Wheeler's 9 - Monstahs Made by Joey - The Unknown Side of Yu-Gi-Oh

Duel Monsters cards are the vessels of choice for duelists and sorcerers to channel monster spirits and magic effects in epic clashes of wills. They’re also trading cards that actual human people collect and trade in real life. In the original Yu-Gi-Oh series, Duel Monsters cards were created by megarich entrepreneur / amateur painter Maximillian Pegasus and his company Industrial Illusions. Us real-lifers get cards printed by Konami, but some cards are weird, and blur the narrative line between our world and the anime. Yup, this video is going to take a look at a select few normal monsters released from Konami written by plucky perpetual underdog, Joey Wheeler.

@@nyecrozier8663Its crazy Time wizard has gotten a retrain. I'd bet we see a retrain of Baby dragon and Thousand Dragon soon. Red-Eyes Thousand Dragon might go crazy. They might just need to go ahead and make Baby Dragon and Alligator sword an archetype together. Alligator sword Thousand Dragon fusion as the boss monster with a retrain of Thousand Dragon. Hell, combine them with Red-eyes and make it more red-eyes support for the inevitable duel monster remake anime. Red-eyes alligator sword, Red-Eyes Thousand Dragon, red-eyes axe raider. It's so much they could do to make some of those older DM cards relevant again. We already got red-eyes baby dragon, but they could just retrain normal baby dragon into red-eyes/thousand dragon support. Retrain time wizard into the actual archetype and make it so he gets a second effect that if his time magic effect succeed add a fusion card from the deck or make it so when summoned a baby dragon/red-eyes baby dragon is special summoned from the deck. It so much they could do with Joey's cards. They could make retrains of his early DM deck like make swamp/lava battle guard retrains that can special summon the other and when both on the field they get a 400 attack/defense boost. Add the retrains of flame swordsman(seems like the newest pack coming will be flame swordsman an archetype).

It's a little disappointing that only 1 of the Joey's 9 cards are ones he actually summoned (in real life, not a coma dream) Can't even say he just doesn't have 9 normal monsters to give this treatment to, as Joey plays tons of normal monsters. Battle Warrior got him the win against Bonz. At the least Baby Dragon should have been one.

About Hitotsu-Me Giant's name change, it's actually not censorship. Back in the early days konami changed some of the more western sounding names into japanese names to make the cards feel more unique. Cyclops exists in every form of fantasy but Hitotsu-Me Giant is yugioh only. Same with Meotoko, Sangan, Raigeki and many more.

Ya know what's strangely ironic about Wolf? It's basically a carbon copy of Silver Fang. Same Attack and Defense stats, same attribute, same type, same level, and it's a normal monster. Also, I always thought Alligator's Sword was a Beast-Warrior type monster, since it's an anthropomorphic Alligator, with armor and a sword.

The early game had a lot of instances where the translators figured, "Well, this word is in English in the Japanese version so we should make it Japanese in the English version" which is not a STRETCH as far as the logic goes. Some are censors (like Kumootoko is Spider Man in the Japanese but obviously there's a reason that couldn't be brought to the West), sometimes its a wordplay that they either didn't catch or didn't think would translate well (Gokibore is a pun on cockroach and ball and I don't think "Cockball" or something to that extent would fly) but in some cases it seems just that the staff didn't think that the original name sounded very good so they changed it to a Japanese word. What would stick in someone's head more: a monster called "Leviathan" or "Kairyu-Shin"? The translator figured, "Well, a sea dragon god is BASICALLY the same idea." Even if you like the sound of "Leviathan" you must admit that you can play with something called "Leviathan" in a million games but only one with "Kairyu-Shin." In my opinion, overall it did give Yugioh a bit more of a snappy language that sticks with you. There are probably some people who haven't played the game in decades who still remember Raigeki, but if it were translated 1:1 and just called "Thunder Bolt" would that have been as memorable? Maybe, but it's less likely.

It's also worth noting that Kuribabylon was called that during the the Duel Monsters era, and in any case being prominently mentioned in the Bible is only like 20-25% of what the city of Babylon is known for, so it's really unlikely that it was changed to avoid a "religious reference".

