I agree. Even though I’d prefer a wheel under 62mm, they’re still a great outdoor wheel! And 85a is such a happy medium for street/sidewalk without feeling too slowed down like you would with an even softer wheel.

I much prefer them to a softer wheel for tennis courts, basketball courts and such. What wheels you choose for what can really depend on the style of skating you intend to do as well- if you’re doing dance/rhythm skating then harder wheels are almost always the way to go! ✨

I love the scene where you are skating on the path through a forested area. I have 70mm wheels, very soft for path skating. I still am very careful of anything that can stop my wheel. And you are wearing legwarmers on the tennis court! Awesome.

Hi! I found your video in a reddit thread and hopped on over here for one quick question. I am a rollerdancer. My teacher/mentor is Richard Humphrey. We mostly skate outdoors and, honestly, for all my outdoor and indoor skate needs (always on smooth surfaces) the Rollerbones Bee One Legend Wheels (57mm 98a) have been a DREAM! I drill every day at home too. We recently moved and in our new place the floors are CRAZY slippery. The 88a Radar Crush wheels are perfect, except for one thing... I hate switching over from them to my Rollerbones when in class and then back to the Radar Crush at home, because the wheels, size aside, feel so different are far as weight distribution etc and maneuverability when it comes to rollerdancing. I still highly prefer the Rollerbones and my dream would be Rollerbones wheels at 57mm 88a durometer for my home floors. However, they don't make them that soft and that size. SO.... all my googling made me consider the Sonar Zen (though 85a might be a tad too soft for my floors cause I also have the Radar Crush 84a wheels and they are too soft and bouncy for me). They are bigger than I'd like but I'd consider shaving them down to 57mm if so. How do you find the durometer to be/feel? And as far as wheel shape/feel/edges for dancing? Any thoughts you. might have on them would be super helpful! Thank you!

This is a great video! Probably the best wheel video I’ve seen. I’m about 7 months into skating and have started to figure out my wheel preferences and am getting accustomed to harder wheels. I also like small wheels. Right now I really love my Moxi Fundae wheels outside and at the skate park, and Sure Grip Fames for indoors. I think I’m going to get some Team wheels to use on smooth outdoor surfaces in the next few months when I’m ready to level up outside. Radar Energy 57s are my favorite for rough outdoors and trails. My least favorite wheel are my Luminous 85A 62mm, but they’re awful pretty!

Thank you!! :) So the Rollerbones 98a 57mm wheels are probably very similar in feel to the Moxi Fundae wheels as far as hardness goes. However, unlike the Fundaes, they're not rounded on the edges, meaning you'll get cleaner pivots and such- better for dance or very intricate footwork. I skate trails with 85a, but otherwise I always use a harder wheel. The partner skate video I just published today, I'm outside on a tennis court type concrete surface using my very hard vanathane wheels :) Def play around with different setups! I have noticed that once people adjust to harder wheels they rarely go back though haha!

I started with original All American Plus wheels but gave them away..Since then Bones 98a, 101a,103a i havent used yet, and now I ride Riva 98a with Roll Line bearings...It takes time to dial in the trucks and wheels, to see which surfaces work better..

The surface definitely plays a role! Some wood floors are much slicker then others, and outdoors you find so many different textures in cement and asphalt. I pretty exclusively use vanathane unless it’s as rough as, say, a road paved in last 6 months. For that I’d probably use 98a. Those wheels you had… they were the vintage All Americans? If so, skaters treat those like gold! 😍

One other factor would be the shape of the edge. If you run tight trucks, having a rounded edge helps make things smoother, less clunky. If you run looser, square edges are fine

Interesting point! I really only see park skaters running rounded edge wheels. Indoor skaters pretty much all use the squared edge ones, though of course with use any square wheel will eventually become rounded!

I agree- I’d save the vanathanes for inside. If your daughter skates ramps I don’t have a knowledge opinion on wheels though, since I’ve only skated a park maybe 5 times :) but Rollerbones are great for skating in general on smooth cement. You can’t go too wrong with them I don’t think.

Great video! When I first got my Lollies I immediately switched from the Gummy wheels to the 57mm Rollerbones 98a for rink skating and never looked back. When rinks closed due to pandemic I switched to the Radar 57mm, which I felt was a happy medium between the Gummies and Rollerbones Team wheel. I liked having the similar profile and dimensions of the Team wheels but in a softer composition for outdoors.

