Should you choose Apple or Google when it comes to privacy and security on your mobile device? There's one part of this argument that most people tend to ignore. The answer isn't what you think (and no, I'm not saying a Linux-based alternative is the solution!).

The debate between iPhone and Android devices is honestly hard to settle and it usually comes down to subjective preference. So whether you're an iPhone or android user, the strength of your privacy and security ultimately comes down to how much of your data is stored in these devices. In this video, Josh and Pete Matheson walked you through the differences of iOS and android when it comes to privacy and security.

Hey this isnt related to this video but your video about setting up a google authenticator app might be misinforming people. KZbin use to have a way to put in text boxes on the video to tell a viewer this info is out of date. If you really think google authenticator is insecure you should take that video down or at least put a warning somehow.

if you using samsung secure folder or just using 256K AES encryption in a seperate IOS app, then unless you physically unlock those files then no once can get access to them. i think this video whilst informative is very high level. there are many things you can do apart from app permissions to secure your data. In general if you know what your doing both android and Ios can be very secure devices.

answer for 99.9% of the population: it doesn't matter.. use common sense. if you put sensitive data on a phone or any device, secure it according to its sensitivity, whether it be password protection, encryption, etc. and if it's that sensitive that you even worry about it after that, then don't put it on any device or at least not one connected to any network whatsoever. what is YOUR threat model? if you're spending your time worrying and your situation is such that nobody really cares about you or your personal info (aside from marketers and fraudsters), then you're spending precious moments of your time trying to safeguard things for no good reason and wasting your life away doing it, while also enduring the inconveniences that come from doing it.

@@Jane_Moss I now use a Pixel 6, since Best Buy recently had the TMobile model as an upgrade for $200 without any contract. Had it unlocked and installed GrapheneOS on it. It doesn't install unnecessary apps I don't use, lets me have a bit more control privacy and security settings, and feels less invasive. I have separate user profiles for everyday tasks (web browsing, youtube using a 3rd party app that bypasses the ads, etc.) and for banking. But that's a personal choice to go through those hoops. It works well for me so far. It's not better than an iPhone 13/14 Pro Max or Samsung S22 Ultra, but it does what I need out of a phone while paying as little as possible. But for most people, I would just go with an iPhone honestly. I just wanted a little more control over certain things and be not as locked into Apple's ecosystem. But iPhone does pretty good when it comes to security and privacy while not to the point of being inconvenient.

I'm starting to question Apple's honesty around privacy. I pay for Apple One Priemer and have noticed targeted ads in their News App and in the Apple TV app. Plus Google is the default search engine in Safari. It's a financial benefit to Apple in the "Partnership" with Google. I also question whether or not Apple is making money off of our biometrics via the Apple Watch. Apple claims our health data is private, but it's customers can opt into research. My guess is that Apple isn't giving that information away for free. It's pure speculation, but they're in the business to make money and they collect a TON of telemetry data on us. From biometrics, to what apps you use the most, to where you are going. Again, I don't think Apple is as forthcoming as they portray themselves to be.
@JonathanCentifanto

The fact that Apple was going full steam ahead with the ICloud photo scanning and only stopped when it got leaked, tells me that they aren't as invested in your security as they claim. Also, the fact that they force users to use unencrypted SMS instead of encrypted RCS when messaging non-iOS devices is super ironic. I'm of the opinion that Android and iOS are pretty much equally secure if you are smart with your device.

Ive always been an Android phone user because I enjoy the options of customizing. Youre able to change more, widgets, and more security by using my VPNs with little interference. Youre able to turn off alot of the tracking and logging on your google account. iPhones are def great for people who dont like to play around with tech...From the little amount ive used of my friends iPhone devices I feel like you're confined to a specific space. Not bashing iPhone because they're great phones for certain users. Just like Android better

