Crazy is not the word I'd use. I worked at The Boardwalk and The Keys for a season in 2018. We served over 2000 people a day and thanks for bringing back my PTSD over the mayflys. Still can't believe how thick they can be.

Highly recommend stopping at a wonderful old YC in the Detroit River on an island off Gross point. Maybe the Detroit YC? Very grand but people are friendly, docks are nice, good food inside. Great place.

Would have loved to experience that, but missed it!

I remember taking trips from Put-In-Bay up the Detroit River to Lake Saint Clair and up the St. Clair River to Port Huron and Lake Huron. (I get it why you go across East almost to Toledo though.) Just be mindful if it's a stormy looking day / weather is comming in. I've had fun keeping eyes on a couple of waterspouts that popped up while on the way to the mouth of the Detroit River.

Should have docked further down at Miller Marina near PIBYC Yacht Club. It's much more quiet, extremely clean and friendly. 3 minute walk to where you are docked now. If you belong to an affiliated yacht club, visit PIBYC right next to Miller. And yes, do take a golf cart and go all over the island. If you come back, stop at Kelleys Island instead of PIBYC. Much smaller, quieter, low-key. You can dock near the restaurants and activity, at Portside Marina, or at Seaway Marina which is East of Portside, very protected, VERY quiet. Fuel and a cafe (breakfast and lunch and good food). Great place, golf cart friendly. We dock, seasonally, at Seaway and ferry over from Marblehead when we need to go home etc. We're summer live aboards and have season passes on the Jet Express to get between PIB and KI.

Actually Mayflies are a good thing. They only survive and reproduce when the water is fairly clean. Back in the day, they would pile up in large piles around street light posts, when Lake Erie was very clean. They are also an important food source for fish and birds.

Thanks. So interesting our ecosystem! 😊

Great channel and excellent videos documenting your Loop Adventures. My wife and I are heading out next spring from Florida to do the same trek! We're super excited, so thanks for sharing! My grandparents have done the trip as well. They would head out of Florida in April, and run up the east coast into Lake Erie. They never did the full loop, just up into Lake Erie, Michigan and Huron, then cruise back south along the east coast. I made the trip with them once. Such a wonderful experience. My wife and I are going to make the Loop in a Viking 44 dbl cabin. Which leads me to a couple questions. 1. What's your "air draft?" Our Viking is 15'1" to the top of the flybridge hardtop. I'm allowing an extra 18" for the radar dome, and tailgater satellite dish. That's really close to 17'. Is this enough clearance? 2. Our loaded draft is 4'6", I know under 5' is recommended, do you have issues with your Carver? Thank you again for sharing your adventures!

They don't look as bad as the 'love bugs' here in FL. I spent my youth sailing, boating, and fishing on western Lake Erie (out of Toledo). Been to PIB many times. Catawba Island, too. Now a 40+ year resident of West Florida (South of Tampa). I'd like to take 2-3 years and do the Loop, but not in my current boat. Am actively looking for a suitable vessel. Enjoy your journey, as I enjoy your channel. BTW, Curtice is EAST of Toledo.

As an aside, Perry's Monument, there in the back ground is the smallest National Park in the National Park system. PIB is where Admiral Perry launched is attack on the British Fleet. It was after his successful sea battle he reported: "We have met the enemy and they are ours".

So disappointed we could not go up the monument, but a beautiful sight.

The Mayflies do make a mess of your boat and ashore as well. They can also be found on the Ohio River . Thankfully, they only last around a week or so at most. The Boardwalk can be crazy at times. It is a major rocking place.

Fun place, flies aside!
@12000Jetlag3 жыл бұрын
The may flies also known as Canadian Soldiers are only around for about two weeks. They are a sign of a healthy eco system. They come from the bottom of the lake and the walleye feast on them as they float to the top of the water. As for the noise, Miller's Marina on the opposite side of the Boardwalk is close enough to walk to town and they offer cart rental. The main bonus....it is quiet there.

Boy Anchor Pointe Marina hasn’t changed much from when we docked there back in the 90’s for several seasons. It was a boat- a-minium back then also… we left because it was getting in bad repair, the manager was stealing the money and it went back to the main mortgage company! The poor people who bought docks, were kind of stuck…. Oh how I remember the may-flies! Usually bad foraweek or two
