God I miss Ed China. Coolest and most down to earth ‘television personality’. It will be such a shame if no one gives him a break and gets him back doing what he does best. There is only so far he can go by himself. He is a high level automotive engineer, not a media mogul. We want Ed! We want Ed!

Yeah, Edd is the talented mechanic, and he has that rare personality that connected to the viewer as though you were in the workshop with him. He wasn't talking into the camera, he was talking WITH you.

6:36. Edd using his 'ead (sorry, had to be done!) to fix problems without spending the money. Even to the point of having to make his own tools to fix the problems. We loved watching Edd looking at the problem and then thinking about how to tackle the problem. Edd coming up with ingenious ways to tackle problems is what made the show brilliant.

Edd would have an inkling that it could have been a selector fork that broke before it was stripped down,as each fork controls 2 gears. I must have seen this one dozens of times and don't get fed up watching the repeats.

probably popped a pin on the 1st and 2nd gear selector shaft. (confirmed right) and yup super lucky that part didn't find its way into the actual gears. would have been game over for that transmission if it had.

I once had 2 gears missing in my old Seat toledo 1.6 year 2000. It was just a simple problem, that iron thing was not connected to the other iron thing (i don't know the parts name) so it was just simply put it back on and the gears where back.

So many 02m gearboxes had this issue. Stupid audi/vw etc having a weak part in such a critical place. Having done this repair myself, I found its actually not so difficult taking the gearbox apart. Just flip it over.

Removed my 2006 1.6 a3 gearbox got all casing bolts out but cant work out how to get the drive shaft parts off the box, they just spin despite 6mm alan keys on both sides

So common a failure. When trans is out need so few tools. 13mm sockers n extensions. Semi long 6mm allen. Some times a torx i cant remember size of. A heavier rubber hammer pr metal hammer and wood block

Such a cheap and easy fix, but most of us would fall foul to the greedy main dealers, saying you need several expensive gears. The fix only cost 50p, imagine the labour charge and sob story from a main dealer. A broken gearbox would have sent this nice car to the breakers yard, for most of us.

Not the jammiest deal I believe. They got a Boxster for £1000, changed the gearbox oil and sold it for 6 times the amount. The most inspiring episode for me anyway.

A cheap and easy fix. That was pure luck. As Edd said, it could've lunched the gearbox. I would've had a go myself. My "Plan B" would've been a guaranteed used replacement gearbox.
