devices, allowing you to communicate with your friends and family in secret. How do they stack up against each other, and what makes one better than the other for your needs? Will they give you an anonymous experience?

A) Telegram is FOSS and utilizes FOSS encryption, though it’s still not quite as proven as Signal’s Encryption.
B) Telegram does have E2EE but it’s not a default and is restricted to secret chats.
C) The Privacy/Security “Colors” at the end are an over-simplification and shouldn’t be taken too seriously. They are just representations of some pros/cons of each provider.
Some attributes of each service I take a look at are encryption methods, features usage and usability, as well as privacy concerns like requiring a phone number or collection of data and/or metadata. I also give the pros and cons to each service and what person it's geared towards to simplify your decision.

Waiting for the 2021 update .. but I for one not bothered much by the sharing of my metadata. And I think the only new thing is that now it's explicit in the terms of service. Anecdotally I remember a couple years ago I was chatting in WhatsApp web about using a SDR to receive aircrafts signals, sharing links and such, and surprise: the following days I started to see ads for that in my Facebook feed. A little creepy, but mostly useful. Certainly better than generic non-targeted ads. And now KZbin knows too (just kidding, KZbin already knew) In order to be more useful, your assistant (human or artificial) need to know your routine, likes and dislikes, who you talk to and where yo talk from. I rather have a faceless algorithm to know me than a person subject to moods and prejudice.

You are so wrong about comparing Telegram and WhatsApp, which makes me wonder if you ever used Telegram. It encrypts messages by default but it's not end to end. This is necessary for it's awesome sync between devices. You can pause your chat on your PC and immediately continue on your phone with all your chat history syncing between all your devices. With end to end encryption this is simply not possible. With Telegram you can have groups with up to 10000 members. Take that WhatsApp! Third, on Telegram you can chat without revealing your phone number to anyone which is not case for WhatsApp

Didn't expand on "End to End" but that's still a concern, thanks for point that out. Remember that security and privacy are two entirely different games, and WhatsApp implements open source end-to-end encryption by default, making it by default a more secure service than Telegram. Privacy is another problem though, I would never trust Whatsapp to not collect metadata on users.

I like Telegram as I can use it in my PC independently without mobile phone being online, plus can delete and edit messages any time, save stuffs without sending it to anyone. I can search for channels and watch/read contents without subscription. I can download movies from channels. Group size is big and control features are many. I can get any old message and attachments, even after many years. It is very stable compared to WA.

Signal is great for people who don't care about crap like stickers and simply want a secure way to communicate. In other words, most adults. I love it. I only wish more people used it. It's always important to remember that Signal sends encrypted messages as well as traditional messages. Unless the other person is also using Signal the messages will be unencrypted, unsecured SMS or MMS.

I am a security professional - we need to take our privacy far more seriously. The lie that your name and information are somehow a digital key separating the two is quite foolharty in my professional opinion. I like the features of Telegram most - specifically the 2X speed playback of video messages that others send. Once you try that (I first saw this with the Marco Polo app) you will NOT be able to live without it. Especially when getting those messages from that one or two people who drone on or monologue. When MarcoPolo butchered the features on their app our whole family moved to Telegram, and now I like it better.

Tbh Telegram has far more features than all of those, you can customize the color of every single sspect of the UI, thousands of animated stickers that are specifically made for telegram, you can have up to 100,000 people in your group, you can send an entire movie or any file up to 2 GB to your friends and family, unlike whatsapp where you can only send up to 16 MB for a video.

You have to study more before doing videos, you lied in a lot of points, you confused encryption with e2e encryption, you said that in features WhatsApp is similar to telegram (???) And the fact thas WhatsApp have e2e encription is useless when it have 2 known backdoors, (it can change encription keys and add listeners to groups) In security, privacy and features Telegram is better than whatsapp, but in security, signal is better. The only thing i miss in Telegram is e2e group chats, that's the reason signal is better in that point (but not WhatsApp)

Thank you very much for your comparison. Telegram and WhatsApp are both banned in China. Signal is the one I can use without VPN. If you buy a China national wide, or so called domestic version of cellphone running android, you are confined to only use WeChat . Sometimes I call these domestic android cellphone WeChat phone. WeChat is known as their unsecurity and slow response speed and unoptimized voice and video call qualities. I currently only use wechat as colleague chat for company business, phone pay and viewing public channels delivered by my interested companies.

you didn t mention that whatsapp prompts you every now and then to agree to backup to google ALL your chats...NOT ENCRYPTED end to end. you don t do it? get ready to loose all your chats everytime you change phone :) that s a big point against privacy imho

I use whatsapp bcoz I have no choice, All my friends and classmates and later on my workmates and my family members all use whatsapp, so I need to use whatsapp to be in touch with them, very very few of them has telegram and none of the has signal, in fact, this is the first time I'm hearing about it

Not that I know of. Everything requires both ends to use proper encryption or else the entire encryption is broken. You’re as secure as your weakest link, so you’re wasting your time. There is Silence SMS which will encrypt SMS messages, but this still requires two people to use Silence.

The best we've got for the easiest integration is Signal, where you can send them an invite link for the non tech savvy person to click and easy enough to walk them through to click a few more to get it up and running. It takes two to tango and it's just the nature of how it works ... only to have one side encrypted is unrealistic, unless the default platform (which it does not have) is built to have this feature.

I have a problem with Signal's claim, how do you know that your metadata is deleted frequently on their servers? To me, if you can't verify that, you should treat it as if they are not delete them.

I've used both WhatsApp and Telegram before with my preference being WhatsApp. That being said I also use NordVPN and to save money on bills, a prepaid cell phone. A relative of mine uses WhatsApp presently, but absolutely refuses to input their real name anywhere on the Internet using a name they prefer to their legal one instead. Their cell phone is a line on an account of a different person so their name shows up nowhere on the bill. Also their cell phone was bought as a gift in cash, so really any metadata collected wouldn't be accurate because of those above actions taken. Additionally, they don't have any social media accounts and use anonymous search engines on the few searches they do. As for me, I'm not a part of social media either not interested in such things only using the internet to watch videos here on KZbin not even going on email, websites, or search engines at all in fact. As far as subscription purchases, apart from using anonymous methods of payment, requests for subscription birthday or holiday gifts is always helpful as well, and often a more affordable alternative to gifts in general.
