-puffy vest -electric blanket -electric heating pads -toe warmers - I have poor circulation in my feet, so toe warmers are a must on colder days -wool socks - I wear these every day in the winter -sweatpants - the perfect weight for winter here, and they can be layered -windproof fleece jacket and pants - I ride in these all the time in the winter, and since they both have long side zips, I can adjust the ventilation as needed -insulated leather gloves - for riding, working, or (as I discovered just this evening that they have rather excellent grip) just wheeling around -sunglasses - the glare of the sun on the snow can be absolutely blinding due to the thinner atmosphere; my regular glasses are tinted, but I still need sunglasses as well on sunny days -Muck Boots - really come in handy in sloppy muddy horse corrals, and I can also ride in them so no need to change into riding boots (most of us ride in Boggs, Muck Boots, or hiking boots in the winter, as western stirrups are generally wide enough for it); definitely my favorite winter boots, and they're wide enough at the top that I can tuck my pants into them Yet to see how my SmartDrive will handle the snow (I just got my new chair 10 days ago), but I'm optimistic about snow that's not very deep.
@billiebluesheepie29074 жыл бұрын
I’ve had a smart drive for a few years and I live in the north west of England, so usually see snow every year (...and I can’t drive, so I use it a lot). Generally they cope well with basic snow as it’s falling on the type of ground that’s usually grippy when it’s wet, but rubbish on slippery ‘York stone’ type pavement, like when wet. Once ‘slush’ has frozen it’s a bit grippy-er, but once wet pavements have frozen they go slick and it just spins. (I go curling and it just spins out and you go nowhere, so you can try it year round if you’re curious!) A little warning with a smart drive, your battery will only last for about five minutes when it’s really cold, then it just stops dead, if you warm it slowly, like in a shop, cafe or scout hut, it might come back on after about an hour. (...and never charge lithium batteries when they’re below about 5*C as it kills them dead and they cost £1,100 to replace!). I’ve seen some mini skis that clip onto your front castors but they didn’t fit my wheels as I have really fat sized ones (...which I fully recommend if you like being on rough ground, or like going really fast - I’m a scout and cub leader, so I spend lots of time on less ideal surfaces and not as much of a trip hazard/ankle catcher as a freewheel on short distances!).

Be VERY careful with electric warming devices if you have any loss of sensation. I once had a heated mattress pad I loved, but I fell asleep with it too high one night and woke up with a big burn on my leg because I hadn’t moved all night. Unplugged it and never used it again. I go through about one pair of thin leather gloves every winter. They protect my hands from the cold of my handrims, but still allow me to grip tightly to push. (I tried once getting steering wheel covers for my handrims instead, but they just split and peeled off.) I was gifted knitted gloves once, but they just slid over the smooth metal and I couldn’t go uphill. And the best thing for a car is a remote start! Remember to set the ventilation to defrost and crank the heat up all the way before you exit, then press the remote start button on the key fob about 5-10 minutes before you leave. It’ll melt the snow right off the windshield and you won’t have to try and reach all the way up there with an ice scraper.

I am not in a wheelchair at the moment, but a lot of these are great ideas. Because I don’t move very quickly or manage to control my body temperature well, I try to stay warm. Heated seats in the car were perfect last winter. My husband bought the car on Dec 1st. I was already loving them, but by the middle of the month I had a kidney infection, and the heated seats were one of the few things that helped me stay comfortable while travelling. I ended up in hospital on my birthday 😢 I have one of the heated blankets to try, and I have the heat pads that run off the mains. The pad is great for period and back pain too. I have used thermals when out in the cold. I like the Sainsbury’s TU ones. Much cheaper than M&S and in a range of styles. My big bugbear is finding gloves I can use with my phone. I have had ones with the touch screen fingertips that are ok in autumn and early winter, but leave me cold in the depths of winter. I prefer the mitten style with the button flaps for driving, as I prefer to feel what’s happening with my fingertips. Those aren’t so great for walking in or phone use though. This is my first winter with a walking frame/rollator with seat. I doubt I will be out and about much thanks to Covid, but I want to stay as independent as I can for as long as I can. On a similar subject, with my frame, I have found that the pushchair accessories made for the handles are great for my frame too. I am a Cath Kidston fan, and have a pushchair organiser which I keep my keys, phone, a drink, hand sanitiser and tissues in. I have the carrier bags in the same style. They Velcro securely to the handles on the frame, and on my particular frame, I can place them at the furthest point so I don’t end up catching them with my knees or feet. I have a set that matches my handbag and a set that are more flowery. For me they are brilliant.

Yes, water proof gloves are an absolute must. Also for me at most times, other than when it is really, really hot, sweatshirts are a must. I live in a mild climate for most of the year, so I like to get away with just a sweatshirt/hoodie for as long as possible. The pocket in the front is essential for many things. Also usually I don’t have much hair, so I need a hat that covers my ears, or my head will freeze to death lol. 🥶 I love the springy thing for your laptop. @@Wheelsnoheels yes I have it was great. I think coats are one of the hardest items of clothing - besides shoes - to wear in a wheelchair and look right. Another idea for a video is pet hacks while disabled/wheelchair. I’ve got three and have little tricks for different things/ each dog. Things that I’ve just naturally adapted and not thought about. ( I have issues with my grip, if I’m just holding one lead I have a way of looping the handle round my hand but I also have a belt to clip the lead to if walking 2 or more. part of my ADIT Maria’s gear is a long lead that connects to me too.)
