Thanks Ronny, what a timely video. I'm currently shopping for steel rims, and as I have jmacx's axle, I thought I didn't need an offset. Could not find one a zero offset and some were ridiculously out. ROH were the smallest at 10mm. Now I know why. Two inch wider rim will bring it in 1 inch and rub on something. Cool, now I'm happy to buy them. Thank you.

People should also be aware about how offsets can effect your scrub radius, and that your offset should match your Tyre height and king ping inclination so you suspension geometry stays in spec and you don’t ruin its handling

Thanks Ronny. Great video Also changing the offset either way has a negative impact on steering geometry. Maybe worth the compromise for better stability, but worth thinking about. As well as if you change it and something breaks or bends (think wheel coming off) the vehicle manufacturer will wash their hands of it and you’ll be on your own. They will just say we didn’t test or design the vehicle with those wheels. Can get very bad very quickly if there’s an accident with injury or death. Think ISUZU NPS300 4x4 with wide singles instead of the standard dual rear wheels.

I think another important distinction to make is that you can go less positive or more positive if you currently have a positive offset wheel. Likewise, you can go more or less negative offset if you currently have a negative offset wheel. i.e. my truck came with +45 offset wheels. I was running 35x12.5 tires with no rub. I wanted to up the tire to 37x13.5. I also wanted to increase the rim width from 8" to 9" to better suit the wider tires which also has to be considered in the calculation. I went with a lesser positive offset wheel of +20mm. In my case this was the best balance between rubbing on the upper control link inboard and rubbing on the rear of the fender well outboard. In the end with a little rear fender well trimming I have no rub on the fender at full lock, but I did gain a little rub on the upper link at full lock. This is the compromise I had to except to maximize my tire / wheel combo. If I went to 0mm or negative offset, I could easily clear the upper link, but I would have to do major surgery to the rear of the fender well.
@grantkerr29714 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ronny, I think legality is an important consideration. I’m led to believe the maximum negative offset legal in Australia is -25 mm from standard fitment. (For benefit of viewers Eg current model Hilux is +30 therefore max allowed is +5 before one becomes illegal) I see vehicles everyday on the road with aftermarket wheels which are running around with illegal offset if the above is true. If you have knowledge in this area It would be great if you could share that as well, cheers 👍

Great video. I would also add that if at all possible one should keep the offset of the factory wheel, even if you go wider (by not too much). This will keep your suspension geometry unaltered. If you change your offset either way you should have your suspension readjusted to keep your tires flat to the road, otherwise along with your bearings you'll unevenly wear out your tires as well.

Top explanation Ronny but refer to the 70 series if you decide to use a -55 offset to correct the rear it will mean that you need to run two spares so the track width stays the same on the front. That’s why a wheel spacer works better as you can run the same rim offset front and rear
@hansheulu3 жыл бұрын
But the original setting of HILUX is that the wheelbase of the front wheel is wider than the wheelbase of the rear wheel~ There should be a reason, right? I don't understand why the rear wheelbase is compensated to be the same as the front wheelbase? Are there any advantages?
@travisoverly14324 жыл бұрын
I went with a -19 offset on my new wheels gave me exactly what I was looking for. Slightly wider stance increased my stability a food amount and my traction when driving through soft surfaces.
@raynman64664 жыл бұрын
Traction? A wider track width will have zero effect on Traction. My bet is you got new tyres and that's why you got more traction

I done a mild 2.5" lift kit My tires are 285/75-R15 Or just slightly under 33/11.5 -R15 With stock rims they have a slight rub at full tilt And a good scrap noise while turning over a uneven driveway entrance I went with a -19mm steel rim for many reasons ..One with added height (even slight) Your centre of gravity has changed Going up You need to go out Number 2 the rubbing is on the inside frame of the truck Having a offset opens the gap between the tire and the frame rail I also took the factor of factory wheel specs to bigger tires And the speed diffrence of 9 Mph / 14.4Kms faster So if my Speedo says im driving at 50kms the actual speed is 64.4 Good to note in a school zone where tickets are double in price And 14 over is a reason to stop you Number 3 Steel rims over Alloy/Alum In Canada Winter can drop to -51C (Alot of cars dont even start) If you ever driven on ice chances are you tapped a curb hidden in the snow Do this with a frozen alloy rim and it does not bend it snapped off a chunk Steel rims bend and can be bent back into shape depending on how hard they been hit And in many cases Steel rims are cheaper And easier/cheaper to clean up And last

Great vid, the stance is really different, and less of a security hazard for cars, especially that, u'll want to do a little less in a car than u could do in a proper off road vehicle (a car that's 1-worth it, 2-can take it). I myself have had rims 25mm wider than stock with 20mm negative offset mounted on my Mustang, not to mention smaller, spacers are a no go for me, thick ones will mess with u'r vehicle and have a huge chance to throw the wheel off balance. thin ones reduce u'r lug nut threads by the amount of it's width, not a stupid thing to make them illegal

Surely you mean when he says divide by half it would mean, for example 100 divided by 50? Cause you are dividing it by half of the main number?
@kelvinelrick8074 жыл бұрын
@@speedygonzales9993 I figured that is what the case is.
@kelvinelrick8074 жыл бұрын
@@thatsgangsta2450 When you divide by a fraction, you multiply the number by the fraction's inverse. One half (1/2) becomes two (2/1), which means multiply by 2. In your example 100 divided by 50 = 2. That answer was already known. And surely, I meant exactly what I said.

For best performance you need to keep the center of tire over your hub. This is how they are engineered. Extra stress will wear out parts

Yes. Even if going with a bit wider wheels, keeping the same offset as the factory wheels wll keep the loads on the bearings the same, and keep your suspension corretly set.

On an IFS, putting wider rims or tyres on, you'll need to move the offset out to maintain the space between the sidewall and the UCA. This is a great argument for aftermarket UCAs so that offsets don't need to change to clear the UCA... Changing offsets & tyre size is a major balancing act. Too tall & you rub. Too wide, you rub. Offset in, you rub, offset out, you rub... If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
