My sister and I bought one of these for my parents and the four of us would play it together. In Wichita kansas, our local station offered prizes to the first one to call in with the correct answer, and we won some prizes though I can't remember what. This really seemed like magic back in those days to be able to play the puzzle and solve it before the contestants did, but we did. Thanks so much for putting this KZbin video together because I was questioning what are this really happened, it was so ahead of its time (and my memory is so unreliable.)

I bet you own the play along unit, you might be able to play along with this on KZbin. My friend has the unit and managed to use this video and it worked.

I didn’t know that there was a Wheel Of Fortune VCR game. It’s retro, and awesome at the same time.

Oh yeah, I had that clunky little thing. I remember when you could still use it on the broadcasts for a short time to play along as it aired, but at least we still have these tapes I guess.

9:30 I think it’s “X-Ray Specialist”. Edit: I was incorrect, but I may have got the first part right. Edit 2: It is “X-Ray Technician”.

Digital video archiving of the original VHS game cassettes do not seem to work. As another poster noted below the game appears to receive its data from an infrared signal emitted from a CRT TV. I still have a working game unit and have found that the unit does respond by blinking its red light any time you hit it with any type of infrared while it is displaying "AIM AT TV", such as a normal TV remote control. I have also tried hooking up an old VHS VCR to my LED TV and playing the game cassette to no effect. Hooking up my VCR to an old CRT TV allows the game unit to work just fine. I guess LED TVs don't emit infrared or it modifies the video-in signal from the VCR before displaying and effectively removes the infrared content. Hope this saves other people time in trying to get this unit to work.

I had one of these as a kid, and figured out how it worked. It receives encoded infrared signals emitted from a CRT. It has nothing to do with the tracking lines which someone mentioned. It's similar in function to a remote control. In fact, you could make the 'red light' turn on, and the music play by pointing a remote at it. I'm willing to bet if you had a smartphone camera pointed to a CRT playing this video, you would be able to see the infrared pulses being emitted. I have the 2 puzzle tapes, and a few WOF broadcasts on VHS laying around somewhere in the attic. The game itself is long gone. I took it apart and broke it when I was an inquisitive child. p.s. I had this machine, and I used to play with the actual show. If the show still supported it, it would be nice to rebuild this machine with a Braille display and allow blind people to be able to read the puzzles. The machine would actually fill in letters as Vanna flipped them, so a blind person could read in Braille to see exactly how the puzzle is revealed. Right now, the show doesn't mean much to a blind person since the puzzles are visual.

Originally this did work with the show itself. You had to point it at the TV set as the show aired to get the puzzle for that round to appear on the LCD screen.

Not sure how a Braille version would work though unless they make machines that sets up the appropriate dots necessary to feel each time.

I wonder who the unknown lady was playing the WOF game. I don't think it was Vanna, she was CERTAINLY known by this time.

Dan Barker Good question. I was hoping it would say on the box of the VHS cassette, but it does not, only further instructions for use of the game pad. Perhaps on the volume 1 VHS or the original VHS it says who it is (since this is expansion #2 basically).

I suspect that whatever it's using to get signals from the tape into the unit isn't surviving being captured and encoded by KZbin :(

This really requires a VCR and CRT monitor to fully work with the unit. The original VHS release has the info contained within the vertical hold bar.

+Jack DeLorenzo I do not. I posted this so I could post it to a gaming forum, hoping someone would be able to figure out the signals that the tape sends the gaming unit, and possibly replace the gaming unit.
@ChristopherSobieniak
@ChristopherSobieniak 8 жыл бұрын
Actually, it wouldn't work this way as those signals are only detected via interlace mode of the original video, I know they have something to do with the vertical hold on the VHS tape itself as it's played through a CRT monitor. That sort of thing can't be replicated digitally. You really do need to have the unit, the tape, a VCR and suitable CRT monitor for this to work.
