I had the same thing with the epidural not working well with my first. And then with my second, he came so fast they weren't going to give me one (contractions started at 4 am, was 7 cm by 7 am, he was born by 10 am). But, he wouldn't come out with all my pushing and they somehow were able to get me the epidural fully dilated and it WORKED. It was great!

My third delivery was an induction! Never had to do that before. I have found the transition from 2 to 3 the hardest! We are outnumbered and I don't have enough hands. wouldn't change it for the word though.
