Awwww dude, you trimmed the beard! Pretty sure feudal Italy was analogous with Altara/Ebou Dar (daggers, duels, and the food). Tear was more of Spain/French Riviera.

That Italian location looks great, but is an odd fit for Tear. Tear being on a delta should be pretty flat, with the Stone rising above it being that much more massive. That hilly/mountainous terrain would reduce the impact of the Stone. Oh, and I'd love to see a roasting of some of those articles.

Isn't the common analog for Tear actually Spain, not Italy? Obviously not in terms of terrain, but in a visual style of the culture? (Certainly from the descriptions of their armor, etc.)

@@orchideater5840 I never really tried to consider cultural parallels. Some small ethnic ones, like I see the Seafolk as looking Indian, both in dress and physical appearance. I see elements of a bunch of different cultures in each.

The fan base has long made cultural comparisons to real world analogs - Andor:England, Cairhien:France, Tear:Spain, etc. In the video Jon mentions that Tear is often associated with Italy, which I had never heard before - only Spain. I don't think that shooting location need to match the commonly favored analogs though - locations scouts aren't looking to be as precise as the fans are, of course. Except for Dragonmount, the area around Tar Valon should be flat, and Emonds Field does not abut the Mountains of Mist, but that's what they've gone with.

I agree. I HATE fantasy that is always dark...every scene is dark and obscure and you can't see anything. Makes it look extremely cheap... (make it dark to hide our crappy set)...I hate that. The real world isn't always like a vampires lair.

In my opinion anytime a program leaves people adjusting their display settings to try and get a better picture so they can see what is happening and it isn't a product of technical difficulties than that production has in one way failed in conveying information through the visual medium. If the Wheel of Time adaptation is as successful as I want it to be than ideally it will have put a death nail in the coffin of the awful trend that fantasy on screen must be as dark as the soul of an edgelord.

The two places we see the most of in the teaser are Emond's Field and Tar Valon. At the time the books start, both of these places are supposed to be the opposite of dark and gritty. Emond's Fielders take pride in this and the state of Tar Valon is remarked upon multiple times in the book and how that changes is part of the plot. It SHOULD be bright and clean now. If it doesn't change as the series progresses, then I might complain.

The Italy location seems more like it would be Toman's Head, as you said, but maybe exclusively and not Tear just yet, which is a coastal city as well as Tear is. Makes more sense with "Elayne" character being there as I can't see her showing up in anyway in a Tear scene this early at all. I guess it could be Illian in perhaps a scene or two where a Forsaken has been dwelling.... :)

I could see how you could combine books 2 and 3, with it ending with rand defeating the seanchan (at tear not flame), taking the stone and revealing he is the dragon. not a ton of stuff happens in book 3 and they have to be smart with the production money, and how long they can retain talent consecutively. On my first glance of the city, I thought of Caemlyn. I wouldn't know, what Alana would do there either, but if the Elayne-actress is there, maybe... And they said, that some parts of book one would be in season two, so I'm hopeful for that. And congrats on the 10k :)

I can see that town being falme, that valley creates a bay with some CG. The terrain doesn't really fit tear though, from what I can remember. A big part of tear later on is that it's surrounded by swamp. Keep in mind, they may do shoots at another location later on. I suspect that they'll do about half the season in Falme. An episode or two in transit. And then wrap up the show with one episode in Tear, and end the season with the DR taking the stone. Season ends with the Tairens proclaiming the DR officially.

I'm quite sure the Italy parallel is Altara. I think they're filming the events at Falme, except they're putting them in Altara/Ebou Far so they can reuse the location/culture. Also in terms of time they should still be filming the first half of S2, right? Tear parallels Spain, so it will be interesting to see if any of the cast start showing up in Spanish locations.

I know nothing about Ceara other than pictures.... but it's eerie... of all the cast so far, she is the closest to the character I had in my mind. If she randomly walked into a bar, my thought would have been 'Elayne?!?' There is so much too this rumor, and she looks so eerily perfect, people are going to be PISSED if it _ISN'T_ Elayne now. In the books I've always considered Altara to be Italy and Tear to be Spain. Not one-to-one analogues of course, but in terms of the strongest influences.

I tend to agree. Altara has a bit of a Sicilian vibe, mixed with other Mediterranean and North African elements. The nobility of Tear and the city itself have a very distinctive Spanish vibe, but a bit like with the Andorans the common folk are almost a different people, with South East Asian influences, including Vietnam, the Philippines. That's due to the fact Hawking took the nobility of each former nation and set them to rule other provinces, to better break the old nations. In some cases like Andor, Tear, and Cairhien, the governors became the permanent new rulers post Hawkwing, ethnically different from the people they rule over. Illian has a mix of Greek and Italian influences, this time mostly Venetian/Genoan.

@@dominicaudy8479 I have a crackpot theory that the TV-Seanchan will land in Ebou Dar instead of Falme, and the Falme events can be moved there. It's a location that's important in later plots, plus the Seanchan end up there eventually, so using it early on makes more sense.

@@celticmyst08 It could be, though the whole point of having it happen on Almoth Plain and Falme in the book was that it was a nearly abandoned land and an independent city. Moving that first invasion to a land like Tarabon, Altara, Illian or Tear would change a lot of things. There are rulers, nobles, soldiers, Aes Sedai advisers. It would be far more than just fantastical rumours and stories if the Forerunners landed in a very populated land. They’d need a bigger force, too. This makes me think that they will keep Falme in the story. We’ll know early if they keep the prophecies. Another motive to stick with Falme is that it would be easier for the show to use this location once and move on than to establish this early a late series location like Ebou Dar that they will need to return to, but only much later.

@@talmanes4589 Probably just a mix up with Illian and Mayenne that both have a few Italian elements in their mix, though for Mayenne it’s mostly the fact it’s a city state and it’s system is a little like Venice’s council when the Doge was First Among Equals. Based on what they did with Tar Valon, it’s also important to keep in mind that those locations will be used a great deal for street level scenes and occasionally scenery, but that the cities proper are CGI and will look nothing like the larger environments of these real world cities. It’s completely irrelevant for e.g. that this Italian city is on hilly terrain with mountains that don’t match anything in the books. Very hilly narrow streets with a light, aesthetically pleasing old architecture actually match perfectly one book location: Caemlyn’s Inner City. The fact outside the street level this looks nothing like the countryside of Andor, or the climate or geography is irrelevant, if they use only the streets, walls etc. And people will note that Andor has English overtones and it’s true, but Caemlyn doesn’t look English in the least: the Inner City is Ogier built in white and light stones, just like Tar Valon, but very hilly.

Isn't Illian a Greece parallel? Like the names and appearance of characters, the climate, the laurel crown and Macedonian troop names. There's some Dutch influence too, Bruges was a huge mercantile centre and it has a lot of canals.