I have Moxi lolly’s , and I’m getting some indoor rollerbones but what nuts and which brand bearings do you recommend. I gave the powerdyne nylon thrust plate do I also need washers ? Any help would be great

@@CloudsInMyCoffee69 I'd recommend Bones Reds for the bearings. You'll need 16, meaning two per wheel. Also, be sure to get 8mm. You don't need nuts or washers.. the nuts that are currently on the wheels are what you'll use, and I had that set up for ages without washers. Never bad to have a set of washers though.. you may need them in the future! :)

Realized now that I ever replied to this! How do you like the trick wheels? They’d be too rounded on the edges for me personally (better for carving a bowl I’d think) but I’m sure it really depends on your skate style. I like a crisp edge on wheels for control when doing footwork :)

I think I made a mistake with investing in too many wheels before knowing what they are used/good for. I do like the lighter feel of the wheel but a jam skater is working with me and he’s getting me the small vanathane wheels you mentioned. I recently got the American Plus wheels but he said the ones he can get his hands on are smaller and better 🤷🏽‍♀️ I’m sure as I continue to learn foot work and different skills I will start to understood why certain wheels are preferred over others!

@@MsLashun The vanathane wheels were all originally around 57-59mm, but typically, since they're vintage, they've been cut down such that they have edges again. Most of us roll around a 52-55mm wheel if on vanathane, but I've seen people go even smaller. The clincher being, if you go TOO small, your king pin could potentially hit the ground and break. So just make sure your king pin has at least a few millimeters of floor clearance, and a whole lot more if you roll them outside (in case you roll over debris). Smaller (as in under 57mm) is definitely better for rhythm skating! And the vanathane really is the perfect slip/grip ration for it. The vintage ones are very similar to the All Americans in feel, just they wear better over time. The All Americans feel like they dissolve into nothing before your eyes lol - Hope you enjoy them!!

Roll Line plates aren’t cheap, but they are soooo worth it!! The Giottos I believe are maybe a 20 degree angle? Not sure. All I remember is they’re NOT a 10 or a 45. I use the soft grey cushions on them. I also went about a half centimeter shorter for the wheel base on these, which at the start changes your balance points a bit, but overall aided in agility, and gave me tons of space to get on my toes when dancing :) I’ll do a video review of them soon!

Thanks so much! Happy to share what I've learned along the way! I bet you'll love the RB 98a wheels for tennis courts. To me, it's the perfect wheel for those conditions. If I had Radar Energies I'd use them in the places you see me using the Sonar Zens in this video. I know they're softer, which I may or may not like, but I'm sure I'd be more comfortable on a 57mm wheel. I just really wish more wheel companies would put out an 85a in 57mm. No idea why this is something that's hard to find!

I have the Radar Energy 57mm and they're very grippy! I like using them outdoors to practice spins and more agile moves because the pavement and asphalt where I live are AWFUL and the softness smoothes them out. But they might be a little too grippy for dance skating even outdoors, unless your asphalt is as awful as it is here lol

Yeah, I've been concerned about that too. Usually I'm not dancing unless it's quite smooth, which is why I haven't raced to get a set already, though.. So really I only use the 85a wheels for trail skate type settings. Whenever I do finally buy a set (probably in spring when I can skate outside again!), I'll do a review video of them!

So the vanathane wheels I use right now are vintage and these days are hard to come by. I’ve seen some pop up on eBay and Instagram but you kinda just gotta know someone. This said, you can get current day All American Plus wheels on Amazon and they’ll feel roughly the same as the orange ones- they’ll just wear down faster. Velvets are essentially just All American Plus in pretty colors 😁 They ARE vanathane. Just vintage vanathane had asbestos in it. The new ones do not. Fomacs are notably slicker and harder than vanathane wheels. At my current weight (about 140lbs), I can’t hold a tight edge at speed on Fomacs without sliding out- they just don’t provide enough grip for how I like to skate. Vanathane wheels seem to be the happy medium of slip and grip for me (and most who skate primarily NY/NJ style).