Lightning Bolt sounds generic as hell, but is one of Magic's most well-known cards. Most of the time 1. Those translations try too hard and 2. Don't matter, because cards those names are attached to have no memorable qualities. You can name 1500 atk pack filler vanilla however you like - it still would be forgotten because it's 1500 atk pack filler vanilla. Sure, there's an argument to be made that doing this at large enough quality gives yugioh a unique atmosphere, but it's atmosphere is build apon curiosity, player's desire to learn more about these cards with funny names and in that regard... there's nothing. No cool lore, no intertwined stories, not even cool flavour. It's just weird, sometimes grotesque, but usually bland and aimless pile of vanillas that try to intrigue you with an empty mystery box. To be fair, I'm not against using japanese words, they just should do it where it's appropriate. Like take BLS monsters for example. They're the epitome of Vanguard's "Dragon, Dragon" problem, except with "Soldier, Soldier". Or like you mentioned cards that are english in japanese.

I've always liked Kageningen as a card because in Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelists of the Roses it has a FLIP effect to make a copy of itself Plus another effect to reduce all damage involving battles with it to 0.

Interesting fact about Kageningen. While in English, he has a Japanese name, but the Japanese version has an English name. His name in Japan is literally Shadow fighter (just written in katakana which is how English and other foreign languages/words are written in Japanese).

Yeah, that's actually a really common thing for old Cards. For some reason, back in the day whenever a Card had an already-english name in Japan, they changed it to a japanese name in the West. From the top of my head, I know Hoshiningen and Gyakutennno Megami as other examples.

Ok, so between card descriptions and the way Yu-Gi-Oh was played back when these cards were out in the show and game, most of these lean towards the more physical side of things, having attack and defense focused effects, while also providing some support for any archetypes Joey’s cards are a part of. Duel logs forgot to mention you can fuse alligator sword with baby dragon to become alligator sword dragon(original huh) with 1700 atk 1500 def and effect that let's you attack if the opponent if only has face up are earth fire and wind, but also if opponent are all face down. Sucks, but niche

This video was such a bizarre experience. Like, it keeps itself completely straight while covering a very meaningless topic. It keeps derailing into specific explanations and going back to many specific points of the story in the anime. It thoroughly covers every aspect it could about every card mentioned, as if to simply extend the length of the video but it goes way above the required time for midrolls. It captivates the viewer with the sincerity, seriousness and passion put behind this deep dive while also staying shallow enough that it can be understood by even the most casual of fans. I admire the way this is presented and how off putting it is. Truly a work of art keep it up 👍

Alligator Sword Dragon is interesting because flavor-wise they were clearly trying to emulate the way the Flying keyword works in MtG, but with WIND attribute as a substitute for Flying. Unfortunately they seem to have forgotten to make it also able to bypass the two most powerful attributes in the game, LIGHT and DARK.

Babylon's name was likely changed to Meotoko for the same reason as Hitotsu-Me Giant, Ryu Ran, and Ryu-Kishin: The game is Japanese, and back in the day they wanted to remind you of that whenever possible for some reason.

Because that dream sequence is actually a tournament he took part in off-screen during the Japanese version of episode 2! You know that TV duel between Ryuzaki (Rex) and Haga (Weevil) to become the national champion? The tournament that Jonouchi took part in was a regional where the winner would get to compete in the national championship. AND, fun fact, while he obviously didn't win, he did make top cut! So yeah. In the Japanese version, this dream sequence tournament has a lot more significance since it's something that actually happened. But I know what you're thinking. If this tournament takes place off-screen in episode 2, how is "Shield and Sword" in his deck if he doesn't get it until episode 3 via trade? I dunno, continuity error, I guess? Oversight by the writers? Probably something along those lines. Hell, maybe he traded for a second copy and has been running two copies in his deck the whole time. Who knows?

I feel like so many classic fusion monsters would have been so much better if they combined the statlines from their materials, being as they were specific materials. Like Alligator's Sword Dragon, it would have had 2700ATK/1900DEF with an effect that wouldn't see it have much use today but back in the day it would have been one of the top extra deck monsters in the game.