When I had to take the leap from my Blackberry to more common smartphones, I initially went for the Blackberry Priv. But that (like all Android phones) forced me to sign up to Gmail. I had that phone for a few years until it started flaking out on me, and then I got a Realme Pro 3. I might have to take a plunge into the Apple cult when that phone does on me. As other commenters said, the Google model for earning money is ADS, ADS and more ADS. To increase their efficency, Google would of course have to crawl everything that is on my phone. And since Gmail is the logon for this, they already have that option. That is why I have to drag myself kicking and screaming into iOs when my time is up...
@robmalcolm8042
@robmalcolm8042 Жыл бұрын
You’ll kick and scream your way out ios as well when you realize it’s a glorified subscription device. To get anything out of it you need to spend tons on top of what you already pay monthly for your bill. Really truthfully the design of iOS is a better os than android but apple uses that in a wrongful way by making you use proprietary this proprietary that. Less compatibility in certain cases. The privacy part is great but how true that is isn’t known since who knows what apple actually knows about you since they still have access to your information in some way just not like google does. Using the 13 for months it’s a good phone but I still use my old androids as they are more fun emulators are amazing and let me have time to game older systems (don’t have time for my ps4 anymore with family and work and barely have time for the switch since it’s big to take around) so android emulation helps a lot and iphone emulation is very hard to do and keep stabile without it not working eventually if you don’t use altstore Carefully plus much more options on android like 3ds and ps2 and even switch emulation now

I’m an iOS user all the way. The integration across the ecosystem is amazing. I feel like Apple has an honest interest in maintaining user privacy and don’t mind that they use that as a selling point. I’ve had Android phones in the past. They provided a good experience. However, Google is in the business of knowing user data to provide a personalized ad experience, since the vast majority of Google products are ad supported. Google is in the ad business, and for that to succeed they need to know user data. Now, my trust level is higher with Google than it is with, say, Facebook, but my trust level with Apple is higher than with Google. Usually I’m all about Linux, and I use Linux on daily basis, but I don’t want to tinker with my smartphone like I do with my desktop or laptop, so I stick with iOS.

I'm team Apple all the way as far as privacy and security goes for several reasons. I recall that several years ago the government tried to coerce Apple into building a backdoor "master key" that can access any device at any time. Apple fought back saying that the would compromise a key feature of their products. Also, most secure data is not on Apple servers but kept on the phone. Google hands over customer data, it seems, to anyone at any time for any reason. Also, I tried an interesting experiment where a friend has a Galaxy phone and it we put in to the table next to an iPhone both with the lock screen on. Then we started talking about an obscure subject like "Gee I'd really like to go on an Alaska cruise" and we said it 4-5 times. Guess what he started seeing in his feed too after? Adverts to Alaska cruises. So while the Android world has much more innovative hardware (yes I've been tempted), I wouldn't touch any of them given the risks.

For me it's an easy decision because with Google *YOU* are the product, they have to collect your data, sell/share it and make money that way. Apple makes its money by selling hardware, services and taking a generous cut from app sales, not by selling its users’ data or running ads. Thing is though, it's YOUR choice, no-one is forcing you to use either.

This is a fallacy. Apple just introduced more ads to Apple products and apps. They're slowly rolling out more and more. Most people just arent actually paying attention or reading the user agreements.

I am using /e/OS from the e-foundation. This is a de-googled android version based on LineageOS. I have selected this as it comes with its own eco-system like an app store in which you cab download apps anonymously. In the end it is all about trust in which one thing is clear for me... I don't 'trust' google.. Really happy with the performance of eos as battery lifetime increases from a single day to multiple days!! I can only conclude that there are way less processes running in the background doing something with my data.. One significant drawback is that apps like netflix or disney+ do not stream content anymore as I have rooted the device..

I do so many things on my phone, over using my lap top or pad, including paying some of my bills and banking. I have been an apple user and an android user, and I will never, EVER go back to android. Sorry for me it’s 🍎 wall of steel iOS system.🤷🏻‍♀️ Security is BIG for me. In this day and age, with social media and how advanced we are on the Internet you are absolutely nuts if security is not the top of your concern, but for some people it’s actually not. I guess it depends on what you’re doing on your phone. If you’re looking for customization, gaming, etc. then sure, there’s more of that on android, so I guess security is not that big of a deal for you; most likely you’re using third-party apps anyway. I have an apple 15+ and I absolutely love it❤ I have it customized with pictures, daily widgets, and apps that I use, and it gets the job done for me, as far as phone use, and what I need it for. In my opinion, Samsung can be the biggest and the best but if someone hacks into your phone and steals your identity or whatever they’re looking for than all that customization, and everything else, is pointless. Listen, no one can guarantee 100% security, not even Apple, but if it’s between the two, I’ll take my chances with Apple any day.

