By 1961 Harpo was a pretty sick man. He supposedly suffered from constant angina although you could never tell it from the looks of things here. He died in 1964 while undergoing the then new procedure called "Coronary Bypass " surgery in the hopes of relieving his angina pains.

John Daly was one of the few people in the 1950s who worked on all three networks at the same time. In 1955, he was the host of "What's My Line?" on CBS, the head of the news department and nightly anchor on ABC's evening news program, and the host of "Who Said That?" on NBC, and he made frequent appearances in other roles on NBC and CBS.

Harpo appeared at a theatre in Glasgow, Scotland to a very appreciative audience. A Glasgow audience is the hardest in the world to play to. At the end of the first week Harpo came out to thank the audience for their overwhelming reception. Only thing is Harpo doesn't talk, he broke character. The audience went crazy, and Harpo who was to play another week didn't. They had to close the theatre to make repairs to the damage the audience had made.

Harpo did a brief guest shot on YBYL around this time, possibly that's what you're thinking of? What's My Line? Don't let that get to you. So many young people are very disconnected with the humor we understood in simpler times. I was never a big fan of the Marx Brothers, even as fighting with the autocorrect on my mobile device so often plays out like one of their acts. (Coincidence, I'm sure, despite my advanced age, or maybe revenge.) Although I find it refreshing to see even people whom I admittedly never admired, featured again as though I've been transported back in time to re-experience it ... I can't blame younger people for not "getting it." That's for "downvotes". Now, if they were to make nasty comments, that would be another thing. I thank you for your efforts, which seem Herculean to me. Your every post is a promise of a leisurely stroll through my more cherished memories.

May 3, 1961 was supposed to be the day for Alan Shepard to make the first ever flight into space on Freedom 7. I believe it was scrubbed after a few hours of waiting in the early morning due to bad weather (back then, there had to be pristine conditions to monitor a launch to watch the rocket in case of problems). This segment of TODAY aired in the 8-9am Eastern Daylight Saving Time period.

In late 1960, John Daly abruptly resigned from ABC News, saying it was over a decision the network made to delay the start of their election night coverage. But I've read that he knew ABC was looking to replace him. Daly still had WML which paid well for what little time it took. He also took "free lace" jobs (we'd call them "gigs" today) such as substituting for Dave Garroway on Today. He was hoping to get the job permanently when Garroway left the show in 1962 but NBC went with Hugh Downs instead.

To bad Harpo was never a guest on What's My Line?. He could have fooled the blindfolded panel in more than one way, but the audience would have to be prepped beforehand not to gasp. Could have just used his normal voice or use other props to answer as he couldn't "speak".
