I am amazed at the number of actors, mostly men, who can imitate other actors so well. I had no idea that Robert Wagner was that talented. Love. this. show!

I agree she looked particularly well made-up in this episode and the subsequent shows around this time! I wonder if it had anything to do with her starring in "Once More With Feeling" at the time. WML was filmed on Sunday nights, I believe, so she would have done a matinee earlier that day. Perhaps she kept the makeup on she had worn onstage earlier that day?

So much for John's experiment to allow the audience to play along at home with the last challenger. Apparently someone on the WML staff didn't get the memo. As I recall, in the earliest days of WML, there were some rounds in which the audience had the opportunity to play along with the panel. So this wasn't exactly a novel experiment.

The goose calls made by the second contestant, Bob Lentz, sound authentic to me, but they don't fool the "Merlin" smartphone app from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. This app can identify hundreds of birds using either photographs of the birds or the sounds of their calls. The photo and sound identification systems are entirely separate. I tested the sound identification feature it on a recording that I made of geese in a nearby park, and the app identified the birds in a few seconds. But when I played Mr. Lentz's call, the app said, "Merlin has no matches." Apparently there are subtle features of bird calls that we do not notice.

“Let’s let the audience at home play along, too.” I’ve been meaning to ask if anyone averts their eyes when the “line” is shown and plays along. I tried it a few times, but I quickly learned that it’s much more fun to watch when you know the profession. All those unintentional double-entendres that the panelists make only work if we’re in on the joke! So I, for one, am glad that WML never let the home audience play along.

Bob Sewvello Most home TV sets back then had a lot of overscan: in other words, the margins of the image were outside the face of the picture tube. In the vacuum tube era of analog video, circuitry had to be simple to make sets affordable. One effect was that the size of the image would vary with the power line voltage, which fluctuates during the day. (We don't notice this much today because most of our gear has inexpensive integrated circuit voltage regulators.) If the set was adjusted so that the entire image just filled the screen at normal voltage, then when voltage was lower, you'd see black edges at the top, bottom, and sides of the picture tube. Most customers didn't like the look of that (letterboxing hadn't been invented yet), and so TV servicemen would typically adjust the set for overscan at average line voltage. Knowing this, TV directors wouldn't put important parts of the image at the very edges of the frame. We see those edges here and now because these kinescopes were filmed from high quality studio monitors which probably did have expensive voltage regulation circuitry, and because the full image of the kinescope frames was scanned in making the transfer to modern digital video.
