Outstanding job and attitude. I like your statement "We can take a break but the disabled can't" in the end of the video. I am an incomplete paraplegic and a veteran. If I ever get a van I would trust my life with your designs.

Keith, this pair of videos for for the wheel chair docking system was just heartwarming! I work in a specialized factory that employs a good many handicapped folks and so get to see on a daily basis the challenges they deal with in just getting around day-in and day-out, and it was inspiring watching you create this wheelchair latching system and build it to higher standards than the original manufacturer. At my workplace, the wheelchair-bound commute to and from the place using large vans that have hydraulic lift platforms for the wheelchairs and the vans can carry 3-4 wheelchairs at a time, but the challenges still remain of restraining the folks' personal wheelchair in the vehicle once they have been loaded up.

As a former Wheelie Cab Owner/Operator in Brisbane, this is a great design. A note for those that don't know, the alloy blocks on the sides of the chair tunnel are employed for the seat belts and this has slotted mounts for the seat belt for the occupant, the Braun units in our cab did anyway. My wife was chair bound for many years before pioneering surgery, now has her walking albeit with difficulty sometimes. Keith you are an inspiration to other jobber's, you do it right the first time.

WOW!! WOW!! WOW!! Just last week my son's new wheelchair had a new EZ Lock (ezlock.net) factory bracket mounted to fit with existing docking base. Keith's solution is much superior to it. I sure wish I could have had Keith provide a solution for us just like this. Maybe EZ Lock should license this design from Keith to offer to its customers. My view is that this would be a win-win-win situation - a win each for Keith, EZ Lock, and the wheelchair using customers. For those who have questions about the EZ Lock ratings they address this on their web-site. Apparently they crash test the wheelchair / bracket combinations against some SAE specs. I bet this bracket would survive their test with flying colors. And I second Keith Ward's comment - if there was anyway it could happen I'd gladly sweep up the chips off your shop floor just to work with you. Keith - you set the highest standard for the definition of the word "integrity". Thank you for sharing and bringing up the standards of KZbin.

I just saw that a word had fallen out of my first comment, it should of cause be "I have nothing BUT admiration for your skills." - I'm terrible sorry if I was being conceived as rude. English is not my native langue and sometimes I loose words when i type. As of your answer It's makes good sense and it's great to see that there is still people around who stands up for their work. Cheers from Sweden!

I've watched both vids on you building your new pin lock attachement for the replacement chair to use the EZ Lock docking system. Wishing you all the best above enjoying your genius at work I admired your heart put in it towards building it as if it would have been for the use of your son. Thank You!!! You are a real great example to follow... Godbless!!!

Thanks for the video Keith. What kind words can describe such a person as you. I have a similar problem with bottom clearance on my power wheelchair. The companies expect users to be in wheelchairs where level ground is the norm. Unfortunately that is never the case. Mine can climb a 3" curb but if I use this type of standard equipment I only have about an inch of clearance. Thus limiting the original purpose of the chair (more independence). I can only hope someone around here can do the same type of work. You are an inspiration and keep up the good work.

They were designed just to hold the tube sections together, even if they were replaced with grade 8 it still would be limited to a sheer strength of 1/4" bolts, guess I wasn't comfortable, with that factor...

Hello Keith, First off all love your videos. Proud off this weelchairjob you can be. One thing though, this type of construction is forbidden in my country. One off the reasons; "A fixture connected to a vehicle should withstand a force off 20G at a deadstop from 50km/h." Meaning wheelchair AND occupant weight roughly 150kg x 20 = 3000kg. Do you think this is OK with the pin entering the EZ-Lock? Keep up the good work and greetings from the Netherlands

I love what you are doing, I do have a question. I am a caregiver for a friend who is in a Permobile wheelchair and we use the EZ Lock system. Lately it's not working properly when we push the release button. Its here a service I can do from home that would help it work consistently? Clean up inside it, add a lubricant?

Hey Keith, I know this job is done, but any chance of going back and raising the capture mechanism off the floor of the van ? If you lifted it 4 or 6 inches, then you wouldn't have a ground clearance issue on the chair... just a thought.

Eric I just watched this and you echo my thoughts. I also have an uncomfortable feeling about the strength of this modification in a heavy shunt. I note that Keith has not responded to you.

ok 4 year old post i see used to work for a company suplying wheelcairs and other stuff you done a nice job on the catch making it so it doesnt act like a plow but wouldnt it been eazier to raise the catch in the car itself by about 3 to 6 inches from wat i seen there aren any feetholders in the way so it still would slide over it he wouldnt have to crawl over the floor to get at the adapter bit making a boxsection that bolts to the original spot then have mountingholes for the catchsystem would make it reversable too
@KeithFenner11 жыл бұрын
The feet have to pass over it before it locks into place, so it has to be lower than the foot rest's ;{)-----

@wb6wsn11 жыл бұрын
That was nice work, but wouldn't it have been much better (and simpler) to raise the van's female docking section about 8 inches and simply mount the male docking pin to your big, flat chair adapter plate? That way, you wouldn't need that gooseneck adapter plate and all that work on the four locator/clamp lugs. Plus, the user wouldn't have to mess around with mounting/demounting that gooseneck adapter each time they use the docking system.
@KeithFenner11 жыл бұрын
The higher post would be hitting the feet as they brought him in and the re- movable section was just in case they were going to be coming to rough terrain. Thanks for the add with your comment! ;{)------

I have nothing admiration for your skills. But one thing that comes into my mind when you build stuff for human safety is (compared to for example fixing an old clock), who is responsible in case of an accident? Do you have some kind of legal paperwork regarding the projects you take on?

If there was a ground clearance issue, wouldn't raising the locking mechanism height on the floor of the van eliminated the need to remove the plate from the bottom of the wheelchair? (Just armchair engineering after the fact.)

As far as the accident involving the vehicle or vehicles, one of the operators! If I chose to take on and fail to meet an as per customers request, with a project, where all other restraints, locks and etc. were properly adjusted and I see the after math as proof that I failed to meat the pre proven standards of the original component I have modified, I except the responsibility. ;{)-----

One thing Keith can't do is sloppy work. Also, he can't say "Well, that's good enough."
@ShainAndrews11 жыл бұрын
You do realize he works on many projects involving critical pieces (so they also involve human safety) Should some of those catastrophically fail an individual could easily wind up disabled in a wheel chair. I have yet to see Keith take an unnecessary short cut that would put anybody at risk.
@labellaescrima19965 жыл бұрын
the chair is too big to be used in wheelchair fencing, with all the apparatus the chair would be too heavy to lift, it is a sport chair the lighter it is the better. Although the idea is good, not practical for us wheelchair fencers, I also find it long for fencers to switch chairs, like day to day chair to a sport wheelchair.

I hope you have stopped using the HIGHLY offensive word "handicapped" by now. We are disabled people, and we are disabled by society, NOT our impairments (look up social model of disability)
