If he doesn't play with Shaq he probably doesn't play in the middle of his prime with Smuch Parker, Luke Walton, and Kwame in the starting line up. If he doesn't play with Shaq he possibly has 3 or 4 rings, 3 or 4 finals mvps, 2 or 3 reg season MVPs, and most points ever. He'd be higher in this list in that scenario.
@csb94342 жыл бұрын
@@xcwilliams7980 no lol. Kobe wasn't in his prime at that point and definitely wasn't winning any of those rings without another all-time great on his team, and no reason he would've won more MVPs either--if anything Shaq would've been winning them on a different team since he was the better player at the time. he also definitely would not have caught Kareem--there's no way he would've averaged 8 more ppg over those 8 seasons if Shaq wasn't there. playing with Shaq 100% gives Kobe a boost because of their team success, not a hindrance.

He is one of TWELVE players to win back-to-back MVP awards. In playoff time, Tim Duncan is one of only FOUR players to finish in top 10 for playoff wins, points, rebounds, free throws, and blocks. He is one of only NINE players to NEVER miss the playoffs in his entire career. In the span of his career, the Spurs had the highest winning percentage of ANY team in ANY sport. He is the ONLY player in NBA history to have 18-straight 50+ win seasons. He, as an individual, has more 50 win seasons than 26 ENTIRE TEAMS. He is the ONLY player in NBA history to start and win a championship in three different decades.

Kobe> Duncan 1)Duncan is an all time great defender for his position and Kobe is an all time great defender for his position but Kobe is miles ahead of Duncan offensively. Despite Kobe demanding more defensive coverage/attention, and shooting almost 50% more than Duncan they have almost identical career TS%…. Kobe also was a higher usage player but has a lower career Turnover% 2) When u compare them in the same era Kobe was more dominated. In the 00’s Kobe went to 7 Finals (5-2) on 2 completely different rosters while also having a complete rebuild in the middle. Kobe 4-1 All time when they met in their primes in the playoffs w/ Kobe almost always torching the Spurs as the best player in the series 3) While both were actually playing in 00’s and early 10’s majority of people had Kobe>Duncan…. I don’t get how that changes years later when both haven’t played another game

You can’t just say “well they’re both all time great defenders” like it’s not an ocean sized gap between them. He’s also THE best defender ever, maybe worth putting that over “an all time great” lol. Timmy was leagues above Kobe defensively, took over games even on that end of the court. Kobe could shoot better and shot a lot more often than Timmy, but Timmy was ultra consistent in the playoffs and through his career. Ofc Kobe scores more taking 5-15 extra shots per game than him on much worse efficiency 🤣 Rebounding and blocks are obv not a fair comparison, but assists only being 1.7 different is kinda suspect.

What matters is how they actually played. By the 1st chip (00’) a 21 yr old Kobe was already being considered as the best 2 way SG in the NBA. LeBron in 2008-2010 might've been the better player statistically, but not overall. 2011 finals showed he wasn't mentally ready to lead a team to a championship yet. Same with Giannis in 2018 - statistically better than everyone but not over the hump yet.

Yes! exactly the comparison i was looking for. Lebron 2007-2010 was Giannis 2017-2020. Except Giannis succeded in 2021 when Lebron brainfarted in 2011. Also not only his fault, the Mavs are always a good defensive team and prepared defensive schemes that were entirely new, focused on pacing and timing when during the post-handcheck era until then, defense was mostly spacing. Everybody copied them after that, but they had really clever defenders.

