Maybe some of it resembles Pinkerton in terms of the Weezer influence. But hell some of the incelcore songs sound damn near like it came right off bleach. I found the "Grunge could only dream of this level of cynicism" part very profound. It's like this anger has been building and building for years and then you finally explode and begin thrashing and lashing out only to find you have nothing to hit, that even at your most strong willed and passionate, there's nothing. So you stop, sink, and finally give in for any sense of feeling agency, only to still feel nothing. Fighting does nothing. Participating does nothing. Whereas grunge could eek some sense of meaning out of the solidarity of apathy, we're long past that and the novelty of admitting everything is hopeless isn't shocking or motivating, it's just met with "...and?" I want to say your worldview can't get more cynical than this, but I know for a fact that I'd be putting my foot in my mouth in only like 5 years.

I think the fact that so many people take offense to these guys is what keeps them making music. It's meant to be absurd; it's meant to make you rewind the song and listen to the lyrics again to make sure you heard them right. That's why the Pixies (one of the best bands ever, by the way) wrote so many songs involving incest and heads getting smashed. That's why Sid Vicious claimed to have killed a cat and Glenn Danzig sang about killing a baby and Death played a song about necrophilia. They're all considered classic acts now, but they were probably just as controversial in their day as NegativeXP is now, even if they didn't get the insane amount of exposure that comes with the internet.
@ajorsomething49359 ай бұрын
And just like back in the day, I think the kids like it a lot more than the adults. 13 year olds showed up to catholic school with a black sabbath sticker on their bike, and now days incelcore seems to appeal to the zoomer and alienate the millenial and older generations. I've seen so many people in their late 20s and 30s trash negative XP as if their messages are meant to be taken completely seriously and they are literally the devil. I think incelcore really appeals to the 16 to 20 year old college crowd.

Amazing video. I hope I'm not too late to make my comments. Actually I thinking the "incelcore" is more related to those late 90's hardcore bands, who could be called melodic, or "real emo" (v.g. Falling Forward, 88 Fingers Louie). Not only Sunny Day Real State, but even early Green Day material can be related to incelcore. If you see Dookie, Nimrod or Insomniac albuns the lyrics are very similar (v.g. The Grouch, Geek Stink Breath). And even some early melodic bands like Husker Du and Descendents or even some Black Flag works (v.g. Depression, Fix Me) are very relatable, as both those bands and the whole incelcore niche are talking about facing life with bits of indifference, and realize we're not playing to win, songs about feeling out of place in society, about being unable to social interaction. So, my point of view, as the name can indicate, incelcore is more like "another level" of those introspective melodic Hardcore bands than some "washed out" Grunge.

I'm someone whos established niche tends to be around the alternative emo, indie, and midwest emo genres and honestly I see a lot of parallels between the destitution of all these types of music. My favorite band is the New Jersey band The Front Bottoms and I would say a lot of their discography can be described as wistful yet mostly upbeat. Incelcore/Epunk is just far less introspective and vague about the sadness the "narrator" is talking about. It's generally angrier with a more modest sound and I very much enjoy that. It makes me feel as if I can make music that people can connect with or laugh at and ironically gives me hope. Thanks for making this video and being one of the few people who don't shit on this genres entire existence on the basis that the label it got stuck with is something people shame.

I've heard of the scott pilgrim song for quite a while now, but funny enough I don't think I've really delved into this particular genre. I will say that it does resonate with me on some level. not "literally me" levels. Im not some blackpilled incel or doomer or whatever lmao, but the common topics you hear in these types of songs has a certain rawness to it that I haven't really seen anywhere else. I do genuinely think the name "incelcore" really does fit. Not because people who make this or listen to it are literally "incels", as in more than just a label they give themselves, but because I think it perfectly encapsulates that feeling of resignation from a careless society that this genre of music tries to convey. again, you (as in the listener,) (realistically) arent actually an Incel by definition, you aren't some blackpilled misogynist with zero hope for/genuine desire to change the future, you just feel disillusioned with society as a whole, and in fact you may even want to "be the change you want to see" in some way, but whats the point in calling yourself anything else when people are just gonna disregard you as an "incel" anyways? In that regard, I genuinely think its a perfect name, and moreover why the name "e-punk" never really sat correctly with me, it just feels like giving into the people you criticized in some way, or that you let them get to you, I dunno. It'll be interesting to see which name sticks.

He’s similar size to a lot if the other big artists on spotify, yet seems to hardly be brought up in discussions on the genre. Sox is a talented guy, i like him.

Great video, but IMO you understated the influence of electronic music and 2000s “scene” revival. Artists like XO_willow don’t sound like grunge at all, being closer to hyper pop than anything, and yet were part of the MSG group and just as popular if not more so than artists like hard Christ.

Its a kind of hopeful nihilism, apathy that desires change. I think thats one of the things i like the most about the genre, the songs are about peoples and societies problems but done in a way that implies a desire to change them, some of the artists even sing so gs encouraging others or themselves to change. Its negative but in a positive way, like self reflection.

@Readuth lol nah but really those arent buzzword, maybe atmospheric progmetal is a bit of one but I can't call Iotunn's music differently than that. For dissonant death metal, look into Gorguts' discography
