What a challenge Jimmy Durante faced in trying to disguise his voice. One of the most distinctive voices ever.

I'd worked at a Massachusetts institution for the mentally & physically challenged for over 40 years, and very early in my time there (early 80s), l heard that Mr Durante once visited the residents there in the late-60s, & put on a little show in the auditorium for free. Such a kind & generous man!

Jimmy Durante was one of the kindest, nicest people in show business. He was the one that started The Jimmy Fund. He was also known for paying his band their full pay just to practice one day out of the week when they didn't have gigs. That money came out of Jimmy's own money. He didn't want his band to go hungry between gigs. Truly a magnificent man!!!

Hey, Randy - Durante and my grandfather were difficult to tell apart - - from their similar sense of humor, and particularly due to the prominent proboscis on each of them! My Grandpa Chris would say farewell to Grandma each morning with one of these lines: "Hey Josie, take your fat can to the butcher's! (during the time when household fat was saved and used in the war effort). "Hey Josie - See ya later in the pigpen. Wear your hat so I'll know ya!" Grandpa Chris had an errand once that involved him picking up a formal photo portrait of his mother-in-law (Grandma Josie's mom), and a new toilet seat. Grandma opened the package to find her mother's face framed in the new toilet lid. Once during a formal dinner given at their home, Grandpa went into the kitchen to slice some more roast beef. While in the kitchen, he relieved himself of some troublesome air loudly enough that not only the diners noticed, but probably some neighbors as well. Grandma was thoroughly embarrassed (and ticked), but decided to ignore him, until he popped his head through the swinging kitchen door and announced "If I tuned it up, I could play the Star Spangled Banner!" Grandma was very proud of her famous relation, Francis Scott Key, and Grandpa never missed a chance to rib her about it.

When my husband died and I went through his pile of letters, I found one from Jimmy Durante to him, hand-written and with his home return address. My husband was not famous but in show business in the 60s and 70s and somehow he and Durante knew each other. The letter is a "how you doing - I'm going to be in Reno when you are" letter. A gem, like the man was.

Doesn’t matter - the kid was still just 14 when their Dad died. Orphans don’t distinguish between an adoptive dad and a bio dad. It’s not fair to the kid to have an elderly dad who’s not going to probably be around long.

Mc Hobbit: I'm sure Mr. Durante was still quite "robust" at 72, but he and his beloved wife "Margie" adopted their little CeCe. There's a wonderful story from his biography which relates when Jimmy Durante turned 75 (in 1968) a big celebration was planned for him in Las Vegas (where he often headlined). A huge birthday cake was brought out to great cheers and suddenly little CeCe (to the surprise of all) popped right out of the cake. Tears of joy streamed down her Dad's face (who thought CeCe was home in bed). I'm sure it was something Mr. Durante never forgot.

Thank you so much for this entire collection of WML. Thanx for the nostalgia trip. Thanx for including the ads. Thanx for letting me relive many happy tv hours.And especially for this ep. Three of my favorite guys, all together in the same show. Jimmy, Bobby and John. I used to sneak downstairs or down the hall after my bedtime if I heard Jimmy on tv. My folks knew I loved him, so they let me stay up till his show or guest segment was over. Inkadinkadoo, darling man. Bobby, I loved since I first saw him on Bandstand, and first heard him on radio. Bless him for his work with the Heart Fund. John, I liked his smile, and he had dimples like me. He always seemed to have such a good time on the show, and he always had a devilish glint in his eyes when he was doubletalking the panel out of their guess. I was born in 1949, and my folks and both sets of grandparents always watched WML. I didn't always get what everyone was saying back then, but I enjoyed the show. lissalives Smoot Me too. He's not to everyone's taste evidently (many seem to suggest he's a bighead....I rarely see anything of the sort!) but I feel I can see his character pretty well. To me he has a big warm heart and has showed evidence of being an emotional guy, a sentimental guy too and also had such respect and awe for those with talent whom he spent so much time with. He was not so self-obsessed while part of a community of rather self-obsessed people. I somehow feel he would be a great conversationalist on all manner of topics but also he would be thoughtful and sincere with it. Yes he's old-fashioned even for 1965!! Puts women on a pedestal but hey....I'm a man and I do too!! Yep like you....I like Bennett. Out of all the regular panellists he would be the one I'd have liked to meet.

I'm loving all these What's My Line? episodes. Have probably watched and re-watched them a few times. My favorites are probably the Fred Allen era, but I like them all. I was just wondering this moment why John asks the women whether the are Miss or Mrs, but Dorothy and Arlene have "Miss" in front of their surnames on the panel board, when they are both married. Though, of course, I do like when John refers to them as "Miss Arlene" or "Miss Kilgallen".
@MrThesper

Dorothy and Arlene are both using their unmarried names, hence the Miss.
@jazzmanchgo
@jazzmanchgo 3 жыл бұрын
Arlene Francis' husband's name was Martin Gabel; her actual birth name was Arlene Francis Kazanjian. Dorothy Kilgallen's husband was Richard Kolmar; Kilgallen was her maiden name. Then, as now, it was the courtesy for actresses and other female celebrities to be referred to as "Miss" So-and-So, at least unless they used their husband's name as their professional surname (which most didn't do, and most don't do today, either).

Because I have too much time on my hands, I occasionally Google the names of the (non-mystery) challengers to see if I can find any more about what happened to them after appearing on the show. There is an obituary from April 6, 2014, for a Nell Duncan of West Palm Beach. She was 78 when she died, so it could be the first challenger on this episode. Or not, and I completely wasted time.