Thanks! I'm on a Roll Line Giotto plate. I have a Moxi Lolly size 6 boot and the plate is size 140, so it's on the short side, meaning lots of space in the front to get on my toes. Also worth noting, this is a NTS plate (no toe stop), meaning there's not even a place for a plug. So you need to be pretty dedicated to dance if you go with this, since you have no option for a stopper haha! I believe the Roll Line Mistral is the same plate but WITH a toe plug spot though I'm not positive. I've had a half done pivot/three turn tutorial on my phone for about 2 months now!!! I gotta finish that thing! You're one of maybe 8 people who have asked me to do a tutorial on those! I promise I'll get to it eventually! :) :) :)

Hi, Thank you for going over all these size wheels! Love your skating! I have a pair of Roller Bones 57mmx 98a on back order till May, My skates are Crazy Skates w/ stock wheels. I roller skate on a indoor basketball court. (Thank God I’m able to have it to myself)! I’m 63 yrs old. The stock wheels are feeling clunky. I haven’t roller skated in 53 yrs! I’m worried that the Roller Bones 57mm x 98a might be too fast for me. Should I go towards a softer wheel in Roller Bones or try a different brand? Looking forward to your input. Thanks so much!

I think you should be fine with the 98a wheels! 98a isn't really considered a very hard wheel and has quite a bit of grip to it. Like any change, it will take some getting used to. Definitely give them a few weeks and see how you feel before considering switching things up again :) And thank you!! Lots of hours on the wood with lots of awesome mentors to get my skating where it is now!

@@CloudsInMyCoffee69 The bearing size is dependent upon your plate and not your wheels. Any wheels will fit any size bearings since the bearing size is actually the size of the hole (where the axle goes through) and not the outer diameter. What kind of skates do you have? The plate on them will have either 7mm or 8mm axles. Bearings come in those 2 sizes.

Very informative video! You mentioned having had Rollerbones 101a 62mm wheels but really didn't say much about them other than you switched to 98a 57mm. How do the two compare to each other? Did you not care for the 101a 62mm? I typically skate 98a 62mm in the rink. I find them fast but not particularly agile. I tried 98a 57mm a couple weeks back. They were more maneuverable than the 62mm but slower. I'm wondering if the 101a 57mm would feel even more agile? I want to get better at dance moves, but my skate setup feels overly heavy to me. I have older leather Riedells with Powerdyne Triton plates. I want to make changes to make them lighter. Suggestions please. Thanks!

So, when I went from 62mm 98a to the All Americans (which are about 55mm or so), I really loved both the size and the slide I could get on them. I didn't have 57mm 98a at all until I later bought a set for outdoors. I did at one point try a friend's 57mm 101a wheels for comparison sake, but I preferred the All American/vanathane wheels. The 101a felt sticky compared to vanathane. A smaller, slicker wheel will def feel more agile, so I'm sure 57mm 101a will be better than 57mm 98a, but based on you wanting to do dance moves, I'd recommend a vanathane wheel over the bones! As for plates, I love my Roll Line Giottos. They're quite light, partly because they don't have a spot for a toe stop in front. Really, any Roll Line plate is great from what I hear.

I’m def trying the 98a and I like the rollerbones….but not sure what size I should go with….my stock skates (sure grip fame) have 57mm…..and I tried some 62mm 101a but I think they were too fast for me…at least now… Sorry for paragraph! @@awhite286 No problem! I prefer 57mm or even smaller for the style I skate. I’m much more agile with a smaller wheel. Larger wheels are great for speed. If you’re looking to dance/do precision footwork, I’d go with 57mm for sure!

So I just use Bones Reds but they’re nothing fancy. If you want a real fast roll, I’d suggest ceramic bearings :)

Yes, any skate bearing will work with any wheel :) The only factor to consider is if you change the plates on your skates. Some plates take 7mm bearings and others take 8mm bearings. But either size bearing fits in any wheel.

Question, So Im More Of A 3-4 Year Rink Speed Experienced Skater, But Ive Never Had My Own Skates, Only Tuned Rink Skates To My Liking. For Speed/Roller Dance What Size Radar or Sonar Wheel Would Be The Best And Which Exact One?

For dance, Sonar Radar doesn't make an indoor wheel to my liking. For dance a wheel of 57mm or under is ideal and those only come in 62mm. There also too soft for indoor use. Speed is a whole other animal and I'm not the person to ask about that since it's not the style I skate, however generally speaking, a bigger wheel with more surface area will provide greater speeds. Honestly? I really don’t like those wheels for that reason!! I use vintage wheels when I’m able to get my hands on them bc they aren’t as porous and therefore don’t collect as much grime. This said, I’ve soaked them in hot soapy water then used used a copper scouring pad. This usually does the trick.