I pick Android as the lesser evil. I do envy iPhone users some of the privacy features, but Apple keeps making things needlessly hard to do when they really shouldn't be. Some of their other decisions also annoy me, like the lightning port or their active efforts to make their devices unrepairable.

The thing that gets me is, "Why does everyone keep comparing Android to iPhone?" IPhone is a piece of hardware and the Android is software. So if you're going to compare the iPhone to something compare it correctly to something like Samsung s23 or just the Samsung mobile. Going to go ahead and break it to you though. If you look at the CVE on this you will find that in Samsungs history they have about 400 total vulns and iPhone has some 3000. Rounded up on both. Android is just the starting point for the device. Because it is open source the companies can do whatever they want to increase the security of the device. Just because a hack works on the Pixel does not mean it will work on the Samsung and vice versa.

In my opinion, iOS takes the cake in both categories. This is especially true since after this video was made, only about a month ago actually, Apple in fact decided to go back on the CSAM detection that you talk about in this video; a huge win for privacy crew. For me personally, I became a first time iPhone owner (actually the first Apple product I've ever purchased) as of the 15 Pro, after being Android ONLY since the original Motorola Droid!

I consider iPhone to be far less secure for two reasons. 1 - Apple has proven they can change their mind at a notice. Gone is the Apple who refused to unlock a phone for the FBI. Now Apple willingly shut out apps during the Hong Kong protests at China's request. And Apple continues to allow China access to and control over apps. These things happened AFTER people already owned iphones over there. So they bought something they thought was secure, and then Apple just undoes it. Distgusting. 2 - Apple considered scanning local devices for illegal pictures. I don't give a shit what the crime was they were thinking of scanning for, the terrifying thing is that they considered it at all. Once again, just like above, people who had bought a device would have suddenly had a different device than the one they bought just because Apple changed their minds about something. Think of the fucking precedent that would have set. First they scan for CSAM, next thing you know it thanks to AI and image recognition technology they also scan your photos for firearms, pirated movies, music, drugs, you fucking name it. Hell, now that your device is basically a snitch spy tool why not fucking use Apple maps to report you to the police if you run a red light or jay walk? So ya, if you think Apple is secure you aren't Chinese lmao. Apple is only as secure as mass public sentiment. If people in the future become more ok with Apple devices reporting you for crimes, then suddenly they are a police state tool. The only reason Apple changed their minds about the scanning was because of the pushback. So ya, no idea how you could be delusional enough to think your device is secure.

Well, at the end of the day iOS is controlled by Apple, Android by Google and/or the respective manufacturer (Samsung, or whomever). So it comes down to whom do you vest your trust in. Josh went team Apple, and that transpires through the video simply by him having first-hand knowledge of Apple stuff. To be fair, he also disclosed that right at the beginning. The notion of the "Walled Garden" vs the "Three Layers" is a bit of an oversimplification, in my view. (Carriers customising the phone seems to be a US thing to me for one.); and I would have expected the term "Open Source" to be mentioned: most of Android is open-source, for example. Only the Google specific stuff and the manufacturere (e.g. Samsung) is usually proprietary, as opposed to 100% with iOS. And that gets us back to the first point: the "merchant" who ships the OS to the user (be it Apple or Google together with Samsung) are the ones who control what goes into the OS, what apps go into the store (and Google does have some challenges there), and so on. So the key is: whom do we trust?

GrapheneOS is very usable, I've even convinced 2 of my moms friends to start using it. My mom is still an iPhone user sadly. There are some pain points on GrapheneOS which can eaisly be fixed, it just requires the initial setup. Like the default messenger, keyboard, etc. Those apps all suck, install Microsoft SwiftType then disable network access so it cant phone home. Stuff like this. When I setup GrapheneOS for normies I try to make it as convenient as possible knowing they are still getting a MASSIVE privacy & security boost over stock Android, which is still better than iOS. For me security & privacy is king.
