Whip up the winds a lot quicker is an understatement about Erie. The worst part isn't even the wave height. It's the troughs. They can be within a couple feet of the bottom. And the waves can hit from 2 or 3 directions. I took a friend from Toledo to Put-In-Bay and had to anchor east side of Little Sister due to a nasty fast moving storm. He's from Miami and said he'd take a storm in the ocean any day over Erie. And yes Put-OUT-Bay is insane on the weekends. The winery is nice too.

Wow, that does sound insane! It's an adventure for sure!

Those “crab pots” were fish nets! The strange boat was the Sonny S that runs between Put In Bay and Middle Bass Island. That was a slow day on the island but usually it is packed. You saw Perry’s Monument which is a memorial to the men that died fighting the Battle of a Lake Erie in the War of 1812. It also serves as a peace memorial between the USA and Canada.

Had a cruiser on Lake Erie behind Cedar Point for a couple of seasons. It's no joke. Rogue waves and conditions can change real fast. Being shallow as it is the waves are irregular and that's what makes it so dangerous and sketchy at times. You can be in 3 to 5 ft rollers cruising along and boom an 8 to 10 ft rogue wave will rock your world. Lots of boats and ships have been sank on that lake. I've crossed it when it was a sheet of glass too. It's bipolar. Spent many of days docked at PNB. The Key West of the North. Lots of fun..

Someone needs to get some sea legs. :) You haven't seen nothing of what Lake Erie can throw at you quickly [but I get it that long haul direct route to Put-In-Bay can get to you rocking the beam the right way]. I pretty much grew up in the Erie islands and the western basin of Lake Erie during my summers as a kid with my parents on their boats. Yes I love eating the lobster bisque at the Boardwalk when I go to Put-In-Bay. The "tour boat" you saw is a passenger ferry, the Sonny S, that goes back and forth from the dock at the Boardwalk at Put-In-Bay (on South Bass Island) to the dock next to the former Lonz Winery on Middle Bass Island. Yes the city docks are crazy on the weekends ... I've seen plenty of crazy there as a kid and an adult. If you want more quiet grab a bobber mooring ball in the harbor for overnight, fire up the generator and use the harbor taxi service to take you over to the Boardwalk dock.

I'm not glad you hit bumpy water, but I will say that Rev made me feel better about myself. My husband and I took our maiden voyage from St. Joe, Michigan to South Haven for the 4th of July weekend. I think it is 20-30 miles. We were so excited; we even hired a captain to help us make sure we knew what we were doing. Coming out of the channel of St. Joe, my eyes spotted nothing but white caps on the water! Egad!! I wanted to cry and turn around but the captain said it was a "go". I don't remember what the winds were but we hit 2-3's and I believe the period was 2-3 seconds. We were tossing all around. I was certain I was going to end up on an island with the skipper and Maryann! It being my first voyage, I was scared to death. I actually put one of the orange life vests on and sat on the aft deck, praying the whole time. The captain thought I was a loon, I'm sure. We made it safely to our destination and had an amazing weekend with our kids, who joined us. I've been an embarrassed first mate, being so scared on Lake Michigan, until I heard Rev say she didn't like the washing machine effect of Lake Erie. Thank you for sharing your story. I really hope I get used to the big lake.

Best thing is to read all the notes in navionics or active captain. Then study the diagram for the harbor. Also I take a look at it on Google maps. Also if you go to the website for the marina sometimes they have a dock layout that is numbered. Once I've done all that then I'll give a call to the marina and try to interpret their instructions. 😊