Another question do you 8mm bearings fit in the old orange wheels?..lol.. I have a older pair of Sure Grip velvets but ..the 8mm do not fit..

Yes, they do. And they should fit in the velvets as well. 8mm is the size of the hole that the axle goes through, not the outer diameter of the bearing itself. So a 7mm bearing will fit the same in the wheel as an 8mm will (just won't fit on your skates!). The reason it feels like they don't fit is because vanathane is quite hard. It's going to take more pressure to push that bearing into the wheel since the wheel doesn't "give" at all. I haven't tried it, but I've heard that if you warm the wheels up a bit that the bearings go in a more easily- worth a shot!

I got some velvets awhile back, and they felt kinda weird. Like they were “slipping” within their roll sometimes. I asked the rink a manger what she thought and she put in some spacers between the bears and that helped. But still the roll just felt off. And I used to skate with these back in the late seventies! Coming back to skating after 20 years. What types of wheels do you recommend for cement/poly coated floor? Thanks.

So I generally keep my vanathane wheels on for just about any smooth surface (wood, cement, pavement, etc), only changing my wheels to something softer if I were to do a true street or trail skate (then I’d either go with 98a or 85a depending just how rough it is). If you’re not feeling the Velvets, which are essentially the same as what I us (they’re vanathane too), then maybe try Rollerbones 101a 57mm wheels. I’ve never owned a set of the 101a Elites but I tried them once and they were super smooth- just a bit stickier than what I like. If you’re finding the Velvets are slipping, you may love the Rollerbones! Obviously I know nothing of your skate level, but one piece of advice for skating a small slick wheel like the Velvets: take small steps, keep feet relatively close together and stay over your skates! Use lots of knee bend to keep your weight above your wheels. Do this and you may find you’ll be slipping less :)

I’m not familiar with the Atom Tone wheels. I use vanathane wheels at BBP. I think most of the dedicated long term BBP skaters are on vanathane, fomacs, Rollerbones 101 or 103, or something equally hard and slick. :) I would def find 98a to be too sticky for how I skate. Maybe scoop up a set of All America Plus or Suregrip Velvets to see how they feel, or even borrow some from someone for a session. What days do you usually skate there? I’m generally only there Sunday nights but every now and again I may show up for a Tuesday or Thursday! Love me some BBP...

@@lacyladi9951 Tuesdays are pretty chill at BBP as far as adult sessions go! Def a good mix of levels and styles represented. So I’d say just bite the bullet and get some Velvets. Even if you try them and end up feeling like you’re not ready yet, eventually you WILL be ready so they won’t go to waste! Hmu on IG if you ever plan to make it out on a Sunday! I’m @rollingintune. Honestly, it really depends on rink surface.. if it's on the sticky side, go with 101a or All Americans. If it doesn't have much grip, then you may want to go with 98a to start. Eventually, if you stick with it long term, you're going to end up with an entire shelf worth of wheels like the rest of us! It's really just trial and error and personal preference in the end. :)

Hi, I just got rollerbones team wheels 98a 62mm and when I put them on my rookie skates (which I just got as well) the trucks (idk if that’s what I’m talking about) but when I tighten the nut down tight and un tight it so the wheel with smoothly slide the trucks stick out the wheel. Is it okay for my to add washers in before I place the wheel to take up some space?

So, if you can screw the nut all the way down until the wheel doesn't wobble but spins freely without resistance, then you don't need washers, even if the axle sticks out beyond the wheel. However, if you can't screw the nut down sufficiently and the wheel is wobbling on the axle, than absolutely add washers on the axle before putting the wheel on. I've skated setups where I needed washers and setups where I did not, so it really depends on the combination of both the plate and wheel. Hope that helps! :)

The only reason why I added washers was because when the axle was sticking out and I was skating they slammed each other so I added like 3 or 4 washers before putting the wheel on but I didn’t know if having too many washers was like recommended or not.

Any skate bearing should be able to fit any skate wheel, just with hard vanathane wheels it can take a whole lot of force to get the bearing in. I HATE changing bearings in vanathane wheels bc even with a press it takes some serious muscle and my hands are usually aching by the end!

That’s because they can not be rated on the “A” durometer scale because they are not a urethane or rubber material. They are made of a material called vanathane and feel and behave completely differently than urethane wheels. I’d say they offer perhaps the slide of a 103A wheel on some surfaces but you can also press in and grip when needed. They respond heavily to how much pressure you put on them.