Kobe over Duncan for the main fact that he navigated a career of different lineups and different coaches and still won the same amount of titles as Timmy with a career that was arguably better and one where he elevated his team more. Debates about which of the two was actually better are always gonna be there but the consistency provided them should always be looked at here. Duncan had Manu, TP and Pop for almost his whole career and you could credit the consistency of that Spurs core as a huge reason why they were always a contender and why their title window was open for as long as it was. But on the flip side, you could even make this argument that the Spurs should have won more the way their core was kept together all those years. Same system, same key guys your whole career makes it less taxing to have to relearn and adjust every season. My personal reason why I can't put Duncan over Kobe in any list.
@12gark2 жыл бұрын
Kobe had a lot of different teams, but won always with the same coach, and with 2 main Co-star (and Kobe was second star in Shaq era). He never won without Jackson. So at the end, Duncan won with 2 different teams (the Duncan-Robinson twin Tower, and the Duncan-Parker-Ginobili), same coach and was arguably the best player each and every year. So not, Duncan > Kobe, even if it is close.
@jzam2 жыл бұрын
@@12gark I get your point about him winning with the same coach. But I think that just further reinforces my point about the consistency of the Spurs' core helping Duncan's career. That familiarity with Pop, Manu and TP over almost 20 seasons for Tim helped him and his team always be in the hunt. They were always somewhat contenders in the west cos of that core. And to your point, when Kobe finally got Phil back and got back into a system he knew, the familiarity helped him win two more. Kobe had to navigate through lulls, bad teams and bad coaches especially in between title 3 & 4. You could argue that in the years Kobe had Phil (aka the consistency and familiarity that Tim had with his Spurs core his whole career) Kobe won better. Kobe had Phil for 11 years and went to the finals 7 times with a 5-2 record. Tim had Pop his whole career, and got to the finals 6 times with a 5-1 record, Tony and Manu being with them in the last 5 trips.
@12gark2 жыл бұрын
@@jzam yes, but I can put a counter argument to that: Kobe's inability to deal with other legends' ego is the reason why he didn't had the consistency of the Spurs. It's easy to say "yeah but he didn't always had Phil and Shaq", but the reality is that he went to the front office asking for a new coach, and basically fought with Shaq until it was a "him or me" situation. People always talk about the good side of "mamba mentality", but mamba mentality literally wore him and everyone around him down. Fair and square, you have to love Kobe with the full package: the iconic game winners, and the airballs. The unstoppable will and the selfishness. That's the real Kobe: a guy who wasn't perfect, but still good enough to be the best player in the history of a team that had half of the NBA top 10 on its roster for at least one championship run.

Why?? Because YOUR EYES will tell you that’s not true. Like cmon man talk about the game! He had more 50 win seasons… like really dude?? I understand your point of view and it has some validity. But I would rather have Duncan instead of Kobe because of their personalities. With Tim I know that no matter who I trade or pick, he will try to make it work in every way possible for the success of the team. With Kobe I have to trade or pick players that fit his personality first and then his style of play. Not exactly easy as a task. I tend to consider him a slightly more impactful player than Duncan on the court, because I think the best player on your team has to be most of the time, if not always, the best offensive player on the court and if possible a good defender as well. But if we also consider (as we always should) the impact a player can have off the court for the team, Duncan is my choice.

My apologies I meant the 2019 season first season with the lakers they missed the playoffs Lebron missed 18 games before shutting it down after they where out of contention. The year Kobe missed playoffs he missed 16 games. As well Kareem missed the playoffs in his prime as well. I think that along with Kobe beating Duncan more in the playoffs and going to the championship 3 years in a row twice to Duncan only able to make it back to back once and split those times is the separation.

You are comparing LeBrons end of career to peak kobe. LeBron was carrying absolutely awful rosters as well just doing it better

@@mindyourbuisness8104 the team Kobe had that missed the playoffs roster was worse then the 2019 lakers. 2019 at least had Brandon Ingram. still the main point is he missed 16 games.

Do you realize that Bird was averaging 29 ppg in the 86 playoffs. Then ran into Hakeem and that dropped to 24

@@arturasmarma525 Kobe started getting off recognition after 2009. His defensive ratings were worse than Lebrons during his 2nd tenure with the Cavaliers in the regular season. In the playoffs both were All Defensive Caliber.
